Stuff wears out. I’ve had controllers get drift since the original dual shock. I used to have to buy controllers yearly when I was younger and had more time for games. I never expected them to last an entire console cycle. It seems shocking to me that people are just now noticing this happen, maybe my thumbs are too aggressive.

The speed at which the new controllers are wearing out is concerning, though.

Hopefully Sony learned from Nintendo's continually abysmal response to the joy-con drift issue.
They need to invest in fixing the problem as soon as possible, and set up a process allowing consumers to get any defective controllers fixed.
