Having used Proton VPN since December 19 I have not had any reason to remove it or use any other VPN & I've used most of them - To have a VPN on for a month & a half is truly a record for me (no exaggeration) - it's consistently fast usually just a few meg off no VPN speed & is trouble free - Love it

But you can not prove that is the case. The only way you can prove that is through analyzing court records.

And then back to my point, how do you know the Vpn server/Vpn provider is not compromised?

You would have to assume they have some way of intercepting encrypted Vpn traffic, whether that's by owning servers or compromising Vpn providers infrastructure.

Otherwise Vpn's would be in the news all day like E2EE with authorities arguing they need access and that they are going dark and that they want back doors.

Or it could be that they don't care about Vpn traffic, basically torrents and fraud? Not exactly national security material. Or maybe there is just so much Vpn traffic that they have given up?

Yes, a vpn operator has to comply with local laws. If the gov asks for records, they would have to hand over them. But if they have thrown away the decryption keys, then there is nothing much a gov can do. The vpn operator would not be foolish enough to use home baked encryption but would have relied on known cryptography which has been peer reviewed by academics to be unbreakable. I would tend to trust academics, until they are bribed or blackmailed.

Correct. That's why a good VPN will be independently audited to verify that it in fact keeps no logs
Yes but the men in black know this, which is why they attack the endpoint or hardware. Why bother breaking encryption when you can easily just infect the target? This is why they never mention Vpn's when they complain about 'going dark', they have no trouble pwning the endpoint and never have, whether it's a phone, PC, or router/firewall, it's faster & easier than messing about with breaking encryption algorithms..

I'm wondering if it's just me, but the last couple of times at the coffee shop when connecting with the Proton free version, it connects to a Netherland server, which takes it some time to do from the central US. So I disconnect, and it reconnects to the Netherlands again. Now the third time it connects to Romania, 4th time Japan. Since there are no options to choose a server, but Quick Connect/Fastest Server I really don't have any options.

Proton used to connect to a US server at the first attempt when I started it, or at least by the 2nd Change server. Is this something they're intentionally doing (allowing) from their end, to hopefully get me so exasperated that I'll buy the paid version, or again, is it just me?

Edit: I resolved it by using a free 1 year license of BD VPN Premium I was given. It may not be Proton or Mullvad, but at least the speeds aren't to bad, there are some nice options and I can easily change the server locations as desired.

I received an answer from outside the forum (old forum user called Illumination):

"With the free version of proton when it rotates randomly like that, to restart the device and it should set him back to the US server. "

Thank you harlan4096 (and Illumination). I had not tried that or even considered a restart may help. (y) 😊

"That should work on windows as well as it does the android app for your information. Proton will choose the closest stable server for your region and if you go into the app and start trying to change to closer servers you will end up in another country after a couple attempts. On Android if you restart the device it starts back at the closets server again."

I hope this is not, um, un-allowed, but this was just too good of a deal to not share. My Mullvad subscription was expiring soon, so I was on the hunt for another VPN that was both reputable and cheaper. (Mullvad is great but $6/month is on the expensive side since they don't offer length of contract deals. Even the discounted price here was $160 for three years.) I trialed ProtonVPN and I really liked it, but it too was expensive. But I found this link for ProtonVPN for two years for $71. That's the best deal I could find. The link if not mine, and I am in no way affiliated with them. I just thought if could be helpful.

FYI, there's a rather significant update to the ProtonVPN app now; version 4.1.10. It changes the UI pretty drastically. I like it.

I just opened proton vpn & it says 3.5.3 is up to date. Not been obvious to me in past, can I just open it and expect it to see update or do I need to connect vpn for it to see update??
