I've always used it and never paid anything. It's just like AV, you don't need the paid features.

Technically there are no paid features present, yet they are present. There is an entire reddit thread dedicated to "I just bought the winrar license for the hell of it.". You really only get rid of the notification that there is no license present. I know a bunch of people that just bought the license, just to support rarlabs for the pure fun of it.

I remember that joke... So it's actually entirely free.

I previously use WinRAR Trial. After change to a more cost-efficient approach, I found 7Zip really usable but with less appealing UI than Peazip. So now I'm using PeaZip (Although it's slower than 7Zip). Still missing the functionality of RAR format though.

Only issue I had with 7zip is that password protecting zips didn't always work (corrupted) which could be a nightmare. I use Peazip and never experienced the same problem.

For me personally I prefer Bandizip. I have tried several Archive programs in the past but some how I keep getting back to Bandizip. ( So since this year bandizip is the one I am sticking to. )

I use Ashampoo Zip because I got it for free while on promotion but if I were to choose between WinRar and 7zip I'd definitely use WinRar.
