WHAT'S NEW IN KASPERSKY FREE

Kaspersky Free provides the following new features:

  • There is now protection against infection while the operating system is being restarted.

  • Added notification from Web Anti-Virus regarding pages containing adware or legitimate software that can be used by criminals to damage your computer or personal data.

  • Improved speed for certain installation scenarios, the first startup, and the first update of the application.

  • The application now waits a longer amount of time before displaying a notification about outdated databases and application modules when the computer wakes from sleep mode.
MAIN KNOWN ISSUES

  • If the "Always scan encrypted connections" check box is selected, the application will scan encrypted connections even if you have paused protection.

  • If the application was installed in Windows 7 and you upgraded the operating system to Windows 10 but now want to revert back to Windows 7, you are advised to uninstall the application and install it again after reverting back to Windows 7.

  • On certain websites, the application may block the download of additional pages in pop-up windows or frames. To resolve this issue, clear the "Inject script into web traffic to interact with web pages" check box in the network settings of the application.

  • If interactive protection is disabled, tasks for processing threats on your computer from the My Kaspersky portal might not be performed.

  • Certain types of objects from the category “Legitimate software that can be used by criminals to damage your computer or personal data" are not processed from the My Kaspersky portal. These threats must be processed on the computer.

Another contender for Free AV market :)
We'll see how they do and what effect it has to the rest of the market.
Will certainly have the same efficiency of the product paid, Kaspersky would not go into the free market to lose to Avast, Avira and Panda (I do not consider bitdefender free, as it is an outdated version (2016)

Whats the catch? Is it ad supported?
No. Eugene Kaspersky specially told this and I quote
At the same time Kaspersky Free doesn’t come cut with all the usual nonsense like advertising-oriented user-habit tracking and confidentiality infringements – which free AV normally suffers badly from in order to make it financially worthwhile to its manufacturers.

That's a marvelous news for the enthusiasts. Now we have to see what their plans are and how effectively do they sustain their paid and free lines of products.
I think it will be the same as the payment, Kaspersky would not go into the free market to lose to Avast, Avira and Panda (I do not consider bitdefender free, as it is an outdated version (2016)
Sure they wouldn't want that to happen.
The site just says that 'Secure Shopping' and 'Privacy' > 'Identity Protection & more' are missing (among the basic security features). If by Privacy, they mean only the 'browser data collection blocking' and 'webcam access blocking', its still an impressive package.
I see it's missing FW (including Network Attack Blocking), AppControl and such features. Can expect that.

We'll see. From the screenshot provided it looks like it's a purely signature-based solution unless they've integrated some of their dynamic detection capabilities into the product:

Glad to see Kaspersky finally bringing this to Western markets though.

Wow nice surprise from Kaspersky. This will really be a very strong competitor for Avast, Avira and all the other big free ones.
Looking forward to the reviews about this new product.

Extract of article by Eugene Kaspersky: We’ve been working on this release for a good year-and-a-half, with pilot versions in a few regions, research, analysis, tweaks and the rest of it, and out of all that we deduced the following:

  • The free antivirus won’t be competing with our paid-for versions. In our paid-for versions there are many extra features, like: Parental Control, Online Payment Protection, and Secure Connection (VPN), which easily justify the ~$50 for premium protection.
  • There are a lot of users who don’t have the ~$50 to spend on premium protection; therefore, they install traditional freebies (which have more holes than Swiss cheese for malware to slip through) or they even rely on Windows Defender (ye gods!).
  • An increase in the number of installations of Kaspersky Free will positively affect the quality of protection of all users, since the big-data-bases will have more numbers to work with to better hone the machine learning.

From what I've read, Kaspersky Free lacks Application Control and System Watcher. Would that really be missed?
Both are the features that make Kaspersky what it is! Ofcourse those will be missed. From the above details, the best they wish to achieve is name and more and more data for intelligence!

Though it won't have a behavior blocker as compared to some other free AVs out there. The power - definitions, heuristics and cloud detections.

IMO still a good package.
Waiting for some MalwareHub testing :D

Waiting for some MalwareHub testing :D
then, every malware undectected will bypass KFA anyway
to sum up, KFA = signatures + heuristics + cloud + web filter + mail shield + IM shield

not good enough due to a lack of BB

I should be paired with an antiexe or anything similar to that

@mekelek how does this package feel like? Probably the (now) perfect companion for VS+HMPA :D
