Describe the problem
No fan noise during intensive tasks.
What have you tried?
BIOS hardware scan
Current antivirus and security software
Eset Internet Security
On my new Dell Latitude 7450, I never hear fan noise even during Eset full system scan. I ever put my ear on the chassis and I did no hear a thing. I ran a hardware test in BIOS and the result came clean. Is this normal?

How they get cooled?
Fanless systems are cooled by moving heat from the CPU into the chassis and surrounding air without any active airflow.

How fanless cooling works
  • Heat spreader + thermal interface: Heat leaves the CPU through its integrated heat spreader and thermal paste/pad to a metal cold plate.
  • Heat pipes / vapor chamber (sometimes): Many fanless designs still use heat pipes to move heat away from the CPU to a larger area.
  • Large passive heatsink: A fin stack or thick metal plate provides lots of surface area.
  • Chassis as a heatsink: The magnesium/aluminum body is often part of the thermal design, spreading heat across the palm rest/bottom cover.
  • Natural convection: Warm air rises off the surfaces and cooler air replaces it (no fan needed).

The trade-offs
  • Lower sustained performance: Under long, heavy loads, fanless CPUs usually throttle sooner because there’s no forced airflow to keep temperatures down.
  • Warmer exterior: The laptop/tablet body can feel noticeably warm because it’s being used to dump heat.
  • Tighter power limits: Fanless designs typically use very low-power CPUs (often in the ~5–9W class, depending on the device) to stay within what passive cooling can handle.

Examples (typical, not exhaustive)
  • Many ARM-based devices (phones/tablets, some laptops) are fanless because they’re very power efficient.
  • Some Intel “Y-series”/very-low-power configurations in ultrathin designs have been fanless in certain models/years.

Conclusion: fanless cooling is basically “spread the heat out over a big metal area and let the air carry it away naturally,” which works well for light-to-moderate loads but limits sustained high performance.
