I see FS Protection is at 18.2 beta now

The changes
Release 18.2 beta 1 (4.70.352):
New features:
  • Tamper protection prevents user or external software from disabling SAFE processes, changing the installation folder content or editing relevant values in registry. It is turned off by default and can be enabled in Settings. Please note: help has not been updated yet.
  • People view can now be used to manage people and devices directly in the client user interface instead of logging into My FS Protection in a browser.
Fixed issues:
  • Switch User button is clickable after releasing license (PBL-8859)
  • Hang when logging in through person view (PBL-8852)
  • After logging out and in, the subscription state changes to "expiring soon" if it is continuous (PBL-8848)

Finally some tamper protection

Did they hear us? We need someone to test how it works. I hope the antivirus isn't so easy to turn off now. :)

turned off by default
This means users has to be fully aware of the actual available option and also what it is, and in the end Turn it ON, otherwise it's very useless. Very similar Microsoft still today refuse enable show extension names for known file types. Even though, I would guess F-Secure will eventually enable it by default, because most settings that actually is helpful and important enough is always ON. Using a SUA ( standard user account ) for common/home users is still recommended as it protect and cover even the previous tamper protection " issue " automatic.

I already noticed improved tamper protection in the stable version 18.1, but testing that on nothing else then a admin account and only via the taskmanager is inconclusive. I'll do a correct test this upcoming weekend if I have enough time for it.

I agree, I would keep it disabled.
If you ride your bike carefully and have a quiet city, you can ride without a helmet, I agree, but it still seems strange not to wear a helmet with full awareness when it doesn't bother you at all. Am I missing something here? What reason is there for not turning on self-protection? Reduced performance? There shouldn't be.

You are right. As soon as I get a new PC, I will keep it enabled, which is enabled by default. I thought it would be resource hungry.

I’m curious too. I agree with others that tamper protection isn’t a super valuable feature in this regard. Attempting to mess with antivirus processes is caught by both behavior blockers as well as sandbox analyzers…. It’s pretty much reputation suicide for your file. But having it doesn’t really affect things much in terms of downsides.

I remember one time Sophos pretty much defeated me with their endpoint protection. They require a password from the management server (unique to each endpoint). I had sold the endpoint appliance so I couldn’t get the password and they did a great job of blocking just about every method I could think of for removing it, including safe mode. Ended up spending hours from a bootable WinPE environment doing surgery to deactivate it enough.
