Just yesterday, we told you that Winamp was preparing to launch a new audio player, called Winamp. The new version of Winamp is now available and most existing Winamp users may be surprised to learn that it is a web-based application.

Head over to Winamp, create an account, and start using the service on the Web. It is quite the leap from a desktop audio player that has attracted a large fan base thanks to its features and customization options, to a web-based player.

Users may have questions, including how they get their music collection to play in the player, or which features are new or have been removed. Since this new version of Winamp is web-based, it is necessary that users create an account to get started.

The first thing that users may notice after signing-in to their account for the first time is that the new Winamp player does not support integrating a local music library or online library of audio files to an account.

No thanks. Being unable to add my own music library defeats everything Winamp is supposed to be and goes against the main reason I used Winamp to begin with. I have not used Winamp in a long time but this new web player makes no sense and would be useless to me. I will stick with Media Monkey in Windows and Strawberry in Linux. I had high hopes for the new Winamp but I guess it was not to be.

I am not a musician, but I care about how to listen to music with very good headphones at home via my PC.
I was wondering if Winamp is appropriate and high-quality software that musicians also use to listen to audio professionally?

Or they prefer Windows Media Player which is build into Windows?
Thanks for your inputs.
Foobar2000 is your best choice.

For Windows 11, isn't the default new Media Player, okay and enough?

Well, you wrote:

My reply: the one and only Foobar2000. :)

Winamp for iOS is now available for download via TestFlight. We take a look at what the beta version of the music player looks like.

The app's UI is pleasant, and consists of 4 tabs: Tracks, Albums, Artists and Playlists. Use the tabs to browse your music library, tap on a track to listen, shuffle the order, or use the menu to add it to the playlist. The options are fairly self-explanatory.

Winamp confirms it will go open source later this year

Winamp, the popular media player for Windows, will go open source later this year. Its makers announced that the source code for Winamp's Windows app will be available to developers worldwide on September 24.

Winamp explained in its blog post that it's opening up the code to invite collaboration from developers living in different parts of the world who can contribute their passion, expertise, and ideas to "help this iconic software evolve."

Commenting on the latest announcement, Winamp's CEO Alexandre Saboundjian said:
"This is a decision that will delight millions of users around the world. Our focus will be on new mobile players and other platforms. We will be releasing a new mobile player at the beginning of July. Still, we don't want to forget the tens of millions of users who use the software on Windows and will benefit from thousands of developers' experience and creativity. Winamp will remain the owner of the software and will decide on the innovations made in the official version,"

Winamp, everyone's favorite media player for Windows from the late 90s, is now open-source. The app's official X account announced that the legacy version of Winamp by Nullsoft is now available on GitHub, giving "developers and retro lovers" a chance to dig into the insides of the iconic player we all love dearly.

Winamp announced plans to go open-source earlier this Spring, and now, the app is available on GitHub for everyone to poke around.

Winamp source code released, but developers criticize its restrictive license

The legacy media player, Winamp, has gone open source. But the license has come under fire from the open-source community.
A few months ago, Llama Group SA, the company that owns Winamp, announced its intention to release the source code for Winamp on September 24. That's exactly what has happened.

Winamp source code is now available on GitHub

The source code that has been released is related to the classic version of the music player. The license documentation, which you can view on Winamp's official GitHub page, is captioned "Winamp Collaborative License (WCL) ". That doesn't sound good, does it?

Winamp updated the license to allow forking, but....

Guess what? Winamp's license violated GitHub's Terms of Services, which says: "By setting your repositories to be viewed publicly, you agree to allow others to view and "fork" your repositories (this means that others may make their own copies of Content from your repositories in repositories they control)." There is an open discussion about this on Winamp's GitHub.
The company edited the licensing information (WCL 1.0.1) to allow forking of the code, but for private use only, i.e. you are still not allowed to distribute your custom versions that have been modified. Well, Winamp's source code has nearly 1000 forks at the time of writing this article, so that's some good news.
DrO, the creator of WACUP (Winamp Community Update Project), criticized the company's licensing restrictions on reddit, and also published a statement about it on WACUP's Facebook page, saying that he would not use the source code for his version of the music player.

*Grabs popcorn*

Just have a look at their GitHub issues page.
It's full of spam and troll posts...
