Poll - [Updated 23/3/18] Browser extension comparison: Malwares and Phishings

Browser: Google Chrome 65 x64
Malware and phishing links: 10 malc0de, 10 vxvault, 10 openphish, 10 verified phishtank, 10 unverified phishtank
Total: 50 links
Extensions: recently downloaded from Chrome Web Store
- Google Safe Browsing (built-in chrome's protection)
- AdGuard AdBlocker: default settings, uses Google Safe Browsing (delayed) and their own database
- Avira browser safety: default settings
- Norton Safe Web: default settings
- Bitdefender Trafficlight: default settings, it rarely blocks any malware links, just old ones
- Avast Online Security: default settings, only has phishing protection, expected to score 0 against malwares
- Netcraft Extension: default settings, only has phishing protection, expected to score 0 against malwares
- uBlock Origin with some additional filters

NOTE: the result can vary from day-to-day. Tomorrow with different links, the result can be very different. All are live links but they can be dead a few minutes after the test. No duplication

Results:

In the new AdGuard beta 3.0.3 you van add and update custom filters.
It's a bit lighter than before, but uBlock remains the lightest and most configurable.

uBlock0rigin (Raymond Hill) definitely deserves credits for the innovative GUI of uMatrix (matrix style) and his skills to combine and simplify existing mechanisms (most NoScript and AdBlock users moved over to uBlock). Just to see how innovative uBlock is, I will show how many static AdBlock rules are needed to accomplish a three mouse click task in uBlock

:) After this awkward moment Extension - A first look at SmartAdblock for Firefox and Chrome I tried whether I could suppress the pop-up.

@Evjl's Rain

What do you think of the test on this site --> AvLab

Ublock did not pass the test, although I do not like the ublock without being with appropriate filters, I think that adguard standard comes out better

Here on my system I'm using the set. Adguard (default) + McAfee Web + Malwarebytes is coming out well, last month was with ESET Nod32 + Adguard also was not bad.

I have some suspect with this test but it's test so I have no comment
My concern is they use very old links because some extensions which had hih detection rates in their test performed extremely poorly in mine such as panda, avast

what kind of adguard you mentioned? desktop or extension. Adguard extension is always useless in my tests

mcafee wwebadvisor requires installation by exe => not an extension
the extension does nothing

I am using adguard extension and McAfee got the 6 month antivirus from the Giveaway section.

About Ublock I feel that it is not effective in the default settings, maybe the advertising companies are paying them to pass on certain advertisements, even though the adguard is also so.

I decided to test some filters I picked up on some of your comment, you think they're good? I didn't find the navigation so heavy.

you must enable easylist. That's the reason why you get so many missed ads
adguard base filtering in your screenshot is a supplement for easylist

easylist and adguard english filters alone are ~100k+ entries

you can add this filter
https://1hos.cf/mini

if you afraid someone paying ublock to get pass, you should uncheck all ublock filters in local, not recommended

I think the excess filters can disrupt more than help, the pages do not work right and this can be paranoia. If it is case, best not access the Internet.:geek:

See this example the filter "Extreme Measures" When marking it the comments do not work and this can happen also with Disqus, Google+ and others

You can simply enable advanced settings, whitelist domains to see wich setting is blocking the site youre viewing, then just enable it either permanently on all pages , or just on specific page

below my filters: everything enabled from ublock origin+ these as custom filters

It's like I said the filter is "Extreme Measure" and within the list the custom options it blocks. In fact you can edit the filter by looking for the related line.

or by enabling the advanced option as you said

that's why it's named "extreme measures" :D
I admit it does block some safe contents
I don't recommend it for everyone

many filter makers don't like disqus for some reasons, perhaps due to privacy issues

english filter (adguard) = easylist + adguard base filter: are sufficient

I switched the filters, those I was using before found very aggressive good for paranoics, comments from sites did not work, sites that have streaming (FirstOneTV) also not and others.... and right here in the forum is blocked the form to insert link (filter cosmetic)

I am using these now, is stable yet I have not noticed problems, may even pass some privacy but I believe that does not compromise the security.

Mcafee Webadvisor :
Download McAfee WebAdvisor 4.0.7.213
1 link dead
17/19
Note: the extension and App cant block the downloading process but if you tweak browser to always ask you where to save files you see the McAfee blocked the page and you will not allow the Exe to download! anyway in real world there is no such URL that end to Exe file(at least i never saw)and McAfee will protect you.
Can confirm, worked great! I'm loving McAfee's extension!

Well if youre advanced user you probably want to enable medium mode of ublock origin, either just add ads/trackers list you find, dont bother with phishing/malware filterlists....i have 433k web filters & 143k cosmetic filters, + netcraft + trace currently in firefox, working pretty smooth

The main tip should probably be something like '' dont stack extensions wich do same thing'' because you wont benefit more in terms of security/privacy. Aswell more extensions you have, more visible you are

I know you dont need to be paranoid, but i would say ublock origin is fine to have 100-400k filters, 1m + is probably paranoia, because you must enable phishing/malware lists with most of them being outdated to compare against extension like netcraft in phishing

For me is paranoia. Sure is better to use filters for ublock but for normal user without happy click is paranoia. Never i used filters and never i had one problem. One ad blocker one extesion like bitdefender malwarebytes or avira browser safety and for extra extra protection netcraft you are super secure. And if you use Kaspersky free or forticlient or and Avast the last time you don t need anything accept ad blocker. Is my poor opinion . All the extra extensions killl the speed of your borwser .

It kinda depends of your pc, only difference i can see is in ram being used, but still doenst matter because i sit at 60% ram usage while having browser, whatsapp, games, spotify, etc on...if you have cheap 200$ laptop, its total different case

For me the ublock origin is mandatory, i can live without other extensions because of avast web filter, bookmarks and safe browsing habits ( current setup)

Do i ever need netcraft or any other security/ privacy extension? Probably not
I would get rid of extension slowing me down or annoying me somehow, for sure :emoji_innocent:

Were all different and we have own choises of extensions, browsers, antiviruses and other lifestyle
I still agree overkill should be avoided, but im not punishing myself or someone because he uses extension a or b
