Revelation of the Road: The Shroud's Journey: http://www.womenofgrace.com/en-us/media/tv/details.aspx?id=377
Episode details: 'One of the most fascinating and most investigated relics is the Shroud of Turin. And, as technology continues to make advances, so do the scientists who use all it has to offer to unlock its secrets. In this Women of Grace series, Dr. J. Wayne Phillips will be our guest as he explores with us what many believe is the burial cloth of Jesus.'

The Shroud of Turin Research Project, Pt 1: http://www.womenofgrace.com/en-us/media/tv/details.aspx?id=378
Episode details: 'In May, 2010, Pope Benedict the XVII made pilgrimage to Turin, Italy for the first exposition of the Shroud of Turin in a decade. Following his veneration of the Shroud, the Holy Father said that the Shroud is the icon of the mystery of Holy Saturday, and that it at once presents us with God's own radical solidarity with us through Jesus Christ. The power of the Shroud, he said, is that in the "heart of death there now beats life, inasmuch as love lives there." And for those who study the Shroud, seeking to unlock the secrets it holds, the realm of scientific investigation crosses over into the mystery of faith.'

Carbon Dating and Image Form.: Science and the Shroud, P. 2: http://www.womenofgrace.com/en-us/media/tv/details.aspx?id=379
Episode details: 'Occasionally in the pursuit of scientific investigation, contradictory findings can seem to render hundreds of hours and years of research invalid. Such was the case with the Shroud of Turin when, in 1988, further study on this fascinating relic nearly came to a complete stop. It is yet another amazing story that eventually helped to uncover even more of the Shroud's secrets. Join us today as guest, Dr. J. Wayne Phillips takes us into this moment of its thrilling history.'

New Discoveries, New Theories: Science and the Shroud, P. 3: http://www.womenofgrace.com/en-us/media/tv/details.aspx?id=380
Episode details: 'Science and reason are not antithetical to belief and faith. In fact, they often are the means by which faith grows and develops. And such is the case with the study and scientific research that undergirds investigation of the Shroud of Turin. As technology burgeons so, too, does its usefulness in helping to uncover the secrets this marvelous relic holds. Here to talk with us today about the new discoveries science has now made possible and what they reveal about the Shroud is Dr. J. Wayne Phillips.'

Dynamic Duo: The Sudarium and the Shroud: http://www.womenofgrace.com/en-us/media/tv/details.aspx?id=381
Episode details: 'Conduct just about any kind of an investigation and nothing is more welcome than what is often called, "corroborating evidence." What might be the best corroborating evidence to prove the Shroud's authenticity? Another relic that is congruent with what the Shroud's data reveals. And, my friends, that is exactly what we have in the cloth or napkin that covered the face of Jesus, that very piece of fabric mentioned in John 20 verse 7. Here to tell us about the Sudarium and what it tells us about the Shroud is our guest, Dr. J. Wayne Phillips.'

According to Holy Tradition, Christ entered the synagogue on September 1 to announce His mission to mankind (Luke 4:16-22). Quoting Isaiah 61:1-2), the Savior proclaimed, "The spirit of the Lord is upon me; because He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent me to proclaim release to captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord…" - on ocafs.oca.org : http://ocafs.oca.org/FeastSaintsViewer.asp?SID=4&ID=1&FSID=501

The following may be a little out of sync with the current flow of this thread, but it must be shared, I feel:

