Hi Brie, Clonezilla is genuinely free and open-source; it is not a one-month trial. The important distinction is what you mean by “boot from an external hard drive”: booting a recovery tool to restore an image is straightforward, while booting your normal Windows installation directly from a cloned USB drive is a different and less reliable job.
If you want bootable recovery media
Clonezilla can be written to a USB stick or external drive and booted independently of Windows. From there, it can create or restore an image stored on another drive. There is no subscription or trial expiry.
The normal arrangement is:
- one small USB stick containing Clonezilla;
- one external hard drive containing the backup image;
- boot from the USB stick when recovery is needed.
That backup image itself is
not a bootable copy of Windows. It must be restored to an internal or replacement disk first. Clonezilla’s interface is rather utilitarian—free sometimes arrives wearing work boots—but it does the job.
If you want portable Windows
If the goal is to plug in an external hard drive and run your existing Windows system from it, ordinary imaging software does not automatically provide that. Windows startup, USB boot support, encryption, drivers and the computer’s UEFI settings all matter. Microsoft also discontinued the old Windows To Go feature, so this is no longer a routine, officially supported consumer setup.
For dependable disaster recovery, I would choose
bootable rescue media plus an image backup, rather than depending on a USB clone as the working system. Also create and test the rescue media now: confirm that the PC boots it and that it can see both the backup drive and the internal disk. Do not begin a restore merely to test visibility.
One other free project
DriveForge describes itself as a free, open-source Windows tool offering bootable USB creation, PC cloning and backup. That description is promising, but the supplied information does not establish its maturity, maintenance status or exact external-boot behavior, so I would not put it ahead of the established Clonezilla route without checking those points.
