The Art of Self Defense | MOVIE REVIEW:

My Thoughts

The trailer caught my attention as something different.

It looked like a strange, flat dark comedy that could be better than expected.

So, I decided to watch this movie when I got a chance.

My brother GC watched it with me.

This movie is unique.

It somewhat reminds me of a combination of the movies Napoleon Dynamite, Cuck, and a Wes Anderson movie.

The trailer and the movie are pretty similar, and so the trailer was not misleading.

This movie has a flat comedic style.

It is not trying to be overtly funny.

The situations, delivery, and strangeness make some things funny that normally would not be, especially since some things are dark.

This movie has some surprises.

It has better writing than you would think.

It did not waste much time.

Furthermore, it was better than you would expect.

This movie is a bit eccentric and can be a bit hard to describe.

It is a type of movie that you do not see that often.

It is worth watching for something different.

I was surprised by some of the use of combat and martial arts.

It was written in a way that included foreshadowing, yet still had surprises.

Additionally, it managed to incorporate comedy while still portraying serious things uniquely.

I also like how the movie ends with an answer to the art of self-defense.

This movie is actually pretty clever.

We need more movies like this.

This is a mild one compared to the other ones but it also has some funny moments.

Giving this one a go tonight.

I wanted to see this in movie theater a few weeks ago, but then it was gone! Gets a good metascore too. Streaming I see it's on Prime but +$19.95. I already pay too much for streaming to pay an additional $19.95. I figure in a few more weeks it will be no extra cost somewhere...

Same, I wanted to see it, but it was going to play too soon for me to catch it after work (I have to drive to another city since I live in a small city).

Then it was gone before I got a chance to see it for my birthday.

So I will be watching it this weekend with one of my brothers.

One of my brothers and I watched it in three chunks.

30 minutes on Saturday, until the halfway mark early Sunday, and then we finished it later that Sunday.

That may have an impact on the score.

I would rate it a 3.5 out of 5 personally, a 3 - 3.5 out of 5 for a general audience, and maybe 3.5 - 4 out of 5 for fans of religious horror.

I would recommend that people watch it, but I am a cheapskate.

So I probably would not recommend it at that price.

Wait for a sale and / or request that your public library get a copy.
