Serious Discussion TuxTalk - Eset Smart Security Premium Thread

I have my ESET HIPS and Firewall rules. One for myself with some exclusion added, other one I created for sharing to other people. I forgot about sharing. I will have to check them in a VM to verify if everything is okay since I'm not running ESET at the moment.
In ESET Enterprise version, LiveGuard's aggressiveness can be increased by a level which is not possible in ESET Smart Security Premium. My config file for ESSP is tweaked to increase the aggressiveness level. I don't know if ESSP actually honors that high value.

Eset uses a layered defence.

Although Eset doesn’t classify them the way I would, the first layer is web protection.

Second layer is pre-execution.
This includes heuristics, static and dynamic code analysis and Eset uses a combination of local and cloud machine learning to analyse the results from both (SA and DA). LiveGuard is an additional layer specialising against zero days, as the rest is more geared to detect more of what’s already known. True zero days will be handled best by LiveGuard*

The third layer is anti-botnet, HIPS and supposedly, behavioural analysis. Eset in terms of behavioural blocking:
-Delivers very little but the high quality pre-execution detection compensates. Although Eset’s effectiveness not once or twice has been noticed by testing organisations to be lower than what Kaspersky, Bitdefender, Avast and potentially some others offer**
-Can be boosted by HIPS from users with skills.

*With 64mb limit, a padded file cannot be analysed by LiveGuard. However, this will typically come in an archive and will be much smaller. Eset LiveGuard does not attempt to find the archive password in file name, metadata and so on.
LiveGuard is a nice to have extra, but is far from what enterprise competitors offer.
**The tested versions usually do not have LiveGuard.

You reacted like this :oops: in my post #58. I said that there are people who complain about ESET, but I wasn't referring to you. That was just how I expressed myself. I used ESET in the past, but then I never used it again. So, I can't comment on how ESET is currently. But the feedback on ESET both here on MT and elsewhere is positive. You're a good person, easy to talk to, we talk, other members talk. In that other thread, which I won't mention, but everyone knows what I'm talking about, there was a member there who was getting on my nerves. Other than that, everyone here talks, jokes around, it's cool like that. I'm reading @Trident LiveGuard response, I don't even remember if ESET already had that, I'm pretty uninformed about what goes on behind the scenes at ESET. @Sorrento, we're in this together. 🤝

I value your input, & I was just commenting originally maybe as knee jerk reaction? My initial post was maybe just one feeling I have about ESET, I have been and still are a customer & this thread has given me a alternative perspective which is exactly why I come on here, there are no problems or hard feelings with you or anyone on this thread, when everyone agrees with me I will have concerns, the similes I put are often meaningless & are a reflection of my thoughts at that moment - no worries my friend at all!

On thinking on I should think more regarding my reaction to others posts !

Unlike others that implement TDT to check boxes, within the Eset ecosystem there is already memory scanner (to which TDT will become an extension) and there is all the technology necessary to utilise it properly.

Ransomware Remediation is a great addition.

So the list of AVs with this now is:
Bitdefender
Trend Micro
McAfee
Check Point/ZoneAlarm
Kaspersky? I believe
Eset

Gen Digital doesn’t offer ransomware remediation though Norton offers backup.

It’s important to note that ransomware remediation usually covers only media files, only up to a certain size so some files may be excluded from the automated backup and remediation.

Eset can now be classified as NGAV because ransomware remediation was the only thing they needed to add.

You just need to keep in mind that only Eset Ultimate Security provides ransomware remediation. Such and essential feature should be included in all their products.

Yeah, this product-centric pay-me-more approach is what used to hurt the Norton and McAfee sales years ago, and Eset is walking down the same road (not sure why, looking at others’ mistakes is a standard practice in business). They’ll learn. In 2-3 years.
