It is advised to take all reviews with a grain of salt. In extreme cases some reviews use dramatization for entertainment purposes.

So far I'm testing it in 5 different machines that had Avast previously installed. The machines are more responsive than with Avast, so they did something to the engine.

Since they purchased Avast, AVG and Avira I've been expecting some kind of technology merge, and it seems they are starting to implement it. Obviously they will keep the other brands alive as brand recognition is important. Just check how many people will use AVG and refuse to use Avast although they are basically the same software.

I would argue. Kaspersky is not the best for the game. Unfortunately it causes a lot of problems, especially with COD. This is unfortunately confirmed by many among my acquaintance. Windows Defender, on the other hand, is perfectly adequate for gaming and plenty of protection.
Windows Defender is one of the easiest "antiviruses" to skip. In a real attack, you will never be protected by defending. Although I must say that it has improved

In your opinion. Pretty much AV does not protect against real attacks.
Most products have become bloatware with unnecessary modules. We are getting to the point where protection is not the most important thing. It's how much system impact and bugs you will have when using it.

Third-party AVs exist for a reason. Even Microsoft itself uses third-party Avs, which was the one that caused the failure

Microsoft does partner with various security companies for research, development, and other collaborative efforts, but as far as using third-party Avs I highly doubt this. It's in MS's best interest to use its own in-house security given their extensive resources and tight Windows integration. For large scale enterprises they might integrate additional tools beyond defender.

Third-party exist for comprehensive security and or additional features needed/wanted or the need for customization.

@Shadowra Would you consider testing Avast and the new Norton against the same malware samples so we can see if they perform the same?
They will perform the same on a malware pack. Norton will beat Avast when it comes to malicious documents, as it deactivates their script features (rather weird implementation of CDR). Norton does not add anything else on top that can enhance the detection process.

I expect quite a similar performance if not the same detections on both products but maybe there's a surprise there somewhere. :alien:

What i want to know is why the new norton is so much more responsive than avast/avg from the VPN being so much faster to the system responsiveness and the applications/browsing is much faster!
I don't have numbers but it's not just you. I installed on 5 different computers ranging from old 7th gen intel computers to 13th gen ones and they re all more responsive navigating and in daily use and it's enough to be noticeable.

I can’t answer, because I haven’t yet tried the new Norton. It is possible that Gen may have made some performance optimisations. They may or may not become available in Avast and AVG.
These optimisations may include:
  • Reducing the main GUI code and GPU-optimising it.
  • Improving caching algorithms
  • Improving memory management and other resource-allocation mechanisms.
The new Norton utilises Avast’s engines instead of the Symantec STAR platform but it is not a 1:1 copy of Avast (at least not yet).

Edit: I also saw that PEP (Proactive Exploit Protection) which was essentially a NortonLifeLock patent, and not Symantec, has been kept. Norton may have better handling of exploits than Avast.

It is lightweight, but it is not complete yet:
  • Whenever I got new message in the Norton GUI inbox, and I click details, nothing happen it just disappear.
  • When you click "see details" about blocked items by browser's web protection, it gives the following:

Yeap. I noticed the disappearing messages as well. It's been a long time since I last had so much fun with security software :alien: . It's clearly beta and explains the slow distribution of the new version to current subscribers. I say we'll see at least one major update before it starts to be widely distributed.