Ultimately a discussion on this current topic leads to pondering about religion vs. Truth. About our Creator and Savior. Religious tyrant vs. humble servant. Religion is necessary in our chaotic, fallen world, but it is a vessel, not the Truth itself; the Truth of the Gospel. So do we want religion, or do we want the Truth to set us free?
The movie "Book of Eli" presents it where any novice can grasp that concept. You should watch it if you have not.
Many people are sour at the Godhead because of centuries of feudalist systems (religio-political oligarchies) and millenia of dictators and Caesers tainting religion with power grabs and capital punishment schemes; not that I am opposed to capital punishment, but I am against using The Bible as a oppressive government handbook, so to speak. That is why I am a big admirer of Jefferson---because he knew the importance of separation of church and state; of religious freedoms as to avoid religious tyranny and preserve the opportunity for an individual to find and accept the Godhead. When religion is forced, it is an ugly thing. When it is used as a vessel to get the Truth out to the masses, it can be glorious as the Father of Lights would have it. Jesus Christ granted us FREEWILL to have a choice to accept him or not--to know our hearts and minds--not for governments to hand down punishment, or give perks to "vassals". Thomas Jefferson understood this crucial aspect of human existence in all its errors pertaining to religion and oppressive governments of the past (AND THERE WERE MANY).

ALSO: rituals and symbolism vs. substance (WHOLE TRUTH). Not that rituals and symbolism are "bad", but that if they are allowed to obstruct the sharing of the Truth of the Gospel, it is all for not.

THE GIST: a little bit of religion, symbolism and ritual mixed with a lot of Truth of Jesus Christ is good. In this world, the church will always have some traces of paganism in symbols and rituals, and there will always be some religion and politics when a church is organized and functioning, but it does not mean that all churches are corrupt. Some still have sound doctrines and don't let symbolism, religion, politics and superstition stand in the way of God's gift of Eternity through Salvation. It has to be an eclectic collection of worship with the TRUTH standing firm and held up over all else.

Keep in mind that MAN has tainted itself (ourselves) with excess religion, politics and pagan symbolism of old that still hangs around in the churches. MAN is responsible for all the religious tyrants and feudalist oligarchies of the past (and many there have been). The same humans wants to blame God for all of mankind's short comings in that way. It was never God's idea to burn scientists and researchers at the stake while their books smolder right next to their scorched bodies. That was MAN. FALLEN MAN. FALLEN WORLD. FALLEN ANGLES. Satan in the garden is very similar to religion, superstition, and politics being allowed obstruct the TRUTH of the 3 in 1; THE GODHEAD. It is important that we do not get our Creator and Savior confused with darkness, chaos and the sinful nature of this dimension; 21st century earth, or any century man has been running things ultimately. It goes back as far as the Tower of Babel. It consumes all synagogues, churches and mosques, some much more than others. It is the "spirit of Babylon" or the "spirit of confusion" that Satan loves because it blinds us to the Truth. Satan is the god of this world and he wants us blinded with lies as well as a little truth to make it subtle enough to be manifest. Every bad thing that happens in this world is a result of man's sin, fallen angels and Satan-------NOT THE GODHEAD. We have, and we have had a choice. Jefferson might have called it "the pursuit of happiness". Freewill can be used as a form of "pursuit of happiness". Jesus Christ would have it no other way. So you have to ask yourself, "What is happiness in the form of Truth?" The Truth, the Light, will set you free. Knowledge alone cannot save you like the Gnostics believed. It is a combination of the Holy Spirit and relative facts that show you an eternal path if you are willing to be meek and take it, thus inheriting the Earth. You have to seek it out and break the chains of man and his failed systems that are not eternally enduring--man's fallen kingdoms, one right after the other. It is Intelligent Design vs. destruction in all its formless chaotic darkness.

Religion and symbolism and fellowship should be to help advance the Truth of our Creator and Savior, not to hide it or distort it.

"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."

Ephesians 6:12

That pretty much sums up what I am trying to say. The Godhead is the solution, not the problem.

So we now see why Benjamin Franklin said what he said: "Rebellion against tyrants is obedience to God"
And why Thomas Jefferson includes that on his seal. They both knew that every tyrant used some quasi religious foundation to persecute people and steal freewill (freedom). It has happened all throughout history and the atheist power monger is the first to use that history to scoff at God because of what feudal and dictatorial tyrants did. But the humble servant uses it to expose man's sin, fallen angels and Satan as to pave the way for an individual to utilize his freewill (freedom) to seek the TRUTH.

