also to go to 20h2 do i have to rely on 2004 upgrade first (coming from 1909)?

Nope. Latest upgrades always include old one.
So you can directly upgrade to 20H2

My girlfriend's laptop got it via normal Windows Update as a feature update. This seemed to update a lot faster than using the update assistant

Normal Windows Update downloads just like it was a cummulative update. Assistant downloads the whole ISO image of the new build

I never used any reg tricks ,but I did do a custome install of windows 2004 recently and took out many things, machine is working great ,just the version number is not right.

Any issue with updating from Win 1909 direct to 20H2?

I suppose not but just ask to be sure.

The reason is because my MS SP4 goes up from 1903 to 1909 then stopped without any further update notification.

So I used Windows Update Assistant and it updated straight to 20H2 bypassing 2004

I updated from Windows 2004 to Windows 20H2 a few minutes ago.
And as far as I can see without problems.

Two weeks ago I also updated my Win10 Pro (build 2004) to the latest version 20H2 (via Windows Update): no problems so far.

Immediately after waking up, I inadvertently ran the 1909-2004 update. I noticed it after the reboot had settled down. It was a sudden farewell to 1909. I downloaded the program and updated it to 20H2. It's more stable than I expected.

The only issue I've noticed is that optional updates get installed anyway, even without user intervention. Perhaps the mere act of inspecting the optional updates triggers the install process; a microsoft Schrödinger's cat, if you will.

Received the update today via Windows Update.
