Microsoft outlines what's next for the PDF reader in Edge:
Today, Microsoft published an update to the roadmap for the PDF reader in its Edge browser. Indeed, the company is constantly adding new features to it, and it does update the roadmap from time to time.

The firm said that most requested features are available now across Windows, Mac, and Linux. These include things like support for a Table of Contents, page view, and filling basic forms when it comes to reading and navigation. For annotation, you can now ink in a variety of colors, and you can easily take text notes on a PDF. There have also been a variety of features for enterprise and education, like Read Aloud.

And then there are the features that are on the way. One big one is called view recovery, and what this does is it remembers the place where you were last reading the document. This might be especially useful if reading a book-sized PDF. You're also going to be able to view MIP files protected in other tenants, and validate certificate-based digital signatures.

That's all of the stuff that the team is currently working on, but there's more that's coming later. Microsoft is planning to add PDF file previews to the File Explorer and Outlook, and there's going to be support for adding textboxes for form filling. You'll also be able to view labels of protected files, validate ETSI digital signatures, and of course, there are accessibility improvements on the way.

Naturally, Microsoft didn't say when these features are rolling out. Obviously, the ones that it's working on now will arrive first.

Dev channel update to 90.0.810.1 is live:
Hello Insiders! Today we’re releasing build 90.0.810.1 to the Dev channel. Before we get into all the specifics, we’ve got a few exciting things to talk about:
And now, for everything else:

Added features:
  • Added the ability to drag and drop links onto the vertical tabs pane to open them in a new tab.
  • Added the ability to resize the vertical tabs pane.
  • Added support for more in-page translation languages.
  • Finished rolling out the new mini context menus in PDFs.
Top Feedback Summary for March 3:
Hello, Insiders! It’s been a bit, but we’re back here in March to update you on several of these statuses. We’re not closing anything out this round, but we are adding on a couple of new items y’all have been asking about. Let’s hop into it!

First up, we’re rolling back the status of one of the items here, Edge should respect the default PDF viewer. As the team continues to work with our internal partners, we’ve moved this item’s status back to Planned. We’ll provide more information as we get it and appreciate your understanding.

Next, we’re moving some items from Planned for February to March. We expect users to see the ability to add more top sites to the new tab page, be able to see a preview of a tab, have a dialog come up warning a user they’re closing all tabs, and the option to prevent auto-play of video and audio coming this month to Canary. As always, we will update you all on any status changes as we get them!

Finally, we’re excited to add on two new items you have been asking for, both currently Under Review by the team. One is something users have been asking for since the introduction of vertical tabs: Hide or shrink the title bar when vertical tabs are enabled. The next is a request for Collections: Enable search of items in Collections. Once the team reviews these items, we’ll provide a status update.

This was a huge update, but we could not do this without your input! Have any thoughts on these two new items that we’ve added this week? Send us those through the browser! If you’re on a Windows device, hold Alt+Shift+I, or head to the menu in the top right > Help and feedback > Send feedback. We'll chat at you all in next week's update!

Added features:
  • Added the ability to sort overall Collections.
  • Added the ability to drag and drop downloaded files from the list in the Downloads popup into webpages or folders.
  • Added the ability for users to manually search through their autofill data by pressing the / key.
  • Added an option to the Disable Developer Mode Extensions popup to stop showing it. Note that this popup only appears in Beta and Stable.
  • Finished rolling out the new Downloads popup menu.
  • Finished rolling out Startup Boost.
Top Feedback Summary for March 9:
Hey, Insiders! This week’s update is quite smaller than last week’s, but this is back to our normal cadence of updates as we return to our weekly timeline for these. Let’s see what’s being shuffled!

As we transitioned into chromium, we saw feedback from y’all that some fonts were blurry compared to others. We’re excited to let y’all know that you can expect to see improvements to fonts this month in Canary! This means Some web page fonts are blurry is now Planned for March. We’ll continue to share updates on this item as we get them.

Items on this list are because y’all tell us what you want! We want to know more, this list grows as you tell us what you want. Send us your thoughts and suggestions directly through the browser! If you’re on a Windows device, hold Alt+Shift+I, or head to the menu in the top right > Help and feedback > Send feedback to let us know what you are looking for in a browser.

Until next week!

Is it okay to tamper with flags in Edge? Someone told me not to because it might decrease Edge or system stability.
I now, just want to enable the flag for this:

Is that okay? Thanks.

Microsoft Edge: option to hide the titlebar in vertical tabs mode:
Microsoft introduced an option in the company's Edge browser recently that allows users to display tabs open in the browser in a sidebar instead of the horizontal tab strip.

The feature is not new, Vivaldi, another Chromium-based browser has supported it for some time, and other browsers, including Firefox, support it as well or have extensions that add the feature to the browser.

The current implementation in Microsoft Edge offers basic functionality only. Users may click on an icon in the browser's toolbar to switch between vertical and horizontal tab display modes.

The sidebar cannot be resized currently, but Microsoft will deal with that soon by enabling resizing options. Another issue weights heavier: the vertical tabs mode does not free up any space in the UI. The tab strip is removed, but Microsoft displays a titlebar by default instead that takes up its place.

That issue is going to be dealt with as well soon, as Microsoft introduced an option in Edge Canary to hide the titlebar when the vertical tabs mode is enabled.

A bit of UI is still displayed by Edge on top of the address bar unless it is displayed in fullscreen.

Microsoft Edge Canary users may enable it already:
  1. Load edge://flags/#edge-vertical-tabs-hide-titlebar in the Microsoft Edge address bar.
  2. Set the experimental flag to Enabled.
  3. Restart Microsoft Edge.
The titlebar is hidden when the flag is enabled. You may undo the change by setting it to Default or Disabled instead.