"Sometimes it is said that man cannot be trusted with the government of himself. Can he then be trusted with the government of others? Or have we found angels in the form of kings to govern him? Let history answer this question."

Thomas Jefferson

So ZOU:
I write to you, not because you lack knowledge of the truth, but because you already know it, and lies have nothing in common with the truth. (1 John 2,21);)

Then the production of anti-Christian Hollywood does not interest me at all, sorry. Lately I do not look over products of cinema .. or TV .. I prefer actively live the real life. We do not know how long God gives us the right to live, so I let the stories to children. I consider that I've seen enough movies in my life ..

'I have no colour images of the mosaics from this church… in fact, no one has such. Why? This church was destroyed by the Turks in 1922 during the brutal expulsion of the Greek Christian population from Asia Minor. Patriarch Bartholomew came to Russia recently because Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the Islamocist prime minister of Turkey, is turning the screws ever tighter on the remaining Christians. America doesn’t support the Phanar unreservedly (although they use it against the MP), but they DO back the Turks without stint.
God willing, there’ll be no repeat of 1922… Smyrna hasn’t been forgotten.' - signed: BMD

4. From John to the seven Churches of Asia: receive grace and peace from him who is, who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits of God which are before his throne, 5. and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has washed away our sins with his own blood, 6. making us a kingdom and priests for God his Father, to him be the glory and power for ever and ever. Amen. 7. See he comes with the clouds and everyone will see him, even those who pierced him; on his account all the nations of the earth will beat his breast. Yes. It will be so. 8. "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, he who is, who was and who is to come: the Master of the universe. 9. I, John, your brother, who share with you, in Jesus, the sufferings, the kingdom and the patient endurance, was on the island of Patmos, because of the Word of God and witnessing to Jesus. 10. On the Lord's day, the Spirit took possession of me and I heard a voice behind me which sounded like a trumpet, 11. "Write down all that you see, in a book, and send it to the seven Churches of Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea." 12. I turned to see who was speaking to me; behind me were seven golden lampstands 13. and, in the middle of these, I saw someone like a son of man, dressed in a long robe tied with a golden girdle. 14. His head and his hair are white as wool or as snow and his eyes are like flames of fire. 15. His feet are like burnished bronze when it has been refined in a furnace. His voice is like the roaring of the waves. 16. I saw seven stars in his right hand and a sharp, double-edged sword coming out of his mouth; his face shone like the sun in all its brilliance. 17. Seeing him, I fell at his feet like one dead but he touched me with his right hand and said, "Do not be afraid. It is I, the First and the Last. 18. I am the living one; I was dead and now I am alive for ever and ever; and mine are the keys of death and the netherworld. 19. Now write what you have seen, both what is and what is yet to come. 20. Know the secret of the seven stars you saw in my right hand and the seven golden lampstands: the seven stars are the angels of the seven Churches and the seven lampstands are the seven Churches. - Revelation 1, 4:20

You wrote 'religion vs. Truth' .. but my (Christian) religion IS the Truth, so I put them on the same side (in my case) .

I understand. I am not saying that religion is a bad thing. I am simply saying that we should never let religion or politics obstruct our quest for eternal life. The truth will set us free. The Godhead is Truth.

Our battle is not against human forces but against the rulers and authorities and their dark powers that govern this world. We are struggling against the spirits and supernatural forces of evil. (Ephesians 6,12)Cool

Nice one. That is a realist state of mind. I like it.

The Crucifixion, Death, Burial and RESURRECTION of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ

.......................................................
VUrpA.jpg

14th-century fresco of Jesus Christ bearing the cross, Visoki Dečani Serbian Monastery VUrpA.jpg 303x425
The images are my personal choice, the narrative - is from the Good Read: THE CRUCIFIXION: http://holyface.all-catholic.net/crucifix.html
The Shroud tells us a lot about the last three hours of the life of Jesus. On the cross, to Himself He must have repeated the words of the Last Supper: "I have longed to eat this passover with you before I suffer; because, I tell you, I shall not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God. " (Luke 22:16) It was on the cross that the Kingdom would be reestablished. The words that He uttered during those three hours are the confirmation that His mission was accomplished and the kingdom had been reestablished and the door of Paradise had been reopened.

