Microsoft Edge is getting new features to help users multitask and explore:
Microsoft is now testing three new features – Windows Name, Profile, and Tab Search – in Chromium Edge to help users multitask and explore new webpages. The three new features are currently available in Edge Canary via the experimental flags and command-line script.

The ‘window renaming’ is a new feature for users that want to name browser windows for easier window management and app switching. In Edge Canary and Dev, you can simply right-click on the title bar and select ‘Name window’.

This will open a pop-up menu with a textbox to help you set the custom name for the browser window. Window renaming is also coming to Google Chrome and it could be a nifty addition for users that prefer to reduce clutter on the desktop by organizing each window based on the contents.

For example, you can use this feature to keep your social media tabs and work tabs in separate windows with an appropriate name. It’s also useful if you rely on Windows Timeline for multitasking.

Moving tabs from one profile to another

In Microsoft Edge or any other browser, you can have multiple profiles for different users or your own activities. For example, you can maintain a profile for work and another for personal browsing to keep things separate.

This is a very common practice when users use the same browser to keep things synced.

Microsoft’s new profile switching will allow you to easily move tabs from one profile to another. In Edge Canary, you can now move your tabs from the current profile to other profiles without having to launch another instance of the browser or copy/paste URLs.

To enable this feature, you need to follow these steps:
  • Open Edge flags menu.
  • Search for “Move tabs to profile -window”.
  • Enable the option.
  • Relaunch the browser.
You can simply right-click on a tab and then select the profile of your choice.

Tab Search in Edge

Google recently started working on tab search feature for Chrome and the feature has appeared up in today’s Edge Canary update, but it’s currently hidden behind command line flag.

The company is also rolling out new Smart Copy and scrolling improvements to Chromium Edge in the Canary channel.

Top Feedback Summary for December 1:
Welcome back to the Top Feedback Summary, Insiders! We have a lot of quick updates coming at you this week after our small break, so let’s hop into it.

We’re marking several items as Addressed. The ability to ink on web pages has been around for a little bit, and we are now closing that item out this week. History sync has been available in our Canary and Dev channels for a bit, and we’re now comfortable marking this as addressed. Lastly, users can now use voice search on google.com in our Canary and Dev channels! If you aren’t seeing this option when you head to a site that has voice options, head to edge://flags to turn on the msSpeechRecognition flag. This should also fix issues with websites like Duolingo, which use the same feature. Please let us know if you spot any issues with this!

Today we are updating both Bring the tab preview feature from the current version of Microsoft Edge and Support two-page layout in PDF reader to Planned for January. The tab preview feature is something some Insiders have spotted, and we continue to work on it based on feedback we receive. We also announced that two-page support is now available in our Dev channel, however we are holding on closing it out for a bit as we continue to gather more feedback from users like yourselves. If you would like to give this feature a shot, we encourage you to open a multiple page PDF document and click the Page View button for those layout options.

That’s it for this week’s update. Have you checked out Josh’s change summary post recently? Every week when we update this feedback list, Josh also posts up every change that was made in the build, along with known issues. Head over to his post to get a glimpse of the updates and improvements we’ve made!

Edge 88 is getting these Cool new features:
Microsoft Edge 88 could be a major release or the biggest update since the launch of Edge. The next version of Edge going to release on January 21, 2021, may bring the following features to users.

Generate Passwords
As we said in the Past, Edge has got the ability to suggest strong passwords. The Edge’s built-in Password generator may come in handy when you create a new account on a website. While creating a new account on a website, click on the Password field, and select “suggest Strong Password” and select the Password generated by Edge or use the refresh option, or the browser to offer another password.

Copy and Edit Passwords
Edge allows to copy and edit saved Passwords in the browser.
To edit a Password stored in Edge
  • Visit edge://settings/Passwords
  • Under Saved Passwords
  • Click on the three-dot icon and select “Copy password” or “Edit” and enter the Windows OS password when prompted.
Cookies and Site permissions Settings redesign
Cookies and site Permissions Settings page has been revamped. It now displays settings in a card-based view. The redesign allows managing cookies and navigating to settings much easier than before, and the design looks slick and neat.

