When you count up all the subscriptions you are paying for then it all amounts to rather a lot of money. Not just software but right across the board. I have just done a review of subscriptions and cancelled all the ones that I don't really need, saves quite a bit of money each month. Its all too easy to say "That's not much each month, the price of a newspaper" Ten newspapers a month adds up. I'm not saying I don't need any, but some were easily for the chop. A subscription cleansing and more stringent consideration of an future ones is my way

I prefer lifetime but increasingly these are 'lifetime of major product version' (ie v1 lifetime licence won't cover v2 etc) rather than true 'lifetime of product'. I don't mind that for important software like Macrium which only updates major version every 2-3 years but for others they update so frequently that it becomes pointless and you might as well just wait for the inevitable giveaway version...

If I had ongoing subs for all products installed, many only occasionally used, I'd be bankrupt :)

If a product was subscription only I'd just choose a free alternative or one that has a reasonable one-off cost.