Rastignirea (Siria) - Crucifixion, Syria - Enh. Subtle Sanna lE9Qp.jpg 500x687 source: http://teofilacticoane.blogspot.fr/2010/04/icoane-bizantine.html
For the two thieves it was an execution. For our Lord, strictly speaking, it was not an execution, it was a sacrifice. The attitude of Jesus is different. Our Lord was intelligent, he knew his mission in advance.
He, in His generosity, offered himself, freely and willing, to be sacrificed, in expiation of the evil of mankind, for sinners, for unbelievers. For our Lord it was not an execution. It was a free, willing sacrifice. Our Lord knew in advance. We know from the gospel that our Lord was in Galilee. At a certain point, the gospel tells us, our Lord, firmly, made up his mind. We have to go to Jerusalem. They took a short cut. He was supposed to stay away from the Samaritan territory. The Samaritans were not so good. And yet our Lord went through the Samaritan territory, in other words He took a short cut.
When he came close to Jerusalem, the apostles knew they were heading for trouble. So they said: Lord, why do you want to go to Jerusalem? They will crucify you. They threatened you already. Our Lord insisted, No, I have to go to Jerusalem. The apostles said: Lord, then we will not follow you. It seems from the gospel that our lord began walking alone. At a certain point St. Thomas said: "Let us go, we will die with him." Jesus knew he was heading for trouble in Jerusalem and yet He freely, willingly, went to Jerusalem to be crucified. Jesus freely offered himself to die for our redemption. We see it on His countenance. On the face of our Lord we see his patience. Jesus was able to be patient. to suffer in silence. No sign of hatred, of anger for the soldiers, for the high priests, for the Roman procurator or for the people. He looks surprisingly resigned to suffer, even to die. There is a beautiful explanation. Our Lord died on the cross in obedience to the Father and out of love for us. Love gave Him the strength to be patient, gentle, He was even praying, Father forgive them. They don't know what they are doing. For a moment our Lord on the cross seems to be happy. It is when the good thief said, "Lord when you will be in your kingdom, remember me." Our Lord made an effort, He lifted himself up on the nail the feet to be able to breathe, and said. "This very day you will be with me in paradise." Our Lord promised more than the thief was asking for.
On the face we can see resignation, patience and gentleness because he was dying out of love. We have a good example from parents, mothers and fathers. Parents are able to make any sacrifice for the children. they do it out of love, they even smile while suffering, because they suffer out of love. Our Lord was dying out of love, so was able to remain patient, gentle, prayerful to the very end.

The imprint of the body of Jesus on the Shroud reveals, as medical doctors and scientists confirm, that Jesus died by asphyxia, or better by tetany and asphyxia, the death of a crucified man.
Carefully looking at the Shroud one can see that the great pectoral muscles have been forcibly contracted - they are enlarged, and drawn up toward the collarbone and the arms. The whole chest is also drawn up, and greatly distended, with a maximum intoning of air. The upper portion of the abdomen is sunk and pressed inward, while the lower abdomen is protruding.
In the forearms the blood flowing from the wound of the wrist is very visible and coagulates in two different directions: one, as the body was in a sagging position, with the body pulling on the arms; the other, as the victim had forcibly pushed Himself up to relax and stretch the arms in order to exhale the air from the lungs. This theory is supported by the normal method of insuring rapid death of crucified victims - the breaking of the legs. (The victim now would have no support from his feet, nor be able to push himself up in order to exhale the air from the lungs.) The only plausible reason that such a procedure was not used in the case of Jesus was that he died so rapidly. In his case, therefore, the spear thrust in the side was deemed sufficient to legally verify death so that the body could be delivered to Joseph of Arimathaea.

