Edge Canary gets Windows 11-like redesign with rounded tabs and Mica effect
Microsoft recently added a new setting for managing experimental appearance settings in Edge Canary. The toggle did not work initially, but now you can use it to test what looks like the biggest Edge redesign since its launch in early 2020.

Microsoft is on track to introduce more Windows 11-like design bits in the Edge browser. Two of them are already available in Edge Canary: tabs with rounded corners and the Mica effect. The first one makes the tab strip look similar to Firefox, with the bottom edge "detached" from the toolbar, and the Mica effect adds dynamic translucency to primary parts of the UI (tabs and the toolbar).

1651092958_msedge_bfantemuz0_story.jpg

Note that both changes are experimental, which means Microsoft might remove them at some point. If you want to try the updated UI in Edge, do the following:
  1. Update Microsoft Edge Canary to the latest version on Windows 11. The new design will not work on Windows 10.
  2. Open the browser and go to edge://flags. Find the "Show experimental appearance settings" flag and enable it.
  3. Restart Edge, then go to edge://settings/appearance and turn on "Show Windows 11 visual effects" and "Use rounded corners for browser tabs."
  4. Restart the browser again.

Another article on the upcoming VPN feature:
A support document revealed that Microsoft is secretly developing its own ‘Edge Secure Network’ with VPN-like capabilities, leading many to believe that Edge will get an Opera-like built-in and full-fledged VPN tool. However, as we spectated, Edge Secure Network is actually not a proper replacement for VPNs.

Microsoft Edge Secure Network is now available for some users and one of our Edge Canary installations has also received the feature.

As highlighted in the support document, Edge Secure Network uses Cloudflare to encrypt the traffic through one of the world’s largest DNS. Similar to VPN services, Microsoft Edge’s Cloudflare VPN can prevent online tracking by encrypting the traffic and keeping your location private.

The internet service provider cannot monitor your activities as the IP address is replaced by Cloudflare’s and data is routed through an encrypted tunnel to create a secure connection, which means the result is a secured web experience even when browsing a non-secure URL or webpages that start with HTTP or use untrusted SSL certificates.

Other benefits:
  • Microsoft Edge tracking protection makes it harder for hackers to access your browsing data.
  • Prevented data sharing with public Wi-Fi.
  • Your data cannot be linked to your browser as traffic is routed through Cloudflare and your IP is masked.
A comment that explains the VPN feature better:
The point is protecting the user and not to circumvent Netflix or some other legitimate company. Microsoft isn't going to assist people in stealing content. Apparently "spoofing" is fine if you initiate it, but not OK if it's done TO you.

Dev channel update to 102.0.1245.3 is live
Hello Insiders, we come to you today at a slightly different time than our normal releases! Right now, you should now have build 102.0.1245.3 in the Dev channel. Soon, we’ll also be releasing the first build of version 103, but before then, there may be another small patch or two to 102. We’ve also got an article explaining the rationale behind an experimental new web control to build dropdown menus: Styling `select` elements for real. As for everything in the build right now:

Added features:
  • Added support for a custom IE mode list in Settings.
  • Added the ability to add a password directly in Settings.
  • Enabled support for XCloud Clarity Boost by default.
  • Enabled support for a management policy from Chromium to control if the User Agent Client Hints GREASE Update is Enabled, which controls if the updated GREASE specification is used (which could lead to broken websites) or an older version. Note that updates to documentation and administrative templates may not be available yet.
  • Developer (note that updates to documentation and SDKs may not be available yet, and all of the below APIs were previously in the “Experimental” status):
    • Added an API to WebView2 to Clear Browsing Data.
    • Added an API to WebView2 apps to handle Server Certificate Errors.
    • Added an API to WebView2 to monitor HTTP navigation Status Codes.
Beta users: be on the lookout for version 102 soon too!
EDIT: added Neowin coverage:

Top Feedback Summary for April 2022
Greetings, Insiders! We appreciate your continued patience and support as we worked behind the scenes to provide an update for you all. One of the things we are working on is looking at gathering more details from you, as Insiders, on how we can improve our communications around your top feedback submissions. Keep an eye out for when we publish the survey to gather those insights from you all. There’s a few updates for you this month, so let’s jump into it!

We are excited to share that Enable option for downloads to show at the bottom of the screen is moving from Under Review to Alternative Planned! This is a bit of a weird one in which we are going to address this feedback in the form of improving the existing downloads experience. The team wants to hear your continued feedback on this, so be sure to let them know your thoughts via the in-app feedback tool (steps on how to submit are at the end of this post).

We have seen feedback across all the platforms we listen on that the context menu is obscenely large. We hear that both the right-click context and the menus are too long, too wide, and don’t offer any ways to customize. You may have seen some ways we are attempting to address these pain points in our Canary channel. We want to hear from you still, please continue to send us feedback and suggestions on how it can be improved for you!

We’re not only adding a new item on, but we’re also marking it as Addressed! We saw increased reports around Print and Print Preview are not available on some sites, and before we could get it added to this list the team addressed it! Definitely let us know if you see other sites that are not giving the print or print preview options in the future.

That’s it for this update! We will be back soon with your next top feedback updates. Did you know we have a new portal in which you can submit feedback on what changes you want to see? You can search to see if your idea is already on the Edge Feedback portal, or post it up to get other likeminded people to comment and vote on your suggestion. Have something you think might be more of a bug? Send it to us directly through the in-app feedback tool by heading to the menu > Help and feedback > Send feedback and include diagnostics. Detailing exactly what you see will ensure that the team understands the issue at hand, and if you include your email address it offers you the ability to receive email updates whenever we take action on your item.

