Proton Pass now supports passkeys on all devices and plans

We’re excited to announce that Proton Pass supports passkeys for everyone, allowing you to manage and use passkeys across all devices seamlessly. Passkeys are an easy and secure alternative to traditional passwords that can help prevent phishing attacks and make your online experience smoother and safer.

Unfortunately, Big Tech’s rollout of this technology prioritized using passkeys to lock people into their walled gardens over providing universal security for everyone. And many password managers only support passkeys on specific platforms or provide them with paid plans, meaning you only get to reap passkeys’ security benefits if you can afford them.

We’ve reimagined passkeys, helping them reach their full potential as free, universal, and open-source tech. We believe online privacy and security should be accessible to everyone, regardless of what device you use or your ability to pay. That’s why passkey support is now available to the entire Proton Pass community.

Proton Pass introduces enhanced identity protection with Pass Monitor

Data breaches are increasingly common. Whenever you sign up for an online service, you provide it with personal information that’s valuable to hackers, such as email addresses, passwords, phone numbers, and more. Unfortunately, many online services fail to adequately secure this information. The number of breaches spiked by 78%, from 1,802 in 2022 to 3,205 in 2023(new window), affecting more than 353 million people.

To keep you safe, we’re introducing Pass Monitor for our password manager, a new suite of security features to help you secure your data. Pass Monitor alerts you of account weaknesses and data breaches so you can better defend your online accounts against attacks. We believe security should be easy, so Pass Monitor watches out for you automatically and guides you through solutions in the event your data leaks from a third-party service.

Pass Monitor includes four layers of security:
  • Dark Web Monitoring: We scan illicit data marketplaces on the dark web to check if your Proton addresses, email aliases, and up to 10 custom email addresses have been leaked. If we find anything, we alert you immediately so you can take quick action to secure your accounts.
  • Password Health: This is like a checkup for your account security. We’ll let you know if you have any weak or reused passwords that need to be updated.
  • Inactive two-factor authentication: 2FA is a second layer of security in addition to a password that greatly reduces the risk of hackers breaking into your accounts. Pass will identify accounts where you can enable 2FA.
  • Proton Sentinel: Released last year, our Proton Sentinel program uses AI and human analysts to detect and block account takeover attacks. We’re rolling this feature into Pass Monitor.
Password Health and 2FA checks are included in Proton Pass Free plans. You can get Dark Web Monitoring, Proton Sentinel, and other advanced security features with our Pass Plus plan. Pass Monitor will be available to everyone on all devices over the next few days.

Proton Pass brings secure and private password management to all devices

Today, we’re excited to announce the launch of the Proton Pass macOS app and the Proton Pass Linux app. One of the most popular requests from the Proton community was a standalone desktop app, which is now available on every major platform — Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and iPadOS, and Chrome OS (via our Android app).

As a companion to the Proton Pass macOS app, we’re also pleased to announce the standalone native Safari browser extension. This extension offers enhanced convenience and security for everyone that uses macOS’s default browser. Unlike Safari’s default password manager, Proton Pass allows you to sync your logins across multiple different browsers and devices, ensuring consistent access across all platforms.

The Linux version of Proton Pass supports all Debian and RedHat-based distributions, including Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, and CentOS. All Proton Pass apps and browser extensions are available to everyone, and you can use our apps in offline mode with a paid plan.

Our mission has always been to make it easy for everyone to take control of their online privacy. Right now it’s easier than ever to switch to Proton Pass.

For a limited time, we’re offering to cover the remaining months on your contract with your current password manager if you switch to Proton Pass.

Proton Pass Plus now includes SimpleLogin premium features
November 7, 2024
We’re updating our Proton Pass Plus subscription to include new alias features, including: custom domains for aliases, additional mailboxes, the ability to send emails from aliases, and more. These features are available in SimpleLogin, an open source email alias solution owned by Proton and which provides the email aliases function in Proton Pass.

While Proton Pass Plus already offers unlimited email aliases, the functionality is limited to creating aliases when signing up for new accounts and replying to emails sent to that alias.

Advanced functionality, such as using your email alias to send an email to someone who hasn’t contacted you before, hadn’t been possible: for example, you couldn’t request help from a customer service team using an alias, preventing you from hiding your personal email address. To be able to use such an advanced alias feature, you had to have a SimpleLogin Premium subscription.

