Hello!

We’ve rolled out a new Opera Stable release built on Chromium 152.0.7977.120.

The headline addition is support for the chrome.sidePanel API, which lets extensions render their own side panels.

On the fixes side, “Save as PDF” now captures pages correctly again, the bookmarks bar no longer disappears after exiting full screen, and macOS 26 users will find that traffic lights react to hover as they should. We also fixed several crashes across tab handling, split screen and the ChatGPT extension.

Hello!

Today we’re releasing an update to Opera Stable 136.0.6008.52.

The highlight is a new addition to Opera’s free, built-in VPN: it can now connect automatically when you join a public Wi-Fi network. Read more here.

This release is also built on Chromium 152.0.7977.130, which brings in the latest upstream security fixes, so we recommend updating as soon as it’s offered to you. On top of that, we’ve fixed two crashes reported after last week’s release, restored split screens created from tab islands after a browser restart, brought back the tab context menu when clicking below the tabs in vertical tabs on Windows, and made sure the browser picks up new paste protection rules.

Hello!

We’ve rolled out a new Opera Stable release with a Chromium bump (updated to 152.0.7977.134) and a batch of fixes focused on tab dragging, pinned tabs, and general stability.

Most of the work in this release went into the vertical tabs experience, particularly around pinned tabs. You can now unpin tabs by dragging them out of the pinned section, and drag unpinned tabs into it. The drag pointer preview has been improved so it’s clearer where a tab will land when moving between sections, and the pinned tab preview layout while dragging has been polished. We also fixed a case where dragging a pinned tab into the regular tabs section only let you drop it into a tab island, and a crash that could happen when dragging an unpinned tab from the pinned section back to the unpinned part. On top of that, clicking on tabs after switching the layout from vertical to horizontal now works correctly.

On the smaller fixes side, the VPN badge is once again displayed in the address bar and onboarding on Mac no longer feels slow and unresponsive after the intro.

For Early Bird users on vertical tabs, we also fixed the missing tabs context menu when clicking below the tabs on Windows, and a case where the tab favicon showed both the red dot and the sound/mute indicator in collapsed state during a meeting.

We also enabled #emergency-session-restore in Early Bird. This makes session recovery more resilient: if the normal session restore is interrupted or fails, Opera now falls back through several safer recovery paths instead of starting with an empty session, so you’re much less likely to lose your tabs after a crash. Give it a try!

Known issue:

  • Opera crashes on Linux when a dynamic theme is selected in the theme settings. Please use a static theme instead until the fix is available.

Hello!

We’ve rolled out a new Opera Stable 137 release with a Chromium bump and several stability fixes.

On top of that, we’ve enabled #opera-one-react-settings by default: refreshed Settings experience, rebuilt in React and lightly redesigned along the way.

Core

  • Updated Chromium to 153.0.8010.55
  • Fixed VP9 and AV1 decoding in the Snap build
  • Fixed websites not reacting to touch input on touch screens
  • Fixed several crashes on Linux, Windows and macOS
  • Fixed Opera being brought to front on Mac when VPN auto-connects after switching to public Wi-Fi

Tabs

  • Fixed new tab button position after creating and closing a 4-pane split screen
  • Fixed being unable to click the left side of the page next to the blank area of the tabs panel
  • Fixed Search in Tabs button in Vertical Tabs when the sidebar is hidden or in auto-hide mode
  • Enabled #vertical-tabs-drag-to-pin on all streams

Early Bird features:

  • One of your most-asked-for features is here: we’ve turned #vertical-tabs-collapse-per-window on Early Bird. Each window now remembers its own vertical-tabs collapsed/expanded state, and new windows pick it up from the last one you opened.
  • We also enabled #emergency-session-restore on Early Bird. This makes session recovery more resilient: if the normal session restore is interrupted or fails, Opera now falls back through several safer recovery paths instead of starting with an empty session, so you’re much less likely to lose your tabs after a crash. Give it a try!

Hello!

We’ve rolled out a new Opera Stable release, version 137.0.6036.63, focused on stability and site compatibility.

The big news: Emergency Session Restore is now enabled on all streams, so if Opera shuts down unexpectedly, your tabs come back when you reopen the browser.

On the site compatibility side, we fixed WebCodecs H.264 encoder errors on WhatsApp Web and Paramount+ playback failing with Error 100. Sync is also working again for users who were missing the account options in Settings.

The rest of the release is a round of crash fixes across the search infobar, Translate UI, Autofill popup, and extension side panels – mostly on Windows.
