Wireguard abd IKEV2
Wireguard since its the fastest.
Lightway for ExpressVPN and Wireguard for the others because they are the fastest
Windscribe ,
but I use it because I had a giveaway code before,
60GB data plan every 30 days , and no expiration date .
VPN isn't a necessary software for me ,
except for my business trip to China ~
I used ExpressVPN in China at the end of April 2019 ,
however , ExpressVPN not working well in China , and often fails to connect.
I contact their customer service but the reply told me there is nothing they can do ,
only suggest me to try different server .
Anyway , in China , it depends on luck whether the VPN can be used.

bulletvpn it got a good review on a freeware site. i had to pay $40 for a lifetime license for it.

Note: I'm using rarely a VPN on my laptop, rather sometimes on my mobile (iPhone).

I just saw the title ,
I didn't think too much, I mistakenly thought it was a discussion about VPN providers...
My bad ...
, I will find a time to go for a eye check ~ 
I usually don't care to much the VPN provides are using what kind VPN protocol ,
however , if anyone try to build a private VPN server at home ,
I would recommend using SSR or V2ray protocol ,
these two encryption protocols tested by many people,
it is the most effective in China .

I actually use Windscribe 50 GB monthly same as you, it also has WireGuard
and new protocol is Lightway its beta, its only for ExpressVPN...

I went to China at the end of April 2019 for 2 weeks ,
i am not sure ExpressVPN had Lightway protocol or not at that time ?
Before this , I sent an email to ask Windscribe's customer service ,
Did Windscribe available in China ?
Customer service reply me , some user report that the IKEv2 seems works some times ,
but they can't guarantee for it .
I also ask them did Windscribe provide SSR or V2ray protocol ? and the answer is no , they don't have it .
to make sure i won't get into the dilemma of disconnection , i decide to chose a well-known VPN service providers ,
and this is why i choes ExpressVPN but not Windscrible before i went to China .
But it's a pity , ExpressVPN doesn't good like Ad says ,
the connection success rate is less than 50% , and the speed and ping are terrible ,
and i do not know what kind protocol ExpressVPN are using ,
because i can't see any description or comment on ExpressVPN's program(APP) ....
Well , this is just my little experience ~