New History menu
History menu follows the Favorites UI revamp, lets you access recently closed sites on the fly. The History flyout also lists all History entries and Tab from other devices.

Other new features and interesting additions:
At the time of writing, all these features are available in dev versions of Edge

Microsoft Edge Canary now supports grouping tabs:
Testers of Microsoft Edge Canary can now play around with several tab grouping features.

What you need to know
  • Microsoft Edge Canary users can now group tabs together in the browser.
  • Grouped tabs can be collapsed and automatically frozen when collapsed.
  • You need to go through edge://flags to enable the features.
Keeping track of all your tabs on Microsoft Edge can be a bit tricky. If you have many tabs open at once, the top of your browser gets crowded, and it can be hard to find the exact tab you need. A new set of features that's in testing on Microsoft Edge Canary makes it easier to organize your tabs. Within the edge://flags menu, there are four features that you can now enable related to grouping tabs (via Techdows).

The features are available in build 89.0.722.0 of Microsoft Edge Canary. The four optional features are:
  • Tab Groups
  • Tab Groups Collapse
  • Tab Groups Auto Create
  • Tab Groups Collapse Freezing
Each of these features can be enabled or disabled independently.

To create a tab group, you just need to right-click on a tab and select Add tab to a new group. You can then name the tab group and select which color you'd like its icon to be.

You can then collapse or expand a group of tabs by clicking on it. The interface feels quite natural and makes it easier to organize tabs. The option to have collapsed tabs freeze can also quickly free up system resources.

You can use tab groups on Microsoft Edge Canary's normal horizontal tab layout or the browser's vertical tab layout. Between vertical tabs, tab groups, and Alt+Tab being able to navigate to specific browser tabs, it's become much easier to navigate the web on Microsoft Edge.

Added features:
  • Added the ability to run an on-demand scan for leaked passwords from the Passwords Settings page.
  • Added a website permission to Cookies and Site Data for pre-loading websites.
  • Added an option to have downloaded PDFs open in the default PDF reader instead of Edge.
  • Added keyboard shortcut information to the Share, Copy, and Paste Settings page.
  • Enabled work from Chromium to reduce battery usage by background tabs.

As always, your bug finding and feedback filing is what makes this all possible!
Top Feedback Summary for December 8:
Welcome back to the Top Feedback Summary, Insiders! We’re adding on a couple of new things this week. We also wanted to take this time to remind everyone that we will be taking a holiday break this month. The last two weeks of December will not have any updates to this list (or our Dev channel). We’ll remind you all next week!

Last week, we closed out the item about being able to use voice search on google.com, and we wanted to provide more clear instructions and clarify the availability for this feature. This is currently available to users in our Canary and Dev channels for Windows only. If you would like to use this feature and aren’t able to, we encourage you to try running Edge using this command line in Command prompt: msedge.exe --enable-features=msSpeechRecognition. We are slowly rolling this out to all users across all platforms (same with history sync) and wanted to ensure that was clearly laid out for everyone.

We are excited to bring two new things to you all this week! One is an update to PDFs, Users can get back to where they left off in PDF documents. This item is Planned, however we don’t have a time frame on when users will see this addition to the PDF reader just yet. The next item on the list is something we have seen frequently requested across social media, Allow users to turn off the “Disable developer mode extensions” notification. The team currently has this Under Review, and we will provide more information about this item once the review is completed.

That’s all for this week. We’ll see you all next week for our final 2020 update on your top feedback!

Edge Canary brings a new accent color option for themes, feature currently hidden:
The latest Edge Canary build is adding a new personalization feature that lets users apply custom accent colors to the browser theme. This feature is currently hidden under an experimental flag (spotted by HotCakeX in the Edge Insider forums) and must be enabled in order to show up in the settings.

Heading to edge://flags and enabling the ‘edge-color-theme-picker’ flag adds an ‘Accent color’ option in the Appearance section in Settings. The option lets users select from 15 available colors. These accent colors apply to the title bar, toolbar, and the new tab page, irrespective of whether the browser is set to dark or light themes. However, the feature still has some rough edges since it is still in the early development states.

