What movie are you watching or planning to watch?

I'm watching this tonight:

This film is not exactly a traditional type film, it seemed more like an art film in some ways.

This film was not what I had expected. It was not as good as I had expected. I did not like it as much as I had expected.

However, there was still something about this film that I can not quite describe.

It was one of those films. I felt that maybe I needed to watch it again.
I saw Under the Skin in theater when it was released in US. Definitely "one of those films" -- I should watch it again...

Cool, you are the only person I know who got to see it in a movie theater (cinema). It did not play in my entire state and was not available for streaming at release.

What Is It?

The 2013 science fiction film Under The Skin was directed and co-written by Jonathan Glazer.

It was somewhat based on the novel Under The Skin by Michel Faber. The film stars the actress Scarlett Johansson.

Under the Skin – Movie Review:

My Thoughts

I think that I first found out about this film several years ago.

It was thanks to Grace Randolph when I saw a video on her YouTube channel Beyond The Trailer.

The video was called: Under the Skin Official Trailer + Trailer Review – Scarlett Johansson : HD PLUS:

The movie trailer looked interesting, and it looked like a movie that I wanted to see.

There was something indescribable about the trailer. It had a dream-like (surreal-like) feel.

I wanted to see this movie at a movie theater. However, it did not play in my area. It was a limited release film.

Back then, I remember trying to find this movie online, but I could not.

Many months passed before it was available for me to watch. I was finally able to watch this film.

This film is not exactly a traditional type film, it seemed more like an art film in some ways.

Some of the minor characters in the movie have very hard to understand, probably Scottish accents.

Most of those characters who were hard to understand were probably not actors or actresses.

They were likely people who did not realize that they were in a movie at first.

This is definitely not a film for everyone. It definitely has its flaws. However, some parts of the film work well.

I wish the all black room was shown more.

The amazing eerie and somewhat alien music by Mica Levi (Micachu) really saved this film for me.

The music went well with most of the scenes.

Mica Levi (Micachu) deserves more recognition for her amazing music for this film.

It helped to save this production. The music was one of the best things about it.

Here is a good short featurette about the music for this film:

Under the Skin Featurette – The Music World (2014) – Scarlett Johansson Sci-Fi Movie HD:

Here is a YouTube playlist of the soundtrack:

This film would be better if some parts were filmed again. It should be done with actors and actresses.

The current version uses people who did not realize they were in a movie at first.

This movie would also be better if: some characters had their dialogue dubbed.

This would make it easier to understand what they are saying.

It would be improved if it was reedited to be more accessible to a larger audience.

Adding new scenes would better explain and show more of the science fiction elements of this film.

This film was not what I had expected. It was not as good as I had expected. I did not like it as much as I had expected.

However, there was still something about this film that I can not quite describe.

It was one of those films. I felt that maybe I needed to watch it again.

And that I needed to better form my opinion of how I really feel about this film.

Maybe I will like the film better if I watch it again. However, I still have not watched it again yet.

Nice review and videos posted, thanks :) I'll put it on my watch list for now, and consider it later.

Right now I'm watching, The Umbrella Academy, S1 E6. So far, not too bad. But I'd like to watch something that gets resolved in a night, compared to all the 3-5 season series I've been watching :)

Hello @Halp2001, that trailer for Under The Skin is what had me really wanting to see it, the music also sets the mood.

Just like the music in the movie itself.

To me the trailer is better than the movie.

But the movie is worth watching at least once for the black void scenes alone, and for something different.

I possibly liked Amulet better overall and the performances, except of the main character (Alec Secareanu as Tomaz).

But I liked the music and black void scenes in Under The Skin better.
Hi @goodjohnjr . I’m glad you mentioned the music and the black void scenes, because they are truly the most striking aspects of Under the Skin. I also read from other sources that the director drew inspiration from 2001: A Space Odyssey to give the film that surreal atmosphere. I enjoy movies that are not completely pre-digested, the ones that force you to analyze them more deeply, although I admit that depending on the moment I also appreciate something lighter.

In this case, I had to look up information about some of the visual objects to better understand the message, since much of it is hidden or implied. That was what finally convinced me it was worth watching. 🌌🎶🌀

The 2008 Japanese adventure animated (anime) television show Michiko & Hatchin.

Michiko & Hatchin: The Best Anime Journey:

Michiko & Hatchin REVIEW [Talkisoba]:

My Thoughts

I remember seeing the trailer for this television show on television almost two years ago or more. It looked good.

It had a nice and unique concept. It was made by some people who have created some good anime.

So, I was expecting to really like this anime television show.

This anime had good visuals, good music, and a unique and interesting concept.

It featured diversity, varied locations and characters, and a good atmosphere. The English dub was good too.

However, it had a terrible ending. The conclusion was so bad that it really hurt the entire television show, in my opinion.

It ended in a way that felt like a slap in the face to the audience.

My brother GC and I left with a negative opinion of this television show because of how it ended.

I liked this anime better than my brother GC did. It had more potential. It was not as good as I had expected.

The characters did not grow as much as I felt that they should have. It ended on a terrible note.

Looking at the trailer and opening credits again while preparing this post made me want to watch it again.

