Update: The issue was fixed in the Canary builds of Chromium a couple of months ago. I was waiting for it to hit the stable builds to post an update here, and now looks like it has made its way into the stable builds. Probably with Chromium version 102.
Now images look as they should, similar to Firefox in all Chromium browsers