The accent color option differs from the third-party themes that can be downloaded from the Edge Add-ons store or other stores. While the toolbar icons also adapt to the accent colors to match the theme and provide sufficient contrast, the context menus still adhere to the light/dark browser themes and do not change depending on the accent color selected. The custom colors can be simply disabled via the ‘Remove’ option right below the palette.

The feature can be enabled in Edge Canary build 89.0.731.0 or newer. Since it has just shown up in Canary releases and is still hidden under an experimental flag, it will be a while till it shows up in regular builds and eventually in the stable channel.

Dev channel update to 89.0.731.0 is live:
Hello Insiders! Today we’re releasing build 89.0.731.0 to the Dev channel. This will be our last scheduled release to Dev, Beta, and Stable for the year, although we may publish small fixes if necessary, and Canary will continue through the holidays. For more details, see https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/discussions/a-few-updates-from-the-microsoft-edge-team/m-p/19.... We’ve got lots of exciting things to talk about too!
As for what’s new in the product:

Added features:
  • Added an indicator to show when a tab has been muted because the underlying system audio has been muted.
  • Added an option to Settings to disable downloading Edge updates over metered connections. Note that this is currently only available on Windows 10.
  • Added a Setting to disable the F12 entry point to the Dev Tools.
  • Added support for forcing popup windows into new tabs instead in Kiosk mode.
  • Enabled support for the management policies from Chromium to Enable Basic Auth Over HTTP, and that Target Blank Implies No Opener.
Top Feedback Summary for December 15:
Greetings, Insiders! This is the last major update we’re doing for the year of 2020! We will be back with your top feedback updates the first week of January 2021. Let’s jump in to the details for this week’s update.

First up, we have two items moving to Planned for January. Enable customers to pin sites to Start Menu in Windows we expect to be rolled out to everyone in all channels in January, however some users in our Dev and Canary channels should be able to use this functionality now. Users can also expect to see Edge should respect the default PDF viewer addressed in January.

As we continuously review the items that are on this list, we sometimes need to make adjustments. This is the case with Edge launches with previous session’s tabs when “On startup” setting is set to “Open a new tab”; after a careful evaluation, the team has decided to mark this item as Not Planned. This experience is a bug we are working with partners to resolve, however because incoming feedback we’ve received has significantly dropped and priorities have been adjusted, we wanted to be transparent with our status on this. If anything changes again as we evaluate the feedback you all are sending in, we will provide another status update.

That’s all for this week and the year of 2020! We will see you all in 2021. From the Microsoft Edge team, we hope you have a safe and happy holiday season, and a happy new year!

Microsoft Edge will now warn you when you close multiple tabs:
When Microsoft made a shift to the Chromium framework, the Edge team promised to bring all the features of Legacy Edge to the new Chromium Edge browser. While the company did deliver on that promise, it missed the option that warned users when they try closing multiple tabs.

Now, Microsoft Edge has updated its Canary branch to add support for the same. The feature is currently hidden behind a flag and can be enabled by searching for “Ask before closing multiple tabs” in edge://flags (via Techdows). Once found, you will need to enable the feature and relaunch the web browser.

You will then need to follow the steps below to enable the feature:
  • Open Microsoft Edge Canary click on the three dots on the top right corner
  • Navigate to Settings > Appearance
  • Enable the “Ask before Closing multiple tabs” option
Once done, Microsoft Edge will warn you when you are trying to close multiple tabs. You can then either click on "Close All" to close all the tabs or click "Cancel". If you no longer want to get the pop-up warning then you can either select "Don't ask me again" or follow the aforementioned steps to toggle off the option.

The feature is currently available on Microsoft Edge Canary version 89 which is expected to hit the stable channel in March 2021.

Top Feedback Summary for January 6:
Welcome back, Insiders, and happy new year! We have a really small update for you this week, so let’s hop right into those details!

We’re only updating a couple of items from December today. Both Provide an option to prevent auto-play of video and audio when you open a website and Ask users if they want to close all tabs when they close a browser window are moving from Planned for December to Planned for February. We hope to have more information to share around these soon!

