Microsoft Edge to add automatic HTTPS option for all domains:
Microsoft Edge will automatically redirect users to a secure HTTPS connection when visiting websites using the HTTP protocol, starting with version 92, coming in late July.

By default, this new option will allow Edge users to switch from HTTP to HTTPS on websites that are likely to support the more secure protocol.

However, users will also be able to configure the browser to upgrade all connections to HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) as the default internet communication protocol for all domains.

"Starting with Microsoft Edge version 92, users will have the option to upgrade navigations from HTTP to HTTPS on domains likely to support this more secure protocol," Microsoft said. "This support can also be configured to attempt delivery over HTTPS for all domains."

Dev channel update to 92.0.873.1 is live:
Hello Insiders! Today we’re releasing build 92.0.873.1 to the Dev channel. As you can see, this is the first build from version 92, so there’s not too much to talk about. We do have a preview of improvements we’re making to the Windows Task Manager though, and what Windows Insiders can look forward to in current builds: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/articles/microsoft-edge-windows-task-manager-improvements/m-p.... As for what’s new with the browser:

Added features:
  • Enabled support for a management policy from Chromium to control if Shared Array Buffer Unrestricted Access is Allowed.
  • Enabled support for a management policy from Chromium to control if Headless Mode is Enabled.
Since this is the first build of 92, that means version 91 is also set to go to Beta!
Top Feedback Summary for April 30:
Hello there, Insiders! This week we’re seeing the introduction of Edge 92 in our Dev channel. Did you happen to spot the new Android Dev channel we rolled out yesterday? This is only the beginning, continue to keep an eye out for more news for our mobile Insiders! This week’s feedback summary sees a few things move to May along with a couple other updates. Let’s jump in!

First, we are marking Users would like more theme and customization options as Addressed. We have updated the edge://settings/appearance page in our Dev and Canary channels to have more theme options directly in the browser rather than navigating to the Microsoft Edge Add-ons site. This feature update should also hit our Beta channel very soon! We understand that there may be more specific customizations that users are interested in. If you feel something is missing in your customization options in Edge, remember to share those thoughts with us via feedback by heading to the menu > Help and feedback > Send feedback. Let us know exactly what you are looking to customize so the team can review!

This week there are two items moving to Planned for May. Allow more top sites on the New Tab Page and Provide an option to prevent auto-play of video and audio when you open a website are items that some Insiders may see today, however the team continues work on these to bring you the best experience possible.

Lastly, Enable search of items in Collections is moving from Under Review to Planned! While we don’t have a specific time frame for when Insiders like yourselves will see this, we encourage you to keep an eye out on these weekly updates to see when the status changes.

That’s all for this week. We should be back to our regular update cadence next week, and we’ll chat at you all then!

Microsoft adds Sidebar Search for Images to Edge
Microsoft Edge allows users to search for selected text on Bing, the results will be displayed on the same page in a pane on the right side. Seems, Microsoft is expanding the Sidebar Search feature in Edge to images also. Edge Dev 92 currently makes it possible to search for images in the sidebar.

Microsoft replaced Edge Legacy’s Ask Cortana in the new Edge with a search in the sidebar feature.

Of course, the feature including the context menu option –search Bing in the sidebar — work and appear only when you use Bing as the Search engine in the Edge browser.

How to do Bing sidebar Search for images on Microsoft Edge

The image context menu provides search the web for image option and provides Image results, pages containing the image, text extracted from image, as well as related content in a new tab in Edge browser.

Almost the same information can be fetched and displayed by Bing in Edge in the sidebar when you right-click on an image and select “Search in sidebar for image“.

Hello, Insiders! Dev channel update to version 92.0.878.0 is going live now! There's really not much changing this week so we've updated last week's change summary to reflect that. If you missed last week's notes, you can read more here: https://aka.ms/edgedevreleasenotes
Top Feedback Summary for May 5:
Hello, Insiders! This week’s update is very small, we’re only moving one item into Not Planned. Let’s hop into those details!

We’re marking Profile picture is not syncing or displaying as Not Planned. We had added this item based on feedback from users who were concerned that the profile picture took too long to update or appeared to not update at all. We have decreased the amount of time the checks the browser does for new pictures, making these pictures update quicker than they have in the past. After different conversations on the team, we have decided to not make any further adjustments here. As we are no longer hearing this is a problem for users, we believe these small changes have improved the experience and are closing the item out.

