Battle Trend micro or Mcafee ?

Compare list
Trend Micro or Mcafee
I've been reading all the latest posts about Trend or MCAfee carefully. On an average laptop, my BitDefender license is expiring. I'm not sure how to choose between Trend or MCAfee to replace it; their operating principles seem roughly similar... What do you recommend?
Now, choose McAfee. Light and cheap in licenses. @Trident is testing it everyday.

Just a petty thing on my part considering the protection and some of the features McAfee brings to the table, but I wish there was a back arrow when you open a panel, compared to ticking the home button, unless I'm not seeing it?

I used McAfee AntiVirus (not the suite), it's super light because it only scans files upon execution (that's fine by me) but my biggest grip with it, is that it has the worst user interface when it comes to whitelisting files:

1) The whitelist Window is super small and doesn't support DPI scaling for people with high resolution displays
2) You cannot exclude an entire folder, you have to exclude one file at at time
3) If the file you whitelisted gets updated, McAfee removes it from the whitelist, and you'd have to whitelist it again, which adds a lot of work as you have to whitelist the files with every update (ie. your VPN, or drivers folder, etc)

I'm not a fan of the UI in general, McAfee, but since there really aren't any settings to be opening the app to explore or adjust, I'll just let it do its thing and see if it eventually grows on me (I have a single user license). I did like TM's UI better, and at least it did have some settings and options that I liked.

I like McAfee alot but i always have issues when opening the main program window, this sometimes takes more than 40 seconds.

I appreciate you mentioning it, as sometimes the McAfee app takes too long to open, so I exit out of it and try re-opening it again 🙄
The protection is there, but the usability....well, there is better.

Just a update. So I thought I was purchasing Essential but Total Protection installed. Online Chat said Total was one of the best. I asked if he had a direct link to purchase Essential, and he said sorry, he didn't have a direct link to purchase the Essential version. Maybe a little bait and switch, or my error? So anyway, I got the refund, and will go from here :) So Onward and upward :)

Did you buy at the website i told you ?

Yep, I had tried it, but it didn't list Essential like McAfee did on their website, I just saw a key for AntiVirus 2024 (I just need a single key for 1 year on this notebook) and was concerned about that.
If you get Total Protection for this price you are settled , you have the most complete version almost for nothing.
I bought all my serials there for years, never any issue.

The bare McAfee Total Protection is the Essential package, if I'm not mistaken. It's become the only basic software package in the new lineup. Upgrades from there lead to McAfee+ subscriptions with privacy and identity protection.

I believe Identity Protection is included in Total Protection too.
These features are not running locally on the device and setup is mot mandatory.

Users have the option to not provide the data for monitoring.

I am using LiveSafe, I can’t really see anything that can be labelled redundant.

McAfee’s focus is less on antivirus bells and whistles (like 200+ setup parameters) and more on modern features that actually add real value to the protection.

The UI is not bad, but yes. Definitely could be improved.

Exclusions are not executed very well, it is almost as if McAfee, due to the Virus Protection pledge (as well as the insurance on more expensive products), doesn’t want curious fingers adding files left and right to exclusions list.

So performance and protection are top notch.
Users that want to stay away from modern features, users needing granular setup, McAfee is just not for them. It is a fundamentally very different concept from Kaspersky, Eset, Bitdefender and so on and it’s not for everyone. It’s one of these concepts that you either love or hate.

Trend Micro has a shiny UI, but under the splash of CSS that adds delightful animations, Trend Micro hides deep disappointment and underdeveloped technologies.
That’s another type of concept that people like me (maximalists and in search of premium) will never settle with.

Thank you both, that's why I thought I'd better add "Maybe a little bait and switch, or my error"? in my previous post. My error in not understating how it works with them. But again, I'm more of a AV+ or Internet Security type. I do the normal self monitoring things and have my account frozen with the credit bureaus :)

@Trident excellent post, and I especially agree with this, regarding some of your tests posted in the last 3-4 days :)