It brought back some positive feelings and memories for this anime.

Maybe we were too harsh on it because of how it ended.

There were some beautiful moments in this anime.

The music and visuals all came together to create something wonderful.

It really connected with me in a way that was like watching a beautiful sunset while daydreaming.

However, it is a shame that it did not reach its full potential.

It had possibly one of the worst endings of a television show that I can think of.

I still respect this anime for having an interesting and unique concept.

And for taking a risk with perhaps a somewhat more realistic and negative ending.

There is still some hope in that ending, and some positives.

But we had hoped for a better ending, and a more positive one.

It includes diversity and focuses on a mother and daughter relationship.

This relationship is at the center of the story and features as the main characters.

This anime is worth watching at least once. I get the feeling that I will probably like it better if I watch it again one day.

There are some beautiful moments scattered throughout this anime.

That left positive feelings until this day.

So I still recommend seeing it once, even with all the flaws.

The Brain Hack – Short Film:

My Thoughts

I watched this short film back in 2015, and this is what I said about it in a post from that year:

I watched this short film before going to sleep.

It was interesting and had pretty good quality for a short film like this.

At the very end of the movie, you might want to look away to avoid having a possible seizure.

Under The Skin is definitely one of those movies that leaves you trying to figure it out.

I would count it as an art house film, so it is not mainstream.

After I watched it, I looked up videos with other people's analysis of it, like the one by Chris Stuckmann, back when his YouTube channel was good.

You are welcome @Jonny Quest.

I must warn you that it is more of an art house movie, slow, with hard to understand dialogue at times (strong Scottish accents), and up to the audience to interpret some things.

So you might not like it.

I did not like it as much as I had hoped.

I liked Saint Maud, The Artifice Girl, and maybe even Amulet better.

The 2015 short film The Brain Hack.

The Brain Hack – Trailer:

The Brain Hack – Short Film:

My Thoughts

I watched this short film back in 2015, and this is what I said about it in a post from that year:

The Brain Hack caught my attention because, beyond the science fiction layer, it leaves an intriguing idea: if we could “hack” the brain, would we perceive a deeper reality? The short film uses images to trigger visions, but in real life experiments with electromagnetic fields have shown that perception can change — some people report sensing invisible presences, others describe intense emotions. Maybe it’s just an illusion, or maybe it’s a hint that reality is far more complex than we assume. 🧠 ⚡ 🌌

Among so many movies and series I came across this curiosity: Tom and Jerry: Spy Quest. When I saw it, I remembered what our fellow member @Jonny Quest shared in the nicknames thread (post 263), and thought it would be a nice camaraderie nod to his childhood and his love for animation. Here’s the IMDB link. 🎬🤝👦

When you finish each season, it would be great to read your impressions, it's always interesting to see how everyone experiences Dark. 🌀
Well, here are my thoughts regarding Dark :)

Even though it was in German translated to English, I still had CC on, which at times was distracting due to what was being said and what was displayed in CC text. I tried it with and without CC, but stayed with CC.

It was an interesting ride. I liked the cave and doors that eventually turned into higher tech devices. Of the first venture? where Mikkel came to the fork in the tunnel, gave a glimpse that this was going to have other destinations and times involved.

I appreciated that the director towards the end of season 1? showed us comparison photos of the characters in their youth, and grown up, and that we saw reminders throughout of photos and names on walls and in the bunker.

I liked the addition of the Schrodingens Cat, and of some interesting thoughts posted on Reddit regarding that. In that S3 Ep7, is where Jonas said, "I can't do this anymore", and I agreed with him, is where I wanted to end that episode and go the last Ep8. It was just getting to be a bit much in that Ep7 of all the back and forth year changes. But, I hung in there and was very happy when they tied it all together in the last episode. That is where you're glad you watched it all the way through and kept track, paid attention, to be rewarded with the payoff. (like watching the movie, Michael Clayton to the end, the payoff)

Of some of the concepts of, would we change anything if we could do it all over again, or does the heart want what it wants, and we'd repeat ourselves? Of the "A man lives three lives. The first one ends with the loss of naivety, the second with the loss of innocence, and the third with the loss of life itself. It's inevitable that we go through all 3 stages", was only for what happened with Jonas, or apply to our lives, in which I would consider it 4 seasons of life.

I got a kick out of when the tables had turned of Katherina hugging and sniffing Ulrich after she found the hair on him of Hannah's, to the alternate time of when Hannah found a hair of Katharina's on Ulrich and hugged and sniffed him to confirm here suspicions.

My conclusion after watching this, was that it was now time to watch a nice, light, easy and breezy, Christopher Nolan movie like, Inception, or Memento, to help get my mind back on terra firma 😅

A couple of me, just being me, annoyances through this mind bending adventure: Could someone, anyone please give Jonas the teenager (not the Stranger or Adam) some lines, Director, writer's, please, besides the non reply stone faced look when questioned (about simpler things, not of deeper time travel ideas). But maybe those lines were carried out by the other versions of himself?

What was with all the walking through the woods, seemingly to nowhere, with no trails, other than the one to the cave? To many tears and teary eye on demand scenes, where I didn't think it was needed. Again, just me being overly critical. But all in all, it was a great ride :)