However, as with any item we mark as Not Planned or Addressed on this list, we want to know if you continue to spot issues with these types of items. If your profile picture seems to take longer than a day to update, please submit feedback directly through the browser so that the team can investigate. You can do this by heading to the menu > Help and feedback > Send feedback and detail your thoughts or suggestions for the team.

Thanks for catching up this week. We’ll be back at you next week!

Microsoft Edge gets authentication option for Password Autofill

Windows Hello integration coming soon.
To improve the security and privacy of users, Microsoft recently started testing support for Windows Hello in Edge Canary. The feature is now available for everyone on the Dev Channel and users can enable it to improve the security of the autofill feature.

To test this feature, open Microsoft Edge Dev or Canary and navigate to Settings > Profile > Passwords. Enable the option “required authentication” to force Windows Hello authentication each time you try to sign in using the saved passwords.

As you can see in the above screenshot, Microsoft Edge currently offers three options:
  • Always – This will require authentication each time you try to sign in.
  • Once every minute.
  • Once every session.
It’s important to remember that Windows Hello doesn’t always require special hardware for Micorosft Edge. You can use methods such as PIN, fingerprint or iris scan to authenticate Edge’s password manager.

Dev channel update to 92.0.884.2 is live:
Hello Insiders! Today we’re releasing build 92.0.884.2 to the Dev channel. Our biggest news isn’t with the Dev channel though; it’s that with the most recent Beta release, which brings it to version 91, we’ve also released Beta for Linux! Depending on what flavor of Linux you’re running, you can download it from Download Microsoft Edge Insider Channels or Download Microsoft Edge Insider Channels.

Speaking of Linux, today’s Dev build for Linux experienced some issues getting built, so it may be delayed until later this week or skipped until next week. In better news, we’ve also got an overview of an improvement to the sidebar that we’re currently rolling out. Now, you can perform a reverse image search just by right-clicking on an image in a webpage! Read more here: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/articles/identify-plants-landmarks-products-and-more-using-se.... As for what’s new in the product:

Added features:
  • Added the ability for Guided Switch to remember which profile to use per website.
  • Added options in Print Preview to Fit To Page and to print as Actual Size.
As always, we couldn’t do this without you!
Top Feedback Summary for May 12:
Hey there, Insiders! There’re no major changes in this week’s update, but we did want to call out a couple of things about this list.

We have a few items under discussion: tab preview from Microsoft Edge legacy, tab set aside, matching Windows languages, closing tabs with middle click, and make the address bar smaller like Chrome’s. That last one is available to some in our Insider channels and the team would love to hear your thoughts on this! Hop into these threads to let the team know your opinion on these feedback items and how you would like to see us implement – or not implement! – these features.

We’re updating the title of one of these items this week to properly reflect the state of the browsers at this time. Bring the tab preview feature from the current version of Microsoft Edge is being changed to Bring the tab preview feature from Microsoft Edge legacy, since the current version of the browser is the chromium-based version.

There’s a new item being added today, and y’all have been asking for this since we made the change to how you see your downloads. It’s currently Under Review, but keep an eye on the status for Enable additional options for viewing downloaded files, such as the bottom of the window as we get them. If you would like to see improvements in this area, let the team know by submitting feedback through the browser.

As always, we could not do this without your input, as evidence from this list of feedback you all have sent to us. Let us know your thoughts not only here on the forums but also directly through the browser via the menu > Help and feedback > Send feedback. This will ensure your voice is heard by the team, but also leaving comments on our discussion threads gives you the chance to flesh out your thoughts more and have others see your perspective.

We’ll chat at you all next week!

Microsoft Edge could soon let you hide its title bar while using vertical tabs:
Microsoft seems to be warming up to the idea of letting you hide Edge's title bar.
What you need to know
  • Microsoft Edge Canary now has options to hide its title bar in settings and a context menu.
  • Previously, the option was only available through edge://flags.
  • Hiding the title bar of Edge provides more space when using the vertical tabs.

Microsoft Edge Canary has received a new experimental Chromium-based Sharing Hub feature that makes it easier to share content with other people.

Earlier this month, Google added a new experimental feature to Google Chrome Canary that adds a paper plan icon to your address bar, that when clicked, opens a new Sharing Hub feature.

