The release contains only three feature improvements:
  • Preview PDF files in Microsoft Outlook and File Explorer. Edge users can open a PDF file in a new lightweight and rich read-only preview. It works with PDF attachments in Outlook Desktop and local PDF files in File Explorer.
  • Sync web apps across all desktop devices. Microsoft Edge is now capable of syncing progressive web apps across all your desktop devices (assuming you signed in using a single account and turned on sync).
  • Improvements to the Cloud Site List Management experience for IE Mode. Edge now allows configuring session cookie sharing between the main browser and IE Mode in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. Microsoft notes that this change is a part of controlled feature rollout, and it will take a while to reach all Edge users.

Dev channel update to 101.0.1198.0 is live
Hello Insiders! Today we’re releasing build 101.0.1198.0 to the Dev channel. Our big news today is that we’ve officially announced our support for Xbox Cloud Gaming on Steam Deck! Right now, this support requires Edge Beta, and the steps to get it all set up are available here: https://www.reddit.com/r/MicrosoftEdge/comments/th77w9/microsoft_edge_beta_the_browser_for_xbox_clou.... Not a Reddit user? We’ve also got a support article here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/xbox-cloud-gaming-in-microsoft-edge-with-steam-deck-43dd01....

In case you missed it in the last update, we’ve launched a GitHub repo for feedback about the F12 Dev Tools. Also, you may have noticed a tile on the update Welcome page about auto-generated image labels recently. Today, we’ve got a blog post going into more detail about that feature: https://blogs.windows.com/msedgedev/2022/03/17/appears-to-say-microsoft-edge-auto-generated-image-la.... As for everything that’s new and noteworthy this week:

Added features:
  • Enabled by default the ability to view PDF properties and metadata.
  • Added info to the Edge Bar about the current URL.
  • Management policies (note that updates to documentation and administrative templates may not have occurred yet):
    • Added a policy to control if Kiosk Swipe Gestures are Enabled, which controls if swipe gestures to navigate forward and back are functional in Kiosk mode.
    • Added a policy to Configure Keyboard Shortcuts, which configures which keyboard shortcuts are disabled.
    • Added a policy to control if the Microsoft Office Menu is Enabled.
    • Added a policy in Internet Explorer Mode to Enable Save page As, which has previously been disabled in IE mode tabs.
    • Added support on Mac for the policy to set the Auto Update Check Period in Minutes.
  • Developer (note that updates to documentation and SDKs may not have occurred yet):
    • Added an API to WebView2 for initial support for multiple profiles. Note that this API was previously in the “Experimental” status.
    • Added an API to WebView2 to set the default download location. Note that this API was previously in the “Experimental” status.
    • Added an experimental API to WebView2 to verify or block a certificate from the server when an error is detected.
It's hard to believe, but because of the delays we had in the last couple of weeks, next week is already our last scheduled release or two for version 101!

Final words: Latest Canary update brought Side Panel to Microsoft Edge for users to quickly access favorites and Reading lists. However, the feature could soon vanish with the next update as Microsoft Edge Senior PM confirmed that as a bug.

Spotted by Leopeva64-2, the latest Edge Canary update introduced the ability to pin tab groups. This feature works like pinning tabs, so the browser can open the pinned group the next time you launch it. In addition to keeping the group on the tab strip, Microsoft Edge will "save" the group on the favorites bar, allowing you to restore the group with a single click. The same feature is available in Chrome, but due to its experimental nature and early implementation, Chrome does not preserve groups after shutdown.

Microsoft appears to be A/B testing improved tab groups in Edge Canary, so only a subset of Edge Insiders can test group pinning. You can check whether your copy of Edge Canary has the feature by right-clicking any tab and selecting "Add page to a new group." After that, the browser should offer you to rename, assign a color, and pin the newly created group.

The latest version of Microsoft Edge Canary brings a new notable feature for progressive web apps. Users can enable a new experimental flag to let PWAs "handle" links. In other words, you can open links from other programs directly in related web apps instead of launching the browser.

Here is an example of how this feature works: you receive a message in Telegram with a YouTube link. You click the link, and Windows opens it in the YouTube PWA instead of the browser.

The latest version of Microsoft Edge Canary brings improvements for managing extensions in the browser. Microsoft wants to give its users more flexibility by allowing them to pause and enable all extensions with a single click. This feature will come in handy when you visit a sensitive website and want to make sure no third-party extension can access the information.

You can pause all extensions in Microsoft Edge Canary by opening the extension flyout. Click the button with three dots in the upper-right corner and select "Pause extensions on this site." After that, Microsoft Edge will place a big banner in the extension flyout with a message that the browser has suspended all extensions. You can restore extensions by pressing the "Resume extensions" button.

Microsoft also added another way to prevent extensions from working on websites with sensitive information. Edge received a new setting that can detect a potentially sensitive page and shut down all extensions automatically. Microsoft says the new feature will work, for example, on banking and payment sites.

The new privacy settings for extensions in Microsoft Edge are currently available to some insiders in the Canary channel as a part of A/B testing. Some users can access it right away, while others need to wait a few days or weeks for Microsoft to expand the testing scope.

