Work on the next major release of the open source email client Thunderbird is in full swing. The developers have now published a preview of the planned Calendar changes in the new major release.

Thunderbird Supernova, that is the name of the next major version of the email client, will reinvent the email client according to the development team. While that is often cause for concern for long-standing users of a software, it appears that this should be less of a concern for Thunderbird users.

The new version features a modernized interface, but also features that many existing users found missing in the current version. Besides the ability to sync data between different Thunderbird installations, courtesy of Firefox Sync, it is the Android version that needs to be mentioned specifically. Thunderbird is a desktop only email client at the time, which means that users need to use a different app on their mobile devices.

The built-in calendar is getting a new design as well. The team highlighted some of the changes scheduled for the Supernova release in a new blog post on the official Thunderbird website.

The team notes that the highlighted design has been made to look busy on purpose, that there will be options to change the density, that many visual changes will be customizable, and that everything should be considered in development at this point.

The open source Thunderbird email client includes powerful email filtering functionality. Thunderbird users have the following options at their disposal in regards to highlighting important emails in the email client:
  • Star messages -- this adds a yellow star icon in email listings.
  • Set high priorities for emails -- highlights emails with the selected priority, e.g., high or highest. The priority column is not displayed by default.
  • Add tags to emails -- Tags color code emails in the email listings and are displayed in the email header.
  • Move messages to a specific folder -- moves emails to a selected folder automatically.

Thunderbird 102.7.0 – no auto-release due to issues with Microsoft 365
OAuth2 issues with MS 365

Unresolved is the bug that OAuth2 authentication does not work for Microsoft 365 Enterprise accounts (see also). Therefore, Thunderbird will not automatically update to 102.7.0 as this is a critical authentication issue with Microsoft 365 Business accounts. Affected users should not update until Thunderbird 102.7.1 is released with a fix. Opening the "About Mozilla Thunderbird" dialogue allows an update to 102.7.0.

The Thunderbird email client from Firefox developer Mozilla continues to have a strong fan following. However, the software hasn't received a UI refresh for some time. That will change later this summer, according to a post today on the official Thunderbird blog.

Since early 2020, development of Thunderbird has been conducted by MZLA Technologies, which is a subsidary of Mozilla. A small but growing number of paid developers has been maintaining and updating the email client for the past three years. The donations from users have helped keep the lights on. Now it looks like the team is ready to make a major leap forward in Thunderbird's development.

One of the team's big goals is to refresh the email client's user interface so it looks as good as modern email software. The blog post stated:
A UI that looks and feels modern is getting initially implemented with version 115 in July, aiming at offering a simple and clean interface for “new” users, as well as the implementation of more customizable options with a flexible and adaptable interface to allow veteran users to maintain that familiarity they love.

Thunderbird 102.9.0 addresses 6 different security issues in the email program. The security issues have severity ratings of high and moderate, the aggregated rating is high.

Thunderbird's development team notes that many of the security issues "cannot be exploited through email in the Thunderbird product" because scripting is disabled when reading email. Thunderbird is based on Firefox code, and it inherits some of the vulnerabilities affecting Firefox because of that.
  • CVE-2023-25751: Incorrect code generation during JIT compilation
  • CVE-2023-28164: URL being dragged from a removed cross-origin iframe into the same tab triggered navigation
  • CVE-2023-28162: Invalid downcast in Worklets
  • CVE-2023-25752: Potential out-of-bounds when accessing throttled streams
  • CVE-2023-28163: Windows Save As dialog resolved environment variables
  • CVE-2023-28176: Memory safety bugs fixed in Thunderbird 102.9
Information about each of the vulnerabilities is provided on the Security Advisories website.