The change frees up quite a bit of height for the display of sites in the Microsoft Edge browser.

The feature will land in Edge Dev, Beta and Stable builds eventually. It is unknown at this point if the option to hide the titlebar in vertical tabs mode will be added to the Edge settings. It seems likely, as it improves customization options further and makes the sidebar mode more useful to users who want to hide as much browser chrome as possible.

These changes can be seen in Edge 91 Canary and in Edge 90 dev when you enable the color theme picker.

It’s unclear, which edge version will get these changes.

Dev channel update to 91.0.825.0 is live:
Hello Insiders! Today we’re releasing build 91.0.825.0 to the Dev channel. As you can see, this is the first build from version 91, which also means that version 90 is coming to Beta this week! As such, here’s everything we’re excited to talk about this week:
In product news:

Added features:
  • Added the ability to read Wikipedia pages in Immersive Reader with support for their built-in Table of Contents. Note that this is still being rolled out; for more details, click here: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/articles/make-reading-wikipedia-content-easier-and-more-acces....
  • Finished rolling out on-demand password generation from the context menu.
  • Improved Read Aloud to skip extraneous content on some webpages.
  • Added a management policy to control if New Tab Page Quick Links are Enabled. Note that updates to documentation or administrative templates may not be available yet.
  • Enabled the Chromium management policy to control Fetch Keepalive Duration On Shutdown.
Top Feedback Summary for March 16:
Why, hello there, Insiders! This week, our Dev channel is moving into Edge 91 and our Beta channel is going to get Edge 90! If you are one of our macOS users, you may have spotted that we have updated our icon there. All Insiders, once you’ve updated your Beta channel to Edge 90, should have this updated icon.
medium

While it’s not related to this list, there has been feedback around improvements to the updating process for users on macOS. We’re excited to announce that we are improving that experience. Check out Olivia’s overview of the new updater for macOS users, and let her know your thoughts in the thread!

Let’s jump into this week’s details. We are moving a couple items under Planned to give a timeline on when you can expect to see these updates in our Canary channel. Allow users to turn off the “Disable developer mode extensions” notification (which currently shows only in our Beta and Stable channels) should be addressed this month, so we’re updating that status to Planned for March. Users can get back to where they left off in PDF documents is moving to Planned for May, so keep an eye out in Canary for this update to PDFs (part of our ongoing work for PDF parity in Microsoft Edge, you can see more in our PDF roadmap).

Another item that is moving to Planned for May is something that was Under Review, Users can find and manage their tabs more easily by organizing them into associated groups. Tab groups have become increasingly popular as users discover vertical tabs, and we’re excited to bring them to the browser.

Lastly, we have Addressed one item, Some passwords are not saved. We worked closely with the Windows team to dig into this, and believe to have addressed the main cause of this in a recent Windows 10 update. Be sure to double check your Windows Update settings if you are still running into this. If you are on any other platform and continue to see any issues with your passwords saving, please let us know via the feedback tool!

That’s all for this week! If you haven’t spotted it yet, we do have a road map available for users on our Insiders website! Additionally, we have our Quarterly Insider survey up and ready for your thoughts! Be sure to let us know what you think of these forums and the program in that survey.
Quarterly Survey: March 2021:
Hello Microsoft Edge Insiders,

We are a little late with our new quarterly survey, but we hope that you will forgive us and help us with your feedback on the Insiders program! Again, we've made some changes to the survey and would love for you to give it a try. Windows 10: Is Edge coming as new spyware?
Let’s hope that the plans will quickly disappear into the drawer. In the latest Canary builds of the Edge browser, there is an option to share the history of visited websites in Edge with “other Windows features”. True, reasons could be found as to why this is needed. But this feature would be the perfect way to monitor where you’ve been surfing.

Web browsers already record everything that the user does: Visited websites can be found in the history, reader characters or the URLs of recently opened pages are saved. And the whole thing can be synchronized between devices. Microsoft Edge already offers some settings to collect diagnostic data (used to improve Edge’s performance and stability). Browsing history is used to display personalized ads or show search and location suggestions from user input in the Omnibox on input.

The colleagues at Techdows have now noticed that Microsoft has added a new setting to Edge profiles in the Canary version (91.0.831.0). This informs the user that Edge connects data from your profile to Windows.

The Share browsing data with other Windows features setting can be found under Settings> Profiles> and is pretty self-explanatory. It says:
Share browsing data with other Windows features
When turned on, Microsoft Edge will connect local browsing data from this profile with the rest of Windows. Turning this feature on will help you find information from your history, favorites, top sites, and recent tabs more easily using features such as the Windows Search box.

The setting reveals that it will be possible to find open tabs, history, and favorites from the Edge browser using the Windows Search box as an example. So far, the whole thing doesn’t really work on Windows 10, the setting is currently still a placeholder. But it’s clear that Microsoft wants to dovetail the new Chromium Edge and Windows 10 more with the new feature. The whole thing seems to be rolled out and activated as an A/B test only for selected users.

I don't see why this should be named Spyware
No, I agree, it's a catchy headline, but it's a setting to watch and good that they warn us.
It's up to the individual user if they want to enable or disable this.
The same goes for timeline on Windows 10.

First Look at Microsoft Edge's Math Solver

Math Solver is a new feature of Microsoft's Edge web browser that is being tested in development versions currently. The feature, just like many others, is slowly being rolled out to the entire development population.

At least in Edge Canary, it should be possible to enable the feature if it is not enabled by default. Check Menu > More Tools to find out about that; if you see Math Solver listed, it is enabled already. If you don't, do the following to enable it:
  1. Load edge://flags/#edge-math-solver in the browser's address bar.
  2. Set the Math Solver in Microsoft Edge status to Enabled.
  3. Restart the web browser.
