Microsoft is working on improving the "Find on Page" feature in its browser. The current stable version has a simple search that allows finding matching characters, words, and phrases only. Future updates will provide more advanced search features, such as finding related words, match cases, whole words, and diacritics.

The updated "Find on Page" feature is currently available for some testers in the Canary channel with the options you can toggle on or off after pressing Ctrl + F or selecting the Find on Page feature from the main menu. As of now, additional options include the following:
  • Include related matches - the browser will highlight words and phrases that might be related or similar to your request.
  • Match case - enables case-sensitive search, for example, finding a specific upper-cased word.
  • Match whole world - this option finds only words and omits parts of words that match your search request.
  • Match diacritics - lets you find only accented characters. This option will pair nicely with the new Quick Accent tool in PowerToys.

Microsoft is currently testing a new Touch mode for the Edge browser with the purpose of making the browser more optimized for touch devices such as Microsoft Surface Pro. While some parts of the Edge interface are already well-optimized for touch devices, this is for the first time we are seeing a dedicated UI designed to work on touch devices. Edge users have been asking for improved touchscreen support since the demise of Edge Legacy.

When you turn on the Touch mode, all browser elements become slightly bigger. As per the feature description, the size of browser elements like buttons and tabs is increased when you turn it on. If you are using Edge on a convertible PC, you can select the "Auto" option from the Touch mode drop-down menu. And doing so will make Edge recognize whether or not you are using Windows with touch and offer you a layout accordingly.

Microsoft is currently testing the feature in the Edge Canary channel. But we have not been able to get access to it just yet, meaning that it could be rolling out to select users for now. If you happen to be one of the lucky ones, you can make Edge more touch-optimized by navigating to Settings> Appearance> Touch.

According to a post on the official Tech Community forums, the option to make Edge open favorites in a new tab is rolling out first to Dev and Canary users. It is a part of a controlled feature rollout, which means it might arrive on your device in a couple of days. You can check if your Edge Dev or Canary allows opening favorites in a new tab by navigating to Settings > Appearance.

Microsoft Edge developers are also busy finishing other long-anticipated features for the browser. The software giant says users will soon get the option to close tabs with a double-click and search in Collections.

Top Feedback Summary for November 2022
Hello, Insiders! We appreciate your patience between updates for this summary. To break out of the usual royal tense a little, I suffered a back injury shortly after the last update to this list, which caused severe delays to it being updated. As you can see, we’re here to give you one final update to this list for 2022!

We’re excited to share that Add option to always open favorites in new tab is Addressed as of today in both our Canary and Dev channels! We’re still rolling this out, so if you don’t see it keep an eye out for it. The team is still working on finalizing search in Collections and double-clicking to close tabs. Some of you may already see these features, however we’re not quite ready to close these out on this list. We hope to have more updates on these two soon!

That’s it for this update! We’re taking a short release break for the holidays here in the United States. Major updates to Stable and Beta channels will resume in early January. Do you have a suggestion that you think the team should consider? Head over to the Edge Feedback portal to leave your suggestion and have likeminded people join in on the conversation. Have something you think might be more of a bug? You can send it to us directly through the in-app feedback tool by heading to the menu > Help and feedback > Send feedback and include diagnostics. Detailing exactly what you see will ensure that the team understands the issue at hand, and if you include your email address it offers you the ability to receive email updates whenever we take action on your item.

Until our next update, happy holidays wherever you are and a happy new year, Insiders! Talk to you in the new year!

Edge Dev Channel Version 110.0.1556.0 is now available with several new features for the Edge Sidebar and a traditionally massive list of bugfixes, minor improvements, and other changes.

Updates for the recently introduced Sidebar feature are the highlight of the latest release. You can now resize the Sidebar, enable or disable push notifications, mute and unmute websites, and access search.

Microsoft has also noted that this is the last feature update for the browser in the Dev Channel in 2022. The company will continue pushing weekly updates once the holiday season is over.

Still no ability to add all bookmarks, and no open/close on hover. It's no match for Brave's which does both, although I rarely use Brave, having moved to FF as my primary.

Microsoft Edge developers are back from the holiday season with a new weekly update for users testing the browser in the Dev Channel. As usual, the release brings minor changes, bugfixes, and improvements. Android users also received an improved ad-blocker and the ability to change the wallpaper on the home page.

However, the latest Edge Dev update also proves that using a preview channel as your primary browser is not the best idea. There are multiple reports of the browser crashing on a loop, and Microsoft has already confirmed the issue, promising to release a necessary fix as soon as possible.

Microsoft finally has a fix for Edge's oversized menus
Microsoft's feature-packed browser each month gets new capabilities and features with one weird side effect: they no longer fit inside the browser's menu. It has become so big that users have to scroll it. Edge's "plus-sized" menus are a popular complaint from frustrated customers, and Microsoft finally has a solution.

The latest Edge Canary update attempts to shrink its massive menu to more reasonable sizes by moving less popular and unnecessary tools to a submenu. The already existing "More tools" option will soon host more features, such as Read Aloud, Performance, Battery, Share, and more.

Interestingly, the Games section appears too important to move to the submenu, so it sits higher than built-in accessibility and resource-optimizing utilities that now require more clicks to access. However, it is too early to dunk on Microsoft for poor priorities—the updated menu is available only to some Edge Canary users, so future updates may tweak the menu more and reposition various tools and options. If you test pre-release Edge updates, send your feedback to Microsoft to help improve the browser.

Microsoft is working on adding mouse gestures to Edge
It appears that Microsoft has changed its mind regarding implementing mouse gestures in its browser. A recent update to the Edge policies documentation reveals the company's plan to add mouse gestures in Edge 112 and onward. The feature has yet to arrive for testing in the preview channels, but the policy description already provides a brief explanation of what is to come.
Here is how Microsoft describes the feature in the documentation:
This feature provides an easy way for users to complete tasks like scroll forward or backward, open new tab, refresh page, etc. They can finish a task by pressing and holding the mouse right button to draw certain patterns on a webpage, instead of clicking the buttons or using keyboard shortcuts.

Microsoft has announced a new feature for its browser, aiming at giving Edge users a better video viewing experience. Video Super Resolution (VSR) is a built-in upscaler that uses AI technology from Microsoft Research to enhance low-quality videos and deliver a more enjoyable experience with sharper visuals. According to Microsoft, one out of three videos in Edge is played at 480p or lower, so the new tech will come in handy for many users suffering from low network bandwidth or poor video quality.
Microsoft says the new video upscaler is now rolling out to 50% of users in the Canary Channel. However, you can enable Edge's new Video Super Resolution feature by toggling on the edge://flags/#edge-video-super-resolution flag.

Several weeks ago, we reported a new policy for Microsoft Edge describing upcoming mouse gestures, a feature that lets you perform various tasks by making gestures with your mouse. Gestures are a popular capability available in many browsers, and now they are coming to Microsoft Edge. A newly published screenshot reveals what the feature will look like.

The screenshot was published on a Chinese website (via), showing about fourteen different-shaped gestures. Each gesture can be customized to your liking and assigned a specific action. For example, close the current tab by holding the right-click button and making an L-shaped gesture.
"This feature provides an easy way for users to complete tasks like scroll forward or backward, open new tab, refresh page, etc. They can finish a task by pressing and holding the mouse right button to draw certain patterns on a webpage, instead of clicking the buttons or using keyboard shortcuts."

According to the source, mouse gestures are currently available to some Edge testers in the Dev Channel. Therefore, insiders can expect the company to announce the much-anticipated feature soon.
