Windows 8 users are probably looking forward to getting some much needed improvements to their operating system. The adoption rate of Microsoft’s latest operating system leaves no doubt as to how unsatisfied people are with it – Windows 7 still dominates the operating system market share. Even Windows XP beats Windows 8!

Come April 8, however, Microsoft will be releasing the latest Windows 8.1 update.

So what’s going to be new?

One of the main things is that the operating system will now automatically know whether you’re using a desktop or a tablet – that may seem a to be trifling detail but it can make the user experience much better.

Another change is that Microsoft is bringing back the title bar at the top for full-screen apps; so, if you want to “get out” of the app, you simply have to click the “X” at the title bar.

Now I am not sure whether this detail falls under “wanted” and “improvement”, but the Windows Store is now automatically pinned to the taskbar on the desktop. At least when you need to purchase something – anything – you have fewer clicks/taps to make.

If you are the type that does not do well with changes, though, and you want to keep things the way they are, there’s no need to fret. In this latest update, Microsoft is going to give you the option to set your startup preferences. So, whether you want the desktop or the tiles, you can take your pick.

On the downside, if you’re looking for the Start Button of old, that’s not going to happen for this update. However, Microsoft does say that a future update will bring that back – sort of. That is, the old Start Button will be combined with live tiles. Hopefully, that will provide the happy medium between the two.

I had the latest build maybe three weeks ago, when Microsoft signed it as the final release and was already available on MSDN.

Finding the latest/stable/final build was easy... I found the download links on different forums, hosted by several upload sites. Then you have to do the standalone updates on the right order, with restarts. (Sorry, I did this several weeks ago... couldn't give the details.)

My build, which I hope is really the final build of Windows 8.1 Update 1 is:

9600.17031.x86fre.winblue_gdr.140221-1952

Please correct me if I'm wrong. Let me know if this is different from what Microsoft will release via Windows Update!

The update received are not for update 1. I too got them. They are for flash player for IE, windows malicious software removal tool etc..
Wait for the official update through windows. They may be sending it once they send all the small updates and then the major one.

Windows 8.1 Update 1 will be removed from Windows update in may or after may.

Correction: Windows 8.1 Update 1 is a mandatory update to receive further security patches and updates, after May 2014. Applies to Windows 8.1 users. ;) So basically, you must install it.

Windows 8.1 Update 1 Download link:

64 bit ( 691 MB ) - http://download.windowsupdate.com/d..._e6f4da4d33564419065a7370865faacf9b40ff72.msu

The above is one of six updates and is the largest update for the Windows 8.1 X64 Bits Operating System.
You will need this Windows Update for Windows 8.1 X64 Bits Operating System. But is only one of six updates.

Not a 100% sure, but may have to burn this update to disk, before it will be transfer to the PC???

Finally installed the update. There was only one file which is >800MB..
Have a question though.. With the new update, the taskbar is visible even in the start screen, but when I move the mouse away from the taskbar it disappears and even if I try to bring my mouse to the bottom again it does not re-appear. Is this how its supposed to behave ? I thought its going to remain there all the time.

Take the mouse to the top, then down again. Taskbar re-appears.

I totally gorked my laptop with the manual update file. It updated fine and it then tried updating with the newest automatic update. I then rebooted and it was a blank screen with nothing but a cursor. Can't system restore, refresh or system repair. Oh well. Wiping the hard drive and starting fresh. Not too bad since I had just done that last week.