The Shroud shows the wound of the heart. Scientists in analyzing the blood stain around the wound have asserted that: "the flowing of blood and water from the side, are well documented: the first is evident in a complex of stains of deep red blood, surrounded like a halo with the final shedding of the serous liquid: the blood and water according to St. John." (Way of the Cross in the light of the Holy Shroud: p. 59 Msgr. Giulio Ricci, Centro Romano di Sindonologia)
It has been proven that the statement of St. John "water and blood" corresponds to the medical condition of the victim who had died on the cross. The wound corresponds also to what would be expected from a soldier who knew how to make sure that a victim on the cross would for certain be dead by the time he would have been taken down from the cross.

The gospel has a little note about Mary, the Mother, that sounds quite unusual, contrary to the law. Mary was standing at the foot of the cross not hysterical, not fainting, not screaming. The gospel tells us that she was "standing and weeping." How is it possible for a mother to see the son under torture without becoming hysterical? This is my personal explanation. Mary knew that her son was dying freely, willingly, for the redemption of mankind. She knew it so she went close to the soldier asking permission to get closer to her Son. I am sure the soldier said "no" because of the law. Mary without insisting moved back. When the officer saw the respect of Mary for the soldier, he told him to make an exception, to let the Mother come close to the cross.
Our Lord and the Blessed Mother spent hours together, in the evening during the winter around the fireplace praying and reciting the psalms and talking about the bible. Our Lord may have said, Mother, every year we go to the temple of Jerusalem to offer a lamb in atonement for the evil of our people. Suppose mother I offer myself to the Father, thus replacing the lamb. After all, almighty God is not going to drink the blood of the lamb. What he wants from us most of all is obedience, a willing heart. So mother, suppose, out of generosity, I offer myself to replace the lamb to be offered in sacrifice, in the temple of Jerusalem. Do you mother, have any objection?
I would presume the Blessed Mother would say: Son, no, I have no objection.
On another occasion Jesus may have said: Mother, the prophet made a description of the future redeemer. Such a description as to help the people identify the redeemer upon his arrival. He said suffering and humiliations will be the sign of identification. So Mother, if I have to suffer for the redemption of mankind, will you have any objections?
Son, No, I will be glad if you do. Never say no to God. ..

.. On another evening, sitting together, our Lord may have told the mother, that the prophet Isaiah talks about the future redeemer as a man of suffering. He talks in such a way as to indicate the flogging. It was extremely painful . Suppose that is what I have to suffer, the flogging ending in the crucifixion. Mother, suppose that is what they will do to me. Do you have any objection? And the mother would say, no, my son. Never say no to God.
Then our Lord said: Mother when I have to go through such a suffering, such an ordeal will you be there to encourage me with your presence? We may presume that Mary answered: Yes, my son. I will be there. ..

In other words, our Lord was informing the Blessed Mother about his future suffering and invited her to suffer with him. That is why our Blessed Mother is considered the "co-redemptrix." She knew and she freely, willingly, accepted to suffered with her son for the redemption of mankind.
This is why the Blessed Mother was able to stand at the foot of the cross, "standing and weeping," without becoming hysterical.

.. The Gospel gives us the following description of the burial of Jesus: "When it was evening, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, called Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Pilate thereupon ordered it to be handed over. So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a CLEAN SHROUD and put it in his own new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock. " (Matthew, 27:57-59)
As soon as our Lord had died, all the concern of His disciples was to take care of the burial. It should have been the concern of His mother, Mary, but she was a pilgrim at Jerusalem and, most likely, had no means to bury her Son. Joseph of Arimathaea and Nicodemus, both members of the Sanhedrin, offered themselves to help. Joseph obtained official permission for the burial, purchased a NEW (CLEAN) SHROUD, and offered the use of his personal new tomb. ..
It was late Friday afternoon. ..

