Popular adware hunter AdwCleaner has hit version 5 with the addition of a new and improved generic detections engine.

The program can optionally reset a range of Windows settings — proxies, winsock, TCP/IP, firewall, IPsec, the BITS queue — as well as IE and Chrome policies.

AdwCleaner’s Quarantine Manager is fully integrated into the program for easier access.

There’s a new Debug mode available from the Options menu, and the program is now officially compatible with Windows 10.

The new release did a good job of cleaning up a test PC for us, but beware, it can be aggressive, and might highlight something you want to keep. Check the program’s recommendations carefully before you delete anything.

It's a very good software. I used it on my Friend's infected PC and it worked like a charm. Removed all toolbar, auto-redirects from the Browsers.

It's a shame it still has the same terrible user interface, which makes it close to useless if it detects anything that you do no want to remove.

@Malware1 I should have made myself clearer. Yes, you can select what items you want to delete. However, AdwCleaner does not give a description to any the items it detects. It lists items without saying what particular threat they belong to. This can make it very hard to determine what items belong to software you want to keep. In some cases, it will be clear, e.g. due the folder the detected item is in. In other cases, it is not clear at all, e.g. a seemingly random registry key.

If you want to let AdwCleaner delete everything it finds, there will be no issue. However, if you want to keep some items, it's just too much of a hassle trying to figure out what needs to be keep and what needs to be deleted, which is a shame, as the detection rate is very good, and it could be a truly excellent tool.
