I wouldn't trust any VPN that won't let me tie to it via local address sock5 proxy. I like the safety net. Again, that's not a socks5 instead of the VPN, but a socks5 to the vpn.

I've been using PIA for 11 years, and was happy with it. I've tried NordVPN before, but it wasn't the way I wanted it. Now I got a very good offer from NordVPN and tried it again, and this time I went for it. It has become very good, has an incredible amount of new things to offer to secure me online. The speed is similar to PIA now, and I'm no longer denied access to my channels. So now I have 2 years to test NordVPN;)

I’d say NordVPN’s been my go-to. It’s super reliable for streaming without lag, and I like that they have a bunch of servers to pick from. I’ve tried others, but Nord’s worked out best for me, especially for keeping my browsing private.

Found a better one, SurfShark ! With Mullvad too many Captcha entries needed.
100 points for the Mullvad Captcha syndrome. The only thing that I think helped (I don't use it routinely, everyday any more) was to connect to a nearer server location to me and go with the OpenVPN protocol, rather than their Wireguard. It seemed to get flagged less often that way.

iCloud Private Relay. Low ping. Double hop. Quantum encryption. Not blacklisted by the entire world. Apple uses brand new and even experimental protocols to reduce latency. Having it on only adds 1ms to my ping.

Only downside is that it will turn off automatically if a network blocks the servers. It should have a firewall setting to always be on no matter what but Apple seems to prioritize convenience over privacy.

so you & TuxTalk mean visiting websites using Mullvad and too many websites require Captcha to use them... I suppose I get one occasionally, but not annoyingly so. that's more of an anti_vpn than Mullvad problem...? Mulvad has been around for a long time, so I guess its vpn servers are better known than some others...? (or am I out of touch re this??)

It depended on where I went, I guess, but since I'm pretty basic in my surfing these days (mostly the same sites every day) it became less of an issue, maybe since I also went with OpenVPN most of the time? Originally with Mullvad, I was getting emails from my bank asking if it was really me trying to login That did stop after awhile, when I connected from Chicago from my MN location.

With F-Secure's VPN, I never really had that issue, but they don't have a Wireguard protocol.

Same with me, too many captcha requests, it started to freak me out so i ditched MV

OVPN is the one I use now which gives me virtually no speed loss, & they use no hard drives & own all their servers - Though IVPN, Mullvad & AdGuard VPN also am happy to use - HideAway also like AdGuard uses it's own protocol works well with no leaks.

I would caution against Nord or Express VPN because they use their own protocols, and not standard ones which can easily be used on a router.