Painting of the Resurrection showing how the Shroud lay flat on the slab - enh. ySH0d.jpg 665x257 on holyface.all-catholic.net
The Resurrection of Christ is recorded in the Gospel in the following manner: "Early in the morning on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb. She saw that the stone had been moved away, so she ran off to Simon Peter and the other disciple (the one Jesus loved) and told them, 'The Lord has been taken from the tomb! We don't know where they have put him!' At that, Peter and the other disciple started out on their way toward the tomb. They were running side by side, but then the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He did not enter but bent down to peer in, and saw the wrappings lying on the ground. Presently, Simon Peter came along behind him and entered the tomb. He observed the wrappings on the ground and saw the piece of cloth which had covered the head not lying with the wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the disciple who had arrived first at the tomb went in. HE SAW AND BELIEVED." (John 20:1-10).
In regard to this Gospel passage (John 20:9) there is a footnote in The New American Bible which reads: "There was some special feature about the state of the burial wrappings that caused the beloved disciple to believe. Some suggest that Jesus had passed through them without their being unrolled."
After the Passover rest, early in the morning, the women went to the tomb and found it was empty. The women went back to town and told Peter and John. The two apostles, according to the Gospel, quoted above, went running to the tomb. Peter and then John entered the tomb and saw the Shroud and the other linens lying on the ground. "HE SAW AND BELIEVED." WHY? What did John see in the linens lying on the ground that convinced him of the Resurrection?
Some suggest that Jesus had passed through them without their being unrolled. In other words, when Jesus came back to life, He did not push aside the Shroud, as we do with the bed linens when we get up from bed, but having become now immaterialized, He passed through the Shroud. The Shroud and other linens which were over the body then became flat on the slab of stone. It seems indeed that the risen Body of Christ had become immaterial, spiritualized, as we may also see from the Gospel passage when our Lord on the same day appeared in the upper room even though the disciples "had locked the doors. " (John 20:19) ..
.. It was the state of the burial wrappings that caused St. John and St. Peter to believe in the Resurrection, as it is recorded in the Gospel of St. John.
The intact bloodstains (on the Shroud) indicate that the body was probably not removed by hands, otherwise the edges of the bloodstains would have been disturbed. The impression of the Holy Shroud has all the characteristics of a scorch produced by heat or intense light, which may have been discharged by the body of Christ at the moment of the Resurrection. All these points do not prove the Resurrection, however the correspondence to the Gospels is amazing. As Dr. Robert Buckling asserts: "the medical data from the Holy Shroud supports the Resurrection. When this medical information is combined with the physical, chemical and historical facts, there is strong evidence for Jesus' literal Resurrection." ..
.. Jesus after the Resurrection kept, not all, but some of the wounds of the crucifixion, as the hole of the nails on His hands (wrist) and feet. These wounds were not signs of pain and horror, as all wounds are, but signs of beauty and glory. When St. Thomas was invited by Our Lord to put his finger in those holes, St. Thomas was overwhelmed by the beauty and glory of Christ, so much so that he went down on his knees and said: "My Lord, and My God. " That was the first time that Jesus was called "God" in the Gospels. ..

EDIT:
Today Friday, November 2, 2012, the day of remembrance of all deceased ..
Here we sang: 'Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, He is our salvation, our eternal glory.'
Read Isaiah 25:
8. and death will be no more. The Lord Yahweh will wipe away the tears from all cheeks and eyes; he will take away the humiliation of his people all over the world: for Yahweh has spoken. 9. On that day you will say: This is our God. We have waited for him to save us, let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

And at the end we sang: 'You lead us, Lord, to the freshness of bright sources, to the garden, once lost .. Finally, one day you will appear in the light of dawn, and our waiting will end.'
'We walk together towards a beautiful country .. we will see His glory in a beautiful country. In my heart, yes, I know we will see His glory.'

'Later on, in those days after that disastrous time, the sun will grow dark, the moon will not give its light,
the stars will fall out of the sky and the whole universe will be shaken.
Then people will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.
And he will send the angels to gather his chosen people from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the sky.'