Edge Dev 102.0.1220.1 adds improvements to PWA and password import on mobile
What is new in Microsoft Edge 102.0.1220.1:
Added features:
  • Added a prompt to pin PWAs after they’ve been installed from the Microsoft Store.
  • Redesigned the Apps management page.
  • Added the ability to import passwords on mobile.
  • Added a management policy to control if the Outlook Hub Menu is Enabled. Note that updates to documentation and administrative templates may not have occurred yet.
Improved reliability:
  • Fixed a crash when using 2-factor authentication to sign into the browser.
  • Fixed a crash on Android.
  • Fixed a crash on Android when using the search widget.
Changed behavior:
  • Fixed an issue where the tab bar sometimes disappears.
  • Fixed an issue where the Setting to use a custom Secure DNS provider doesn’t work.
  • Fixed an issue where the Find bar shows 0 matches even though there are related matches shown on the page.
  • Fixed an issue where the window control buttons are sometimes invisible when certain themes are applied.
  • Fixed an issue where background tabs are sometimes invisible when certain themes are applied.
  • Fixed an issue on mobile where signing into the browser fails.
  • Fixed an issue in WebView2 apps where URL fragments are sometimes inadvertently removed during a navigation redirection.
  • Disabled Kids Mode in Application Guard windows.
Note that Edge Dev is one of the preview channels Microsoft uses to test early updates and new features before shipping them to the public. That means you may encounter more problems and bugs than the stable version. Here are known issues in this release:
  • Users of certain ad blocking extensions may experience playback errors on YouTube. As a workaround, temporarily disabling the extension should allow playback to proceed. See this help article for more details.
  • Some users are still running into an issue where all tabs and extensions immediately crash with a STATUS_INVALID_IMAGE_HASH error. The most common cause of this error is outdated security or antivirus software from vendors like Symantec, and in those cases, updating that software will fix it.
  • Users of the Kaspersky Internet Suite who have the associated extension installed may sometimes see webpages like Gmail fail to load. This failure is due to the main Kaspersky software being out of date, and is thus fixed by making sure the latest version is installed.
  • Some users are seeing “wobbling” behavior when scrolling using trackpad gestures or touchscreens, where scrolling in one dimension also causes the page to subtly scroll back and forth in the other. Note that this only affects certain websites and seems to be worse on certain devices. This is most likely related to our ongoing work to bring scrolling back to parity with Edge Legacy’s behavior, so if this behavior is undesirable, you can temporarily turn it off by disabling the edge://flags/#edge-experimental-scrolling flag.

Microsoft Edge recently received a new button for enabling picture in picture (PiP) mode. The browser now places a compact button on top of any video, allowing users to turn on PiP without diving into the context menu. It is a nice change to improve feature discoverability, but not all users might like it. For those who would rather get rid of the button, Microsoft has some good news.

The latest Microsoft Edge Canary adds the option to disable the picture in picture button. Open Microsoft Edge Canary, then go to edge://settings/content/PictureInPicture and turn off the "Show Picture in picture control inside video frame" toggle. Alternatively, you can open Settings and navigate to Cookies and site permissions > Picture in picture control.

Dev channel update to 102.0.1227.0 is live
Hello Insiders! Today we’re releasing build 102.0.1227.0 to the Dev channel. We’ve also got a great roundup of a series of blog posts we did a month ago about PWAs. Ever wondered what they are or what we’re talking about whenever we use that term? Get all the info you’ve ever wanted right here: https://blogs.windows.com/msedgedev/2022/04/14/30-days-of-pwa-fall-in-love-with-progressive-web-apps.... As for what’s new and noteworthy in the product this week:

Added features:
  • Added a management policy to control if the Network Service Sandbox is Enabled. Note that disabling the Network process sandbox is an increased security risk, and updates to documentation and administrative templates may not have occurred yet.
Next week is our final expected week for Dev 102, so thanks for all your help getting us there!

Microsoft Edge 102, which is currently available for testing in the Canary channel, now comes with a new experimental flag called "Show experimental appearance settings." It lets you preview early appearance settings in the browser. Unfortunately, it appears that the new flag does not offer much, and no new settings pop in Edge after enabling it.

The flag to enable experimental appearance settings in Edge Canary

The only new option in the appearance settings is the ability to let sidebar apps show notifications, but this toggle seems unrelated to experimental appearance settings managed by the flag.

Final words:

Though YouTube is a Google service, Microsoft is integrating it into the Edge browser and making it super easy to follow Creators, which the user loves. Users get notified when the creators post updates. The feature is still being tested in Edge Canary, Microsoft hasn’t announced it till now. We’re not sure when this feature will hit the Edge release and becomes available to the public.

Dev channel update to 102.0.1235.1 is live
Hello Insiders! Today we’re releasing build 102.0.1235.1 to the Dev channel. I know I mentioned last week that this will be the final build for the Dev channel for 102, but it’s looking like it won’t be, so be on the lookout for a build higher than 1235 soon. As for what’s in this one:

Added features:
  • Added a link to Tabs From Other Devices in the Tab Actions menu.
  • Enabled support for a management policy from Chromium to control if the javascript engine behavior to Set Timeout Without 1 Ms Clamp is Enabled, which controls if calls to setTimeout() with a 0ms timeout are changed to have a 1ms timeout. Note that updates to documentation and administrative templates may not have occurred yet.

Microsoft Edge could soon receive an integrated VPN service called the “Microsoft Edge Secure Network”. The VPN (Virtual Private Network) service would work very similar to commercial VPN services, but it could be deeply integrated within the Microsoft Edge browser.

Microsoft seems ready to deploy the Microsoft Edge Secure Network service. The VPN service will be powered by Cloudflare. The company assures it permanently deletes the diagnostic and support data collected, every 25 hours.

Note: Microsoft Edge Secure Network is a preview feature. Preview features are services that are in development and are made available on a "preview" basis so users can get early access and send us feedback.

Microsoft is working on a built-in VPN functionality for the Edge browser called 'Edge Secure Network', but there's a catch - it is not a proper replacement for your VPN.
