  • It’ll allow WhatsApp users in close proximity to share files with each other.
  • It looks like file-sharing using the new “People nearby” option in WhatsApp will be end-to-end encrypted.

WhatsApp has started rolling out the ability to quickly forward or rewind a video in its instant messaging app. You can double tap on the right or left side of the screen to quickly move forward or backward in a video by 10 seconds.

The feature, which has been under testing for a while now, works similarly to how you can forward or rewind a video in streaming apps like Netflix and YouTube. The ability to forward/rewind a video is now shipped with WhatsApp's latest update for iOS available on the App Store.

WhatsApp has started rolling out its Favorites feature to some testers running WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.7.18, WABetaInfo reports, adding the update is available through the Google Play Beta Program.

As the name suggests, the feature lets you mark important contacts and groups as favorites within the Calls tab. These contacts are easily accessible in a separate section in the Calls tab. This new addition might save some valuable time as you don't need to scroll down to find people's names in the call log or type it in the Contact list.

WhatsApp appears to be working on a picture-in-picture mode for videos to enhance the video-watching experience on the instant messaging app. WABetaInfo discovered the in development feature in WhatsApp beta for iOS version 24.6.10.74.

A screenshot suggests that the picture-in-picture mode in WhatsApp will let you watch videos in a small pop-up window while navigating through parts of the app. WhatsApp already has picture-in-picture mode you can use during video calls to send messages, reply to other users, or navigate through the app.

Find Messages Faster with Chat Filters

Opening WhatsApp and finding the right conversation should feel quick, seamless, and simple. As people increasingly do more on WhatsApp, it’s more important than ever before to be able to get to your messages fast. That’s why today we’re launching new Chat Filters so you can do that without having to scroll through your full inbox.

To start, you can choose between three filters that will appear at the top of your chat list: All, Unread, Groups, which can be selected with just a tap:
  • All: The default view of all your messages.
  • Unread: Perfect for when you want to see which conversations you need to catch up on or respond to. It shows messages that are either marked by you as unread or haven’t been opened yet, so you can prioritize your responses.
  • Groups: A highly requested feature, now all your group chats will be organized in one place, making it easier to find your favorite ones whether it’s your weekly family dinner discussion or planning your next vacation. This will also show subgroups of Communities.

WhatsApp Communities gets an event planner, replies to announcement groups

WhatsApp has announced two new features for Communities. The instant messaging app now lets you create events in group chats that are part of a community. The feature, which makes it easier to set up virtual meetings or plan birthday parties on WhatsApp, was spotted under testing earlier this month.

Users who are part of a community group chat can create an event, which will get pinned at the top of the chat thread and also accessible via the group's information page, according to WhatsApp. Other users attending the event can respond to it and know who else is going. They will get automatic notifications as the event's date and time get close. WhatsApp said the events feature will roll out to all groups in the coming months.

A future update to WhatsApp might help those who get intimidated after seeing a huge number of unread messages every day. The Meta-owned messaging platform is working on an option to clear unread message count, WABetaInfo discovered in WhatsApp beta for Android v2.24.11.13, which is now available through the Google Play Beta program.

A screenshot of the feature suggests WhatsApp will add a new toggle button "Clear unread when app opens" to the Notifications page. When turned on, it will automatically reset the unread message notifications every time the user opens WhatsApp.

A new feature in development under WhatsApp's roof will let you generate profile photos using artificial intelligence. WABetaInfo discovered the AI profile photos feature in the recently released WhatsApp beta for Android v2.24.11.17, now available through the Google Play Beta Program.

According to a supposed screenshot of the feature shared by the website, you can describe the type of profile picture you want to generate by giving text prompts to the instant messaging app. The feature can help create unique and personalized profile photos reflecting the personality, interests, and moods.
