PRIVACY UPDATES

HTTPS by Default

Starting in version 1.50, Brave will include a new feature called “HTTPS by Default” that improves Web security and privacy by increasing HTTPS use. Brave will upgrade all sites to HTTPS, falling back to HTTP only if the site does not support HTTPS, or in the rare case a site is known to not function correctly when loaded over HTTPS. This feature is the most protective, aggressive default HTTPS policy of any popular browser, and will be available on Android and Desktop versions of the Brave browser to begin with, with iOS coming later.

Previous versions of Brave Browser relied on an HTTPS upgrade list provided by HTTPS Everywhere. Brave checked whether the site was on the provided list when it encountered an HTTP site. If it was, it tried to upgrade the connection to HTTPS. If it was not, HTTP was loaded. The approach worked, but it had two drawbacks that became apparent over time. The EFF, maintainer of the HTTPS Everywhere list, decided to end maintenance for it, which meant that the list was not updated anymore. The second drawback was the list-based approach itself. While it included thousands of sites, it excluded any site that still used HTTP that was not on the list.

Brave switched the approach. It still uses a list, but now only for incompatible sites. These sites have issues when upgraded to HTTPS; the issues can be functional or appearance related. Brave attempts to upgrade all sites not on that list to HTTPS, if they still use HTTP. The list of sites that are incompatible is maintained by Brave on GitHub. The list includes several government and educational sites, but is relatively short. It has 112 entries at the time of writing.

Starting in upcoming version 1.49 (Android and desktop) and already available since version 1.44 for iOS, Brave will hide “open in app” annoyances that appear on many websites. The links are annoying; they prompt you with unrelated questions when you’re trying to browse the Web. Worse, these notices are often privacy harming. Sites know that the “native” versions of their apps aren’t subject to the kinds of privacy-protections that Brave applies to websites, and they’re thus eager to nudge users into the (often) data-gobbling native apps.

Brave will hide “open in app” annoyances by enabling the terrific “Fanboy’s Mobile Notifications List,” maintained in part by folks working at Brave. Users who want to disable this feature can do so by going into settings and disabling “Fanboy’s Mobile Notifications List” list from the list of custom and regional filter lists.

" Brave is changing how the company's web browser is handling Google sign-in requests. The privacy change gives users more control over sign-in prompts in the desktop and Android versions of Brave. "
Starting in Brave Browser 1.51, Brave removes the setting under Social Media Blocking. The developers have created a site permission, called Google Sign-In, which handles the functionality per site.

The default permission is set to ask, which prompts users whenever a site requests to use the Google Sign-In system. As is the case with permissions, users may switch it to allow or block instead. Allow gives all sites permission to use the system, block prevents sites from using it. It is still possible to define exceptions, even if the preference is set to allow or block.

The main privacy gain for users is that the system is no longer an all or nothing approach. Now, they may allow some sites to access the Google Sign-In systems, and prevent all other sites from using it.

Brave Browser 1.50 comes with a relatively large set of new features and improvements. Some of these are specific to certain operating systems, others may have been available in an off-state previously, but are now enabled for all users.

Starting with these, Brave users now find the screenshot option attached to the browser's share menu. A click on the screenshot option of the share menu, which users find attached to the address bar, gives users the option to draw a rectangle around content displayed in the browser to copy it to the clipboard.

The System Settings page, found under brave://settings/system, has a new Power option, but only if the device is having a battery.

Brave users who download content regularly may notice the new download bubble; this moves downloads under a new icon at the top of the Brave interface. Previously, Brave displayed downloads at the bottom of the browser window.

There is also a new HTTPS by Default mode that Brave describes as an intermediate between the browser's HTTPS-Only mode and traditional handling of websites. It basically tries HTTPS first and if that fails, attempts to fall back to HTTP to load the site.

The feature is powered by Brave Shields, which users may configure globally or for individual sites.

Brave users who install the browser anew or for the first time will have all local content blocking scripts enabled by default now. Previously, Brave enabled only one of them. These can be checked and managed by loading brave://settings/shields/filters in the address bar.

Other changes include a new keyboard shortcut, Command-B, to show or hide the sidebar on macOS, and a new Mute Tab option, also on macOS.

Brave Browser users who use the browser's sync feature may enable the experimental flag brave://flags/#brave-sync-send-all-history to add the browsing history to Brave Sync, so that it becomes available on all devices.
