PUP detection in WD can be enabled by applying this registry tweak.

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender\MpEngine]
"MpEnablePus"=dword:00000001

Throughout the timeline of event, Windows Defender PUP protection is not enabled by default which you need to apply the registry tweak.

Since you are using Voodoshield, then it will take care off since the cloud engines may provide immediate results.

I had no idea you had to manually enable PUP detection in Windows Defender, seems rather unintuitive for your average joe. Maybe it's not ready for prime time.

Some users actually like junk programs, so Windows lets them enjoy their junk, if they want to.

PUA detection is not enabled by default in Creators Update but you can enable it via registry hack as mentioned above and then you can test it here:

Feature Settings Check – Potentially Unwanted Applications » AMTSO

WD should detect this PUA test (safe) file.
It works:

does it work on windows 10 home?

EDIT: just tried it, and it does!

I have the Creators Update installed. I downloaded the file with no warning. but when clicked on it in downloads, a window popped up reading Windows Defender SmartScreen protected your PC. No registry hack done. But maybe I'm misunderstanding this test. :)

No, you have to add an entry to the registry which enable the PUP detection. Then you can download the test file.

I downloaded the registry hack from "howtogeek" and added the registry for enabling pup detection. But defender still can't detect the test file from amtso, nothing. Scanned nothing. Anyone?
