Hello everybody!
I've been working lately on a security browser extension with a different focus. It's not another anti-malware scanner, or URL checker, neither is it an ad-blocker or similar.
What this extension does is pretty simple: it will try to cover up for the lack of cybersecurity knowledge of your grandma, your novice or naive friend, and pretty much all average Joe's. It doesn't use a whitelist or a blacklist, it doesn't scan for malware, and it doesn't have a malicious database to compare hashes or URLS. It checks for context.
Let me give you an example:
This is the Phishing Shield. It checks locally who the sender claims to be, retrieves context from the sender's name and subject + body text; and compares it with the sender's domain. This is one of the techniques it uses to determine a legitimacy score and display a phishing alert to the user (big and red enough to scare your mom and delete the email immediately).
I'm working on more shields, here's what I've got so far:
This is what your father will see if some shady site redirects him to a fake tech support scam website:
Once again, this isn't intended as an anti-malware extension, or an antivirus replacement. It provides an additional layer of protection in the browser, where many online attacks begin, helping users recognize phishing, scams, and deceptive content before taking a harmful action.
Since antivirus/security extensions work mainly with a blacklist they check the URL against, they can and will fail sometimes if the domain is rather new, leaving novice users exposed to phishing or fake support scams.
This isn't ready yet, and if you guys consider it to be worth it I will release a beta for you to test. Feel free to send your comments and suggestions