Proton Pass product roadmap: Updates coming this winter/spring
November 14, 2024

What’s on our product roadmap this winter/spring

In the coming months, we’ll be working on some of your most highly requested features, with the aim to make Pass even more useful for productivity and collaboration. This includes improved support for our business users, where time is money, and where we understand the importance of improved efficiency and security within a business.

Attach files to your Pass items

To help you centralize and protect all of your personal information in Proton Pass, you’ll soon be able to attach files such as documents or pictures to any item. For instance, you’ll be able to save recent bank statements to your online banking login, or attach your tax returns to your government portal login.

Permanently share single items

With Proton Pass, you can already share vaults and use secure link sharing to share logins and other items. To improve collaboration further, we’re also going to introduce single item sharing, a quick and permanent way to share a single item to someone else via Proton Pass. If you don’t need to share an entire vault, and you don’t want the information you’re sharing to expire, then single item sharing is the perfect option. Items shared this way will also be autofilled, so you won’t need to copy and paste information that’s been shared with you.

When you share a single item, the recipient won’t lose access because there’s no expiration date. You can grant write or read-only permissions. It’s just a faster, easier way to share a single login or piece of information.

Automatically clear the clipboard on all platforms

On mobile, copied text from Proton Pass (such as a username, password, or alias) is automatically deleted after a set period of time (two minutes by default). We’ve heard from you that you want this functionality available on other platforms, so we’re bringing it to our extensions, web apps, and desktop apps, too.

Autofill your credit card details with a single click or tap

Autofill is one of the Proton Pass features that saves you time and therefore improves your productivity. To help you use the internet more easily, Proton Pass will now support login, 2FA, identity and credit card autofills. In just a couple of clicks, you’ll be able to fill out complex forms using information you’ve stored in your Proton Pass account.

Drag and drop between vaults

This is one of the most highly requested features from our community. When you’re storing a lot of information in various vaults, keeping organized becomes complicated. We’re going to introduce drag-and-drop between vaults, so you can simply move and place items in one click or tap. Drag-and-drop will be available on web and desktop apps.

Give family or friends emergency access to your vaults

In the event that you’re not able to access Proton Pass or someone else needs to access your account, you’ll be able to grant emergency access to a specific, designated user. This can be helpful in an emergency situation where a loved one or friend needs access to the information you’ve stored in your Proton Pass account.

Auto-fill in desktop apps

Not all desktop apps allow native autofill, which can be frustrating when you need to fill out a form or log in to an account outside of your browser. Instead of first going to Proton Pass to copy your information and back to the app to paste it over and over, we’ll be releasing auto-type for Proton Pass. This will allow Proton Pass to autofill in desktop apps that don’t support native autofill.

Create custom item types for any of your valuable data

With this new feature, you’ll be able to customize items so they store your valuable data in a way that works for you and is suitable for the type of data that you wish to store. For example, you’ll be able to create items for software licenses, reward programs, Social Security Numbers, or whatever else will be useful to you.

Use biometrics to unlock our web app and browser extension

The Proton Pass mobile app saves you time by letting you unlock your account with a fingerprint in addition to using your PIN or password. In August 2024, we rolled out biometric login for our desktop apps (Mac/Windows) for Proton Pass Plus users. In 2025, we’ll release it for browser extensions and web apps, too, making biometric unlock available across all platforms.

Make life easier for team members with SSO support

Since we launched Proton Pass for Business, we’ve received much interest from organizations of all sizes. Specifically, we’ve had many requests for single sign-on (SSO) to streamline the authentication experience by allowing you to use a single password to log in to all of your accounts.

You’ll be able to log in to multiple applications and services with SSO, making it an excellent option for businesses aiming to reduce password-based friction within their teams. SSO will soon be available for all Proton Pass Professional and Business Suite users. SSO works with almost all identity providers (IDPs), and we’ll release easy-to-follow guides for using SSO with each IDP.

Looking ahead to next year

Proton Pass just had an update that now includes the option to change the theme colors.
On a couple of my devices the default dark mode with the extensions was too dark, making it a bit harder to see and use. Now Edge, and Chrome and the desktop app have that option. As far as I could tell, FF still wasn't updating to the new v1.25.0 and is sill on v1.24.4

I passed over it even though I loved NordPass.

NordPass charges for things that are completely useless (like PC/mobile sync... ), which I get for free with Proton!
And having 2 passwords, I find it much more secure.
