WhatsApp has started rolling out the ability to quickly forward or rewind a video in its instant messaging app. You can double tap on the right or left side of the screen to quickly move forward or backward in a video by 10 seconds.

The feature, which has been under testing for a while now, works similarly to how you can forward or rewind a video in streaming apps like Netflix and YouTube. The ability to forward/rewind a video is now shipped with WhatsApp's latest update for iOS available on the App Store.

WhatsApp has started rolling out its Favorites feature to some testers running WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.7.18, WABetaInfo reports, adding the update is available through the Google Play Beta Program.

As the name suggests, the feature lets you mark important contacts and groups as favorites within the Calls tab. These contacts are easily accessible in a separate section in the Calls tab. This new addition might save some valuable time as you don't need to scroll down to find people's names in the call log or type it in the Contact list.

Find Messages Faster with Chat Filters

Opening WhatsApp and finding the right conversation should feel quick, seamless, and simple. As people increasingly do more on WhatsApp, it’s more important than ever before to be able to get to your messages fast. That’s why today we’re launching new Chat Filters so you can do that without having to scroll through your full inbox.

To start, you can choose between three filters that will appear at the top of your chat list: All, Unread, Groups, which can be selected with just a tap:
  • All: The default view of all your messages.
  • Unread: Perfect for when you want to see which conversations you need to catch up on or respond to. It shows messages that are either marked by you as unread or haven’t been opened yet, so you can prioritize your responses.
  • Groups: A highly requested feature, now all your group chats will be organized in one place, making it easier to find your favorite ones whether it’s your weekly family dinner discussion or planning your next vacation. This will also show subgroups of Communities.

WhatsApp Communities gets an event planner, replies to announcement groups

WhatsApp has announced two new features for Communities. The instant messaging app now lets you create events in group chats that are part of a community. The feature, which makes it easier to set up virtual meetings or plan birthday parties on WhatsApp, was spotted under testing earlier this month.

Users who are part of a community group chat can create an event, which will get pinned at the top of the chat thread and also accessible via the group's information page, according to WhatsApp. Other users attending the event can respond to it and know who else is going. They will get automatic notifications as the event's date and time get close. WhatsApp said the events feature will roll out to all groups in the coming months.

WhatsApp has been readying various improvements for the Status updates feature in the Updates tab. The instant messaging app is already working on a redesigned user interface featuring vertical thumbnails for Status updates, currently available to beta testers.

According to WABetaInfo, the company has started rolling out a new ranking system for Status updates to some beta testers running recent Android beta versions of the instant messaging app. WhatsApp's Status ranking system is designed to prioritize and reorder updates from specific contacts based on various factors, making them appear first on the list.

WhatsApp ranks Status updates depending on who you contact frequently, your pinned chats, and recently messaged contacts. It also gives priority to the Status updates that are about to expire. The feature is meant to figure out which contacts have a higher level of interaction, importance, immediacy, and relevance, and reorder the updates accordingly.

WhatsApp is working to improve its instant messaging apps by adding new camera controls. WABetaInfo reports that the Meta-owned company has started rolling out improved zoom controls for the camera UI on Android.

The feature is available as part of WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.15.3 through the Google Play Beta program. It sits at the bottom of the screen near the option to switch between front and rear cameras. You can access WhatsApp's camera UI by going to a personal or group chat, and then tap on the Camera button near the text field.

New zoom controls are being tested on WhatsApp after several years. The instant messaging app already offers the ability to zoom in and zoom out while recording since 2016. You can press and hold the camera button and swipe up or down to adjust the zoom levels, however, the recording stops when you lift your finger. There is no way to change the zoom when you're recording a video.

The new button aims to improve the experience by allowing you to adjust zoom precisely without interrupting the recording. The website notes that you can set a desired zoom level before taking a photo or while recording a video, adding that a pinch-to-zoom gesture at least once may be required to make the button visible.

Focusing on your favorites just got a lot easier on WhatsApp. Starting today, you can quickly find the people and groups that matter most at the top of your calls tab and as a filter for your chats.

Whether it’s your family group chat or your best friend, your ‘favorites’ will be the same across your chats and calls, so you can speed dial them from your calls tab too.

To add to your ‘favorites’:
  • From your chats screen, select the ‘favorites’ filter, and select your contacts or groups there.
  • From the calls tab, tap ‘Add favorite’ and select your contacts or groups.
  • Or, simply manage your ‘favorites’ in your settings by going to Settings > Favorites > Add to Favorites, and you can reorder them at any time.
We’re rolling out to users today, and will be available to everyone in the coming weeks.

WhatsApp continuously works on new features to elevate the user experience on both Android and iOS. After being first tested for Android users, WhatsApp is now spotted testing a new AirDrop-like file-sharing feature for iOS users.

According to WABetaInfo, the latest beta version of WhatsApp for iOS, which is available on TestFlight, allows iPhone users to use a new feature called Nearby Share. Using this Nearby Share feature, iPhone users will be able to share photos, videos, documents, etc., with people nearby, without needing to connect to the internet.

The Nearby Share feature spotted in the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS uses end-to-end encryption. This means that only the intended receiver can access the content. Notably, the feature on iOS works a bit differently as compared to the Android version, because of certain iOS limitations.
