New Update ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors available for Windows, Linux and macOS

The Document Foundation (TDF) has been throwing some absolute daggers at Microsoft lately. It has actively been accusing the Windows maker of using absurdly complex XML schemas to trap users and even urged customers to abandon Windows 10 for Linux last year.

Now, it has shifted its crosshairs to a supposed ally, OnlyOffice, explicitly labeling the rival productivity suite as "fake open-source." According to TDF, OnlyOffice partners with Microsoft to enforce vendor lock-in by defaulting to Microsoft file formats instead of championing open standards.

Since a few weeks I am having problems opening documents (especially powerpoints) created with latest Microsoft Office using LibreOffice. When I have a word document open and open such a latest powerpoint, the slides only show partially (e.g. header and background are visible, but pictures and bullets won't show).

Thanks @Parkinsond for posting above Neowin link. I tried only office and it seems that OnlyOffice on Linux does not has this annoying issues with latest M$ Office formats. I can open three powerpoints and a few word documents without issue. Although I like the super quick lanch of LibreOffice in Linux Mint (Open Office is a lot slower to open documents), I just have changed the default from LibreOffice to OnlyOffice. I will keep LibreOffice installed and check back from time to time, but I am forced to switched to the much slower OnlyOffice otherwise I can't use the latest documents from work (I am retired but still teaching my old trade on University for fun).

If OnlyOffice is a native installer (not a web wrapper), it will be the best alternative for MS Office.

I forgot about an annoyance of OnlyOffice running in flatpak (sandbox), sometimes refuses to save because of access rights and then you have to save it with a different. name. It is a known issue. To overcome that flatpak permission is set to allow write access to ALL SYSTEM FILES :-(


It is running okay with network, inter process communications, pulse-audio server, all system files removed and you need to manually add write access to xdg-documents and flatpak folder (/home/YOUR NAME/.var/app/org.onlyoffice.desktopeditors/)
