Seems Behavior Shield is not fully integrated in Avast! yet.

@RejZoR realized some tests and posted the results in Avast forum.

Something weird is going on. Behavior Shield detected only 1 threat where AVG using Software Analyzer detected same things no problem. What's more bizarre is that none of the ransomware encrypts anything for some reason.

I was using the quarantine every detected thing to make things easier and faster. Need to restore VM and test with "Ask command instead. Not sure what's going on.

Yup, something is wrong with Behavior Shield. It's just not detecting things AVG is detecting with Software Analyzer. Exact same things. My sample of Vipasana ransomware for example. AVG blocked it no problems, avast! BETA with seemingly identical component for behavior analysis and blocking, got through and encrypted files.

So, once Avast 17 is released, what will be the difference between Avast 17 and AVG 17. What are the differentiating features?

I have always been an Avast user, even though I've been running Windows 10 only Windows 10 for awhile now. However, since they now basically share the same core technology, it may be useful to know exactly what is different so that we choose that suits us better.

It may also be a nice idea to make a comparison video between.

Apart from the separate markets that each serve, it looks like Avast will borrow AVG ID Protection (Behavioural Shield) and in return something from Avast for AVG - You can find out more from the AVG Beta threads.

What different markets? They are basically the same. They were both Antivirus companies with a Free(mium?) option to begin with. What it would make sense, at least a little bit further down the line, it would to move everyone to a single brand.

You can ask them, this is from their blog post from September 2016.

"For our consumer customers, the Avast and AVG brands will remain the same, as we know some of you out there prefer one brand over the other. The underlying engine will be stronger than ever for both user groups. Overall, users will get more from our security products, as we will add features from AVG to the Avast product that we haven’t had there before, and vice versa. We are planning on introducing our first new joint antivirus product early next year.

Ultimately, we are expanding our geographic footprint. AVG has traditionally been strong in English speaking markets, including the U.S. and the U.K., while Avast has been strong in non-English speaking markets."

The future of avast! and AVG is that both will share best features of both and bad ones will slowly disappear. They share the core protection engine, though over time protection features may differentiate them apart. They also can't just sack entire userbase of AVG just because they bought their company. That would alienate majority of their userbase and that just doesn't work with any kind of product. Nothing is certain or can be publicly said, but if you think about it, it has always been a natural course of development for acquired program to slowly become assimilated within the base program and over the years, they disappear unless the branding is so recognized they'll decide to keep it in some segments of market. It has always happened with other acquired brands, I don't think it'll be anything different here.
