I've just run a test: I get around 975 ish from PlusNet (BT) down (ping 7) 110 up which is about right with Ethernet on a desktop - With Mullvad on London 150 miles again Ethernet, I'm getting 790 with a ping of 22, But on an iPhone 15 near the router only get 489 with a ping of 23 again with Mullvad same UK London server - I do get more than that with ExpressVPN 880+ with HideAway 900+ or for the short time I used it Kaspersky VPN 960 ish but again all on Ethernet, wireless is governed by many things & the only true speed is using an Ethernet connection, on my new iPad I get faster wireless speeds sometimes, your router, wireless congestion all sorts affect wireless - (I do have smart TV's/cameras/ & others running in background which probably shaves some off wireless) All speeds acceptable to me & probably makes zero difference to page loading & general use.

I just ran 2 tests: one directly from the unifi router no vpn: 912 / 40 this is very typical. But on this computer testing from VMware Guest OS fedora 43 running mullvad vpn it's 132 / 37 so a big loss by the numbers but not noticeable to me in terms of pages loading etc. The router has "filters" -- Host has some "filters"... I think Linux VM may slow it a tad more than win10_VM, as the Host is windows, and I see closer to 300 down with mullvad on a win10_VM_Guest, maybe 400 with Proton vpn on win10_VM. There's at least one SmartTV running on the network somewhere in the house, ie, I don't do anything to "optimize" the test.

From my Speedtest laptop app. My default ISP speed.

Connecting with the lowly and often chastised F-Secure (LOL)....and their VPN, connecting to the nearest location to me, Chicago.

That is to much of a loss, unless the, your VPN can't keep up with those speeds? (if something like that could be an issue?)
When I used the Proton paid version and connected to the sever nearest to me, were always close to my ISP speeds, as well as Mullvad.
When I had 300Mbps service, I never saw a big difference between the speeds, either.

Did you try a different server location, or using a different VPN protocol?
You think that's a big loss, you probably wouldn't even notice it.

I've just done a few speed tests, switching between servers and getting almost 1.6 every single time. I think I've just had bad timing with previous tests (high server load), or maybe it was my ISP's issue.

I think we need to add nym, interesting Vpn see here Nym | the world's most private VPN for desktop & mobile
No problem with F-Secure, but for McAfee...oops. On VirusTotal the link came up clean. Obviously a FP on McAfee's part.