One thing that we consider a quality area from your feedback is bringing more extensions to our Add-ons store. The team has been hard at work ensuring all your favorite extensions are on the Microsoft Edge Add-ons website. If you haven’t checked it out in a while, head to the Trending Extensions page to see if you can find your next favorite extension for your browsing needs.

Microsoft Edge to get a new toolbar feature for managing downloads:
Microsoft is testing a new toolbar experience for Microsoft Edge that will allow users to access important browser pages instantly without navigating to settings.

Browser toolbar provides easy access to common features, such as your extensions and the menu. In Microsoft Edge, the toolbar is easy to customize and you can use it to capture screenshots of the website, browse your bookmarks, and share webpages via Windows Share UI.

Microsoft has been testing a new toolbar experience that will allow users to access the following pages:
  • Favourites.
  • History.
  • Collections.
You can access these pages directly from the toolbar and the new UI is already available for history, favourites, and collections in Microsoft Edge Canary v89.

Edge-downloads-flyout-UI.jpg

It appears that the new UI will soon be coming to ‘Downloads’ too. This will allow you to manage and search your downloads without having to navigate to Edge’s dedicated download page.

As you see in the above screenshot, Microsoft Edge’s downloads menu now uses a new flyout layout and it can be accessed anytime while browsing. The flyout menu also makes it possible to clear the downloads history without having to navigate to Edge’s dedicated page.

Edge’s toolbar is easy to customize, which means that you can remove the link by heading to Settings > Appearance. Or you can also switch back to the old UI by selecting “hide from toolbar” option in the context menu.

The new toolbar design is currently rolling out to select testers in the Microsoft Edge Canary builds and it will be released to everyone later this year.

In addition to toolbar improvements, Microsoft is believed to be working on a new tab preview feature, which could be unveiled in January, according to the roadmap. Likewise, the tech giant is also restoring a PDF search tool and adding back support for Windows Inking.

Dev channel update to 89.0.760.0 is live:
Hello insiders! Today we’re releasing build 89.0.760.0 to the Dev channel. It’s a light week this week, but here’s everything we’ve got to talk about:

Added features:
  • Enabled Password Monitor on Mac.
  • Added Edge Update policies to edge://policy/.
  • Enabled support for the Browsing Data Lifetime management policy from Chromium.
  • Added a management policy to Define Preferred Languages. Note that updates to documentation or administrative templates may not be available yet.
Top Feedback Summary for January 12:
Greetings, Insiders! We have such a quiet week with no changes, so this will be a brief update. All the statuses on this page are still accurate, though some may appear out of date. We are taking this time to remind everyone of our status definitions for this list.

Our Planned for… status is designed to show when Insiders can expect to see that particular feature improvement or change in our Canary channel but doesn’t necessarily mean that’s the month that we will mark it as Addressed. Once we know that an item on this list is in our Dev channel, we work hard to provide the most accurate update we can regarding that item. Sometimes that’s marking things as Addressed, and sometimes that means giving an update on a flag or command line Insiders can use to enable a feature.

We understand that there have been items on this list longer than expected, and we massively appreciate everyone’s patience as we continue to iterate and adjust based on priorities and ensuring we are doing things right. Is there something that isn’t on this list that you feel should be? The best way to let us know is by filing feedback! Head to the menu > Help and feedback > Send feedback to detail what you think we should be working on.

Thanks again for your continued support as a Microsoft Edge Insider! We will see you next week for our next update.

Chrome Web browser offers a Voice typing option on Google Docs. The feature is not available for Google service in Edge browser.

But Microsoft Edge Canary is now showing the ‘Voice typing’ option in a text box context menu, which when selected or when you press Win +H, the Dictation feature of Windows 10 starts and asks to use voice to start typing.

MS says it will be released in the week of 01-21-2021.
I asked an American friend and he said:
"Definition of "The Week Of" means that it can happen anytime during those seven days. Maybe the release will be gradual, a little bit each of those seven days of that week."
