I'm honestly surprised this wasn't implemented sooner. Because up until now, you could simply enter wrong date of birth and every single website would let you access it. I'm not against it per se, but I am against shoddy implementation of age verification. After all, if you want to buy alcohol in store, you have to show your ID to prove you're old enough.

If we must have some form of age verification online, I like EU approach of creating an open source app that scans your ID and only remembers if you're over 18 or not; and then shares "yes" or "no" with websites. But websites asking me to take a selfie, send them my ID/passport as a proof of age? No, thank you.

They should just let families do the policing. Instead of asking everybody for ID. Maybe Windows would have checkbox under accounts to indicate user is a minor. Asking everybody for ID excludes a whole big segment who don't have ID. When I am 85 I don't think I can walk to the gov office to get an up tp date ID.

In my country, everyone below 70 has to renew their ID every 5 years. If you're 70+, your ID is valid for 40 years though at the end of the year this changes and the ID will be valid permanently.

Having ID is mandatory for adults and you can be fined if you don't have one.

So, you need ID to watch porn in the U.S, but not to vote in elections? Awesome priorities.
we had a local municipal election today, I had to produce my "federal Real ID" state-issued photo driver's license in order to vote. No comment re digital porn... but privacy concerns are not unfounded. I vote to support / donate to the EFF.

It's always been the case the 1% ruin it for the other 99% so we need to enact laws and systems to protect everyone that removes everyone's privacy for fake security. You give people the greatest tool in the history of civilization (the internet) and they turn it into a scammers /predators paradise. There have always been 'outliers' or 'renegades' that have changed history for the better the problem is people being people abuse the system or technology resulting in a corrupt society or system.

On age verification the kids are smarter than their parents, they have been using VPNs & encrypted E2EE apps since they were babies. Kids will always break the rules or rebel against the system of authority. The problem is parents are too lazy and don't do their main and only job of parenting or teaching their kids safe browsing/gaming/security/privacy hygiene, people have advocated their role as parents and would prefer others to raise their kids.
