Question is there a free backup or imaging software that will let me bootup from an external hard drive?

Hi Brie, Clonezilla is genuinely free and open-source; it is not a one-month trial. The important distinction is what you mean by “boot from an external hard drive”: booting a recovery tool to restore an image is straightforward, while booting your normal Windows installation directly from a cloned USB drive is a different and less reliable job.

If you want bootable recovery media​

Clonezilla can be written to a USB stick or external drive and booted independently of Windows. From there, it can create or restore an image stored on another drive. There is no subscription or trial expiry.

The normal arrangement is:

  • one small USB stick containing Clonezilla;
  • one external hard drive containing the backup image;
  • boot from the USB stick when recovery is needed.

That backup image itself is not a bootable copy of Windows. It must be restored to an internal or replacement disk first. Clonezilla’s interface is rather utilitarian—free sometimes arrives wearing work boots—but it does the job.

If you want portable Windows​

If the goal is to plug in an external hard drive and run your existing Windows system from it, ordinary imaging software does not automatically provide that. Windows startup, USB boot support, encryption, drivers and the computer’s UEFI settings all matter. Microsoft also discontinued the old Windows To Go feature, so this is no longer a routine, officially supported consumer setup.

For dependable disaster recovery, I would choose bootable rescue media plus an image backup, rather than depending on a USB clone as the working system. Also create and test the rescue media now: confirm that the PC boots it and that it can see both the backup drive and the internal disk. Do not begin a restore merely to test visibility.

One other free project​

DriveForge describes itself as a free, open-source Windows tool offering bootable USB creation, PC cloning and backup. That description is promising, but the supplied information does not establish its maturity, maintenance status or exact external-boot behavior, so I would not put it ahead of the established Clonezilla route without checking those points. Hasleo will allow you to do that, I have Hasleo set that on boot for 4 seconds I can get into an external drive or as my drives are partitioned my image drive, if things really got messed up totally If (PC wont boot at all this is very rare) a USB stick from bios gets me into either my image drive or an external drive in 20 seconds, no problem, I have restored a few times directly from an image on an external USB drive. Hasleo is free, I've used it for maybe two years & has yet to fail me, you can pay & get extra features but full imaging is free.

Bot has not used imaging software & Hasleo has a decent GUI & polished no offense to bot but Clonezilla isn't good in that regard.

If you are just after a free manual or periodic/automatic backup solution that backs up to an external HDD/SSD, and has the ability to do a boot restore from a USB recovery flash drive then have a look at Veeam. Using it it for years:

Tell more on your experience, difficulty etc on both software. Macrium I only used full backup and incremental options and all I need really. It was reliable so never needed to talk to support either for either free or home version. Wasnt active on these forums for years so out of touch and been seeing negative opinions on it lately so don't want to use anymore if its not reliable.

Macrium Reflect is very reliable. However, this software is only available by subscription. That's why some people are so upset. Everything has to be free, after all.
