Hot Take uBlock Stripped - Dynamic Filtering is available on the webstore

Does anyone know if uBlock-Stripped can block these kinds of ads on Reddit?

They started using these sneaky ways to show ads that look like a topic or even a post. I tried a few things with Dynamic DNR filtering and even Privacy Inspector. Both were unsuccessful. (Maybe I just did not pick the right one?) I am not on Reddit a lot, but those are very sneaky ads... despite the fact they mention next to it that it is an ad.

I can't reproduce it on Edge and Brave (both with disabled browsers own protection). Perhaps someone like you using Vivaldi can check it.

Question,

Because I use Brave and Brave's adblocker is (my guess) rebuilding AdGuard Mv2 as much as possible. I think Brave's create your own (user) script(let) functionality will bypass the last Mv3 restriction to provide (in a slightly different way) uBO Mv2 like functionality. Firefox is now also implementing Brave Rust based adblocker, so it seems that uBO Mv2 will get a second life in the rist based adBlocker of Brave (and Firefox).

Today I enabled the Brave adblocker again and using it only in standard mode with only shields enabled Brave default AdBlock filters and the filter at the bottom AdBlock Only Mode supplemental list and paired it with UBS with Brave Shield disabled. Running it in worry-free mode (with 3P-code and download protection enabled), my Speedometer 3.1 bench mark was 20.2, while with Brave Shields disabled and AdGuard Base enabled it ran 20.0 (for comparison uBO-lite with default filters enabled ran 19.9) I repeated the test 3 times, each time with fresh browser start in different sequences (each time restarting the browser) to reduce impact of Linux cachinh mechnanisms.

from 20 to 20.2 is only a 1% percent performance increase, but ... I spend weekend tuning my old Laverda motor to gain 0.5% :-) So I am considering a special version of UBS, called AdShield Power Tools (for Brave) (when I develop a Firefox version it would be called AdShield Power Tools (for Red Fox).

The Block list Panel ould be called the Worry-free settings and the dashboard would only have
- Allow (white) List
- Custom rules manager
- Worry free settings
a) enable 3P-code and download block on domains on on familiar domains
b) enable additional security settings (the protections on Security & Privacy), but simply listed
c) add or remove generic domains and country codes for 3P code and download protection
d) enabled (auto deny cookie prompts)
e) enable worry free at startup

The popup panel would only have
- System settings (opening the dashboard)
- Worry-free safe surfing mode
- Cookie consent clicker
- Dynamic DNR filtering
- Privacy Inspector

What do you think of this idea to make an internal adblock companion which only has the power tools no filterlists?

@LinuxFan58

The situation with Firefox's built-in Rust ad-blocker may differ from that of Brave Ad-Shields:

Hot Take - Firefox browser has started shipping Brave's adblock-rust engine

Brave's speed is also directly proportional to the number of filter lists subscribed to in Ad-Shields.
A warning states that too many filter lists can slow down browsing speed.
Although the warning is general, it can be inferred that it is best to have 0 subscribed filter lists.

P.S.

Only Brave AdShield 0 rules subscribed + only 2 custom rules:

Firefox 0 rules on Rust Adblock.
The built-in anti-tracker feature probably doesn't block all threats like Brave does (maybe even too many); in my case, the DNS steps in.:

Your two extensions in Brave and Firefox will inevitably have to work differently.;)

The power tools are for me the most interesting part of the extension. In fact the decisive reason to keep the extension in Brave (after the testing period).
But what exactly would be the role of Dynamic DNR filtering? Besides the blocked 3p (code) requests, in the new setup blocked 3p items will not be shown from (now missing) inbound filterlists. So most of the time we would only see allowed items, what doesn't make sense. Unless the results of Brave filtering would be shown. Then it would be possible to block things that Brave allowed.

Cosmetic element picker is something I wouldn't miss.

Well only use case I can think of is stripping down websites you visit often. What I liked about AdGuard logger was the ability to create block rules from it. So the Dynamic DNR filtering is a sort of cross over of AG logger with uBO-Mv2 dynamic filtering.

Using AG logger, all the news websites I visit a lot were completely stripped.

Do you have suggestions?

Now just make that default, for those of use that prefer to whitelist as opposed to blacklist.
Thanks, but can you explain a little more? An extension can not whitelist domains blocked by Brave's internal adblocker, so are you referring to uBS or the spin off discussed with Jan Willy?

Why is DNR per-site? Why not make that on by default? By the time I visit a site for which I need to make DNR rules it's too late. I'd rather set exemptions to the default than have to create many, many, block rules. Even uBo allowed this.

For global use I made 3P-Matrix-lite 3P-Matrix-lite - Chrome Web Store

The reason why it is per site in UBS is to overrule blocks or allows of filter lists.

Submitted V 9.3 to CWS

Changelog
- updated filters
- improved Dynamic DNR filtering

When you click on the expand, you can see which filters cause a block or allow. When there is no filter the more info columns is grey, when only 1 allow or block it is cyaan en orange when multiple allow or block rules apply.

Yes, that's also the way I do. As long as the allowed requests slipped through the Brave protection, this will work and be useful. Are you sure that's the case in the new setup?
An extension can see what is allowed, not what is blocked, so the Dynamic DNR filtering for the Brave special would by default on (show what is) allow(ed)

An extension can see what is allowed, not what is blocked,...
Yes, and that's a disadvantage of leaving the blocking to Brave's filterlists. In the present setup you can have full control over blocking and allowing when Brave Shields disabled, in the proposed setup with enabled Brave Shields and without filterlists in the extension, only over allowing. I wonder if I would be happy with it.

It's easy to add a (strong) global rule to custom ABP rules.

@n8chavez

In UBS you can copy old fashioned ABP style block rules. ABP-import is based on AG Mv3 user rules.

In uBO-Lite you have a section where you can import cosmetic ABP rules and a hidden section where you can import static ABP rules, which Jan Willy showed to you.

I preferred the simplicity of AG's user rules to import them in one place.

I copied/used a lot mechanism/ideas from other extensions:
  • ABP-import = AG Mv3 user rules
  • Filter (block) lists has Auto detect language and enable them automatically = AG Mv2 option to automatically enable additional language filter lists
  • Allow (white) list = AG Mv3 allow list
  • Cosmetic element picker = uBO-Lite element picker
  • Worry free mode = inspired by Ghostery never consent with additional third-party scripts/frames protection inspired by uMatrix Mv2 Easy Medium mode plus extra 3P-download protection through CSP sand box inspired by Matrix3 Mv3 prototype.
  • Cookie consent clicker = inspired by Click-O-matic
  • Dynamic DNR filtering = inspired by uBO Mv2 dynamic filtering per domain
  • Privacy Inspector = fingerprinting protections inspired by JShelter project, the user interface by NoScript Mv3
  • Security & Privacy tab also has an option to delete history (except passwords) at browser start (there are many extensions offering this)

This cookie conset clicker is really PITA sometimes. In this example i can't even click the automate your choice because it's hiding behind the cookie banner.
