The days of Microsoft having a simple and easy-to-understand Windows feature update system are gone. What was initially promised to be one update per year turned into a seemingly random flow of new features possibly arriving inside the monthly cumulative updates called "Moments", they usually filter down from the Windows Insider Dev or Beta channel W indows 11 Previews, but even features that first arrive in Dev do not always follow the path down through Beta, and Release Preview. Long story short, it's not really clear how "Moments" come about and are decided.

The features Microsoft released for the Windows 11 2022 Update in November are your "Moment 1" update, "Moment 2" should arrive in February or March 2023, and now we have a new report spilling the beans on the upcoming "Moment 3" update.

According to @_h0x0d_, a reliable source of Microsoft leaks, the company plans to release the "Moment 3" update or "next Windows Continuous Innovations" in May 2023. References to "Moment 3" have already been spotted in the recent Windows 11 preview builds.

There are no official confirmations from Microsoft or definitive lists of new features that "Moment 3" could bring. The company has yet to disclose what users will get in the "Moment 2" update, although some of its parts and features are already available in the stable version of Windows 11 22H2.

While we wait for Microsoft to officially announce upcoming updates for Windows 11, check out our recent coverage showing five neat features coming soon to Windows 11 and their five not-so-great counterparts.

Indeed, missed moments, broken moments, you name it. I think the 'plan' with Moments is mainly based on indecision and having too many cooks stirring too many pots, mostly with bad recipes. But what would we expect?
microsoft has a lot of internal operational problems (disorganized, dysfunction), one of which is different departments do not talk to each other, another is employee turnover
these problems are not uncommon for a company that size, especially in tech companies

Microsoft apparently begins work on Windows 11 Moment 3 release later in 2023

Back in November, Microsoft started enabling its upcoming Windows 11 Moment 3 update for the first time. Back then, we found traces of the upcoming feature update in Dev Channel builds. It was also around this same time that Microsoft moved into the Zinc development semester. Internal test IDs revealed that the Redmond giant had begun enabling Moment 3, and even Moment 4, features in the Dev channel.

Up until now, anything and everything around Moment 3 revolved around the Dev Channel. However, things are now starting to spill over to the Beta Channel as well, indicating that future Moment 3 features are now moving in slightly closer to the general availability. Twitter user and Windows enthusiast Xeno noticed mentions of future Beta channel builds 23141 and 23145 in the recent Beta channel releases. They speculate that the new build numbers are indicative of Windows 11 Moment 3. The mentions were found in the Microsoft Symbol Server which may be hinting at the ongoing debugging and development efforts by the company.

Features of the third Windows 11 Moments update

Live Captions support is now available for additional languages: Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), French (France, Canada), German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese (Brazil, Portugal), Spanish, Danish, English (Ireland, other English dialects), Korean. It was available for United States English systems only previously.

Live Captions display captions for video playing on Windows 11. It is a system-wide feature, unlike captions functionality built-into browsers. Use the keyboard shortcut Windows-Ctrl-L to start using it.

Voice Access commands are supported for additional English dialects: English (United Kingdom), English (India), English (New Zealand), English (Canada), English (Australia). The in-app voice command help page shows descriptions and examples now, making it more accessible.

Voice access needs to be enabled under Settings > Accessibility > Speech > Voice Access. Windows 11 downloads a speech model when the feature is turned on for the first time. The update adds new voice commands for text selections and editing to Windows 11:
  1. Select from [text 1] to [text 2]
  2. Delete all.
  3. Bold that, underline that, or italicize that.

