Foolishly I ran last known good configuration before attempting a password recovery.

Password recovery worked successfully. Ironically there was no password.

However on reboot I only get a black screen and the white mouse cursor.

This is on a Toshiba Laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium.

I have attempted to use Windows Repair without success.

I cannot get into the machine at all as best as I can tell.

How should I proceed?

Lets see if we can bring back your Windows screen. At the black screen with cursor do the following:

  1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete, this should bring up the task manager.
  2. In the Task Manager windows, click on File and then select New Task (Run..)
    [attachment=5934]
  3. In the Create New Task window, type explorer.exe and then click on Ok.
    [attachment=5935]

Let me know the results.

No. That's the first thing I tried with Password Recovery - oddly it was disabled.

Have you tried to do a System Restore? Can you provide FRST log?

  1. Download OTLPENet.exe to your desktop
  2. Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.
  3. Ensure that you have a blank CD in the drive
  4. Double click OTLPENet.exe and this will then open imgburn to burn the file to CD
  5. Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
  6. Wait for the CD to detect your hardware and load the operating system
  7. Your system should now display a Reatogo desktop
Note : as you are running from CD it is not exactly speedy
  8. Insert the USB with FRST
  9. Locate the flash drive with FRST and double click
  10. The tool will start to run.
  11. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  12. Press Scan button.
  13. It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

Many worked ideas here: Windows 7 fails to go into safe mode. Stuck at classpnp.sys: on social.technet.microsoft.com : http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/566cdd43-ce91-4e64-93e0-8d09d8fc1ea0/windows-7-fails-to-go-into-safe-mode-stuck-at-classpnpsys?forum=w7itprogeneral

Examples from website above:

* Try enter to BIOS and change the disk mode from AHCI to IDE, that works for me.

* .. Turned out to be an SDHC card. I suppose any recently added hardware can be suspect.
Update: I inserted the same SDHC card back and it now boots fine. Very confusing now.

* .. Finally removed wireless card and computer boots just fine. Grrr. Must be an update knocked out wireless card drivers...in our case, anyway. Good luck!

* I noticed that when windows would load files and freeze at classpnp.sys, the lights on my keyboard would go out. Then if I pressed a key on the keyboard the keyboard lights would turn back on. I disconnected my USB keyboard and rebooted... problem solved... sort of. I plugged the keyboard back in after a successful reboot. My computer then started running REAL SLOW!!! I have since restored my hard drive to an image that was backed up when I did a clean install.

If it freezes at classpnp.sys, I believe from my experience it will most likely be a hardware issue. Disconnect all hardware that is plugged in any ports not internal to the case and start from there. Then it is process of elimination like removing ram sticks, video cards, PCI cards, extra hard drives etc...

* Had the same problem. Windows 7 startup hung up on classpnp.sys in both normal and safe mode. I don´t know why exactly but resetting the bios via removing the battery fixed it.

* 1. Boot into Windows Recovery Mode
2. Open command prompt
3. Type:

sfc /SCANNOW /OFFBOOTDIR=C:\ /OFFWINDIR=C:\Windows

It ran for a few minutes, and said it had successfully repaired some files.
I rebooted, and successfully rebooted into Windows.

* I faced the same poblem too. tried all the sugestions... nothin worked.
finaly tapped f8 and selected one of the debugging option.... worked!!!

* I had same issue..boot your PC in safe mode using F8 . It will hang at classpnp.sys. Don't give up,do nothing and after a while your pc should restart itself and you should be able to get in with no issues.

Removal of hardware I cannot do - as there is none externally attached.

I was hoping Jack would come back.

I tried all the other methods I could from memtest+ to SCANNOW and everything in between - none worked.

I thought I was going to have success with SCANNOW

It seems there is no system restore ever been used on this laptop :(

The only way in is with that preinstalled environment.

To rule out defective hardware, you should download a Linux ISO file and either burn it to CD or create a bootable USB stick.

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Boot the system and start the Linux Live version you don't have to install it.

If the Linux Live OS works, then all of your hardware components should be alright. If not then you may have defective hardware that needs to be replaced.

Thanks. :D

Does that count?

Yes that counts, and it worked without any problems?

Do you have the laptop recovery CD from Toshiba?
If not most OEM vendors will supply you with a recovery CD, I have had to buy them before some only costs like $20 but other costs a little more.

Without knowing what is causing this problem, it would be best to reinstall Windows from the Toshiba CD.

Don't use just any Windows CD because they may not have the correct drivers needed for this laptop. Many laptops have different drivers that are not available for download, only available on the OEM CD.

Thanks. :D

However before heading down this way - is there any antimalware tools I can run in a Preinstalled Environment?
