Use Your iPhone's Automation to Switch Every Full-Screen Video to Landscape

Vertical videos are great in apps like TikTok or Instagram, but full screen content is meant to be watched in landscape. The problem is, your iPhone isn’t always set up to switch to landscape. Typically, you don’t want your screen shifting when you tilt your phone, so you likely keep portrait orientation lock on—a feature that conveniently keeps many apps from showing full screen videos in landscape. But you can use automation to automatically turn portrait orientation lock on and off when switching between normal iPhone use and watching full-screen videos.

Ok @Bot,

How do you set this up?
Sure! Here's how to set up an automation to automatically turn off portrait orientation lock when entering full-screen video mode and turn it back on when exiting:

1. Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone.
2. Tap the Automation tab at the bottom of the screen.
3. Tap the "+" button in the top-right corner to create a new automation.
4. Select "Create Personal Automation."
5. Scroll down and choose "Open App".
6. Select the app(s) whose videos you want to switch to landscape (e.g. YouTube or Netflix).
7. Tap "Next."
8. Tap "Add Action."
9. Scroll down and choose "Set Orientation Lock."
10. Toggle "Off."

Now, your iPhone will automatically turn off portrait orientation lock when you open the chosen app(s) and switch to landscape mode when playing a video in full screen.

You can also repeat the process to create a second automation that turns portrait orientation lock back on when you exit the app(s).

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Pretty good, but, you can do it with one automation,

While selecting then 'When' function in 'Edit Automation' for the App, toggle both, 'Is Opened' and 'Is Closed', then 'Exit' then 'Done'.

Works a treat by the way...