Smaller changes:
  • A VPN status icon is displayed in the System tray area when the device is "connected to a recognized VPN profile".
  • Seconds may be displayed in the clock on the taskbar. This needs to be enabled under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar. Microsoft warns that this may increase power usage and that some devices may not be able to enable the power saving mode.
  • Copy two-factor authentication codes. When 2fa codes are displayed as notification toasts by apps, Windows 11 displays a copy button to quickly copy the code to the Clipboard. Only available for English.
  • Access Key shortcuts in File Explorer. These one-key shortcuts allow users to run commands quickly with just a single tap on a key.
  • Multi-kiosk mode is now supported. This adds the option to set environments for different users on the device. Kiosk mode allows admins to restrict access to certain apps on the device and to block certain functionality. Admins may check the help files for information on the feature.
  • Task Manager option to create a live kernel memory dump. It includes a "consistent snapshot of kernel memory" and optionally other memory types, and saves these to a dump file. To use the feature, switch to the Details tab in Task Manager, right-click on the System process and select Create live kernel memory dump file. The files are saved to %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows\TaskManager\LiveKernelDumps.
  • New Touch keyboard control options. Founder under Settings > Time & language > Typing > Touch keyboard, Windows users have now three options: never, when no keyboard attached, or always. These define if and when a touch keyboard is displayed.
  • Content Adaptive Brightness Control (CABC). Enabled for laptops and 2-in-1 devices, and found under Settings > System > Display > Brightness & color. The available options are Off, Always and On Battery only. Devices need to support CABC.
  • New USB4 hubs and devices Settings page. Found under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > USB > USB4 Hubs and Devices.
  • New Presence Sensing privacy Setting. Found under Settings > Privacy & security > Presence sensing. Read more about Presence Sensing here.
  • Search performance is improved in Settings.
  • Print Screen key behavior is changed. Instead of copying the screen to the Clipboard, a tap on the key will open the Snipping Tool by default. The old print key functionality can be restored in the Settings.
  • Cloud Suggestions and integrated Search suggestions improved for Simplified Chinese.
  • Show 20 most recent tabs when using Alt-Tab. Alt-Tab may display up to 2 most recent tabs when invoked. The feature is found under System > Multitasking > Show tabs from apps when snapping or pressing Alt-Tab.
  • Accounts displaying OneDrive information.

Microsoft announces Windows 11 "Moment 3" update, coming May 24, 2023
The time has arrived for Windows 11 users to prepare to download the latest feature drop for the operating system. After months of testing in the Windows Insider program, Windows 11 "Moment 3" update is ready for its public release on May 24, 2023.

The latest feature update for Windows 11 has no official name (so much for hating silly names, such as "Fall Creators Update"), so enthusiasts call it "Moment 3," according to the leaked story about Microsoft changing its approach to servicing its operating system. The release is not the biggest one we have seen, but it still packs a few excellent changes and new features. Here are the highlights:
  • Taskbar and notification improvements: new VPN indicator and a button for copying 2FA codes from notifications.
  • Live Kernel Memory Dump in Task Manager.
  • Content Adaptive Brightness Control or (CABC) improvements to make your laptop or tablet last longer.
  • Multitasking improvements that now let you display more Edge tabs when you press Alt + Tab.
  • Changes for one of the oldest methods of taking screenshots. Intriguing!
  • Accessibility Improvements to make the OS more convenient for people with physical limitations.
  • Multiple fixes and minor changes across the operating system.
We have already published our comprehensive Windows 11 "Moment 3" Update review, which you can check out here. Note that the update will release as optional, so you will have to go to Settings > Windows Update, check for available updates, and then install the release. Microsoft will push the "Moment 3" update to all customers on June 13, 2023, or the next Patch Tuesday. You can also check out the official announcement post detailing new features coming tomorrow to a Windows 11 PC near you.

In case you missed it, Microsoft also announced a few exciting features coming soon to Windows 11. Version 23H2, which is due to arrive in the second half of the year, will bring native RGB controls, an ungrouped taskbar with labels (yay), improved app backup and restore, and many more. Catch up with the rest of Build 2023 announcements here.

I am wondering, with all these new features in this new update, can any of them be turned off or disabled? Has anyone who got the update tried that yet? Thanks.

C.H.
It is a small update, but things like "Content Adaptive Brightness Control" can be disabled (done that).