Until our next update, Insiders. Happy browsing!

Edge 103 is moving from Canary to Dev. The first 103 release is now available for testing in this week's Dev update. Version 103.0.1253.0 is a relatively minor update, with the most significant new feature being support for a natural voice for search in history. You can open the history flyout and type something similar to "YouTube from last week".

What is new in Microsoft Edge Dev 103.0.1253.0?

Added features:
  • Added the ability to pin PWA/websites installed as apps to the taskbar from their … menus.
  • Enabled by default the ability to search in the History popup using natural language (for example, “Youtube from last week”).
  • Added a management policy to set the Internet Explorer mode Zoom Display type, which controls if the browser’s zoom level takes into account the current display scale like IE used to (for example, if display scaling is set to 150%, then IE’s default zoom level would show 150%). Note that updates to documentation and administrative templates may not have occurred yet.
Improved reliability:
  • Fixed a crash on launch.
  • Fixed a crash when visiting certain websites.
  • Fixed a crash when adding items to Collections.
  • Fixed a crash when switching profiles in the Edge Bar.
  • Fixed a crash in WebView2 applications when adding Status Bar text (Issue 2414).
Changed behavior:
  • Temporarily disabled the search box in the Alerts and Tips popup.
  • Fixed an issue where the browser sometimes doesn’t respond to links clicked from other applications if it’s not already open.
  • Fixed an issue where the browser isn’t brought into the foreground if it’s minimized when clicking on a notification in the Windows Action Center.
  • Fixed an issue where previously-opened tabs are sometimes restored when first opening the browser even though they’re not supposed to be.
  • Fixed an issue where vertical tabs are improperly colored when using custom themes.
  • Fixed an issue where the Find on Page UI is red.
  • Fixed an issue where navigator.mediaCapabilities sometimes doesn’t report proper decodingInfo to websites.
  • Fixed an issue where app or popup windows opened from IE mode tabs don’t automatically resize when they’re supposed to.
  • Fixed an issue in WebView2 apps where the on-screen keyboard sometimes doesn’t appear (Issue 460).
Known issues:
  • Users of certain ad blocking extensions may experience playback errors on YouTube. As a workaround, temporarily disabling the extension should allow playback to proceed. See this help article for more details.
  • Some users are still running into an issue where all tabs and extensions immediately crash with a STATUS_INVALID_IMAGE_HASH error. The most common cause of this error is outdated security or antivirus software from vendors like Symantec, and in those cases, updating that software will fix it.
  • Users of the Kaspersky Internet Suite who have the associated extension installed may sometimes see webpages like Gmail fail to load. This failure is due to the main Kaspersky software being out of date, and is thus fixed by making sure the latest version is installed.
  • Some users are seeing “wobbling” behavior when scrolling using trackpad gestures or touchscreens, where scrolling in one dimension also causes the page to subtly scroll back and forth in the other. Note that this only affects certain websites and seems to be worse on certain devices. This is most likely related to our ongoing work to bring scrolling back to parity with Edge Legacy’s behavior, so if this behavior is undesirable, you can temporarily turn it off by disabling the edge://flags/#edge-experimental-scrolling flag.
You can download Microsoft Edge Dev on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android from the official Edge Insider website.

Microsoft has officially announced a native VPN service for its Edge Browser. Called "Secure Network", it is available for preview in the Canary channel for a limited set of Edge Insiders. Users recently spotted the first traces of the feature, and now it is official.
To test Secure Network, download Microsoft Edge Canary from the official website and sign in with your Microsoft Account. Open the browser's menu, select Secure Network and turn it on. Note that using Secure Network during the preview period requires a Microsoft Account. According to Microsoft, it requires signing in to track free data usage, and the company automatically deletes all related information at the end of the service window.

I installed it but do not see the VPN option.
Article from neowin mentioned "available for preview in the Canary channel for a limited set of Edge Insiders." Probably that's the reason why...

A few days ago, Microsoft published a monthly Top Feedback Summary for Edge post on its Tech Community forum. It features the most popular feedback from users and Microsoft's plans to address it. Those using Edge will be glad to learn that Microsoft is aware of the most popular complaints, and the company is working on addressing them. Those include obnoxiously large context menus, downloads "shelf", and others.

Many Edge users agree that the browser's context menus have grown too big. On some devices, context menus no longer fit on the screen.
Here is what Microsoft has to say regarding this issue:
We hear that both the right-click context and the … menus are too long, too wide, and don’t offer any ways to customize. You may have seen some ways we are attempting to address these pain points in our Canary channel.

It might still take some time before the promised "attempts" show up in the Canary channel, not to mention Stable. Still, it is good to know that Microsoft is not deaf to users' outcry.

Edge Canary gets a built-in feature for sharing files and notes across devices

The most recent updates for Edge in the Canary channel have brought an interesting productivity-oriented feature. Microsoft is currently testing a new capability in the Edge browser to let users store and share files across devices and platforms.

The new feature is called "Drop." It "lives" in a dedicated side panel like Collections, History, Math Solver, etc. The idea behind Drop is to provide users with a cross-platform space for storing various content. You can drag and drop any file or create a note by typing it into a message box. Once synced, items in Drop become available in Edge on your other computers and mobile devices.

What? Are the changing SmartScreen's name in Edge?