This week, Reddit user Leopeva64 (via Windows Central) discovered that Microsoft Edge Canary also received this feature but without any customization of Google's implementation.

Dev channel update to 92.0.902.2 is live:
Hello Insiders! Today we’re releasing build 92.0.902.2 to the Dev channel. It’s been a while since our last release, so there’s lots to talk about in this build! This is also the last build for version 92, give or take some patches, so expect to see this coming to Beta soon! Speaking of builds, last week was Microsoft Build 2021! Since Build is now a completely digital event, everybody can join! Visit Microsoft Build to get started. We’ve also got an overview of everything we talked about here: What’s new for Microsoft Edge at Microsoft Build 2021.

To coincide with Build, we’ve got lots of other exciting news to talk about this week. The biggest is that we’ve officially announced the retirement of Internet Explorer! If you haven’t read the announcement, check it out here: https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2021/05/19/the-future-of-internet-explorer-on-windows-10.... We’ve also got an in-depth FAQ here: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/windows-it-pro-blog/internet-explorer-11-desktop-app-retireme....

We’ve also got:

As for everything new in the browser:

Added features:
  • Added a feature flag to enter Immersive Reader automatically when navigating to an eligible page.
  • Improved the … menu in PWAs and websites installed as apps to only show relevant options.
  • Finished rolling out the new Extensions menu, Smart History Search, and Price History.
  • Enabled by default the ability to pin the Favorites, History, etc. menus and have that state remembered, as well as the Collections popup menu.
  • Added management policies to control if the setting for AAD Website SSO Using This Profile is Enabled, the Automatic HTTPS Default setting, if Internet Explorer Integration to Reload In IE Mode is Allowed, the Internet Explorer Integration Local Site List Expiration in Days, and if Local Browser Data Share is Enabled, which controls how Edge shares local user data with the Windows Search Indexer. Note that updates to documentation and administrative templates may not have happened yet.
For Stable users, version 91 was released last week, so be on the lookout for that!
Top Feedback Summary for June 1:
Hey, Insiders! In this week’s update, we’re only updating one item. As is normal with the end/beginning of the month, it’s possible you all will see more updates come next week.

Out of our normal definitions, we are updating Allow users to turn off the “Disable developer mode extensions” notification to Planned for June. This feature is not designed for our Canary and Dev channels and we normally mark items as Addressed once they are rolled out to those channels. With that, we expect this to show up in Beta once Edge 92 rolls into it this month. We will close this item out following that update.

That’s it for this week! Have something you’d like to see on this list? Don’t forget to submit feedback to us directly via the menu > Help and feedback > Send feedback. Detail your thoughts and suggestions so the team understands what you are looking for, and if others are like-minded ask them to send in their thoughts, too! This way the team also understands the need from users.

Happy June, all! We’ll be back at you with next week’s updates!

Improving font rendering in Microsoft Edge:
Today we are excited to announce improved font rendering in the latest Canary builds of Microsoft Edge on Windows. We have improved the contrast enhancement and gamma correction to match the quality and clarity of other native Windows applications. Font rendering will also now respect user ClearType Tuner settings when applying text contrast enhancement and gamma correction.

What’s New?
In the latest Canary builds, we now have support for applying the system settings for contrast enhancement and gamma correction of text. You can enable this with the edge://flags#edge-enhance-text-contrast flag.

To experiment with different values, run the ClearType Text Tuner (search for “Adjust ClearType text” in the Start menu). Note that Edge must be restarted whenever the settings are changed, and that only the settings for your primary monitor are used.

You can see the effect of the various choices you made in the tuner by viewing a demo page hosted on GitHub.

Behind the scenes, the registry key KEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Avalon.Graphics\DISPLAY1 is modified to a value between 50 and 400.
Looking Ahead
Today, the changes described above must be manually enabled, but after a rollout period we plan to have this behavior enabled by default in the Edge 92 stable channel. Also, while these changes are specific to Edge, we hope to be able to contribute them back to Chromium so that all Chromium-based browsers on Windows enjoy a consistent font rendering experience.

We would love to hear your feedback on whether these changes improve your reading experience and if it addresses your feedback around font clarity and contrast. If you have comments or suggestions, please reach out on Twitter @MSEdgeDev or send feedback via the Microsoft Edge Feedback Tool. As always, we will continue to listen to your feedback and look for ways to improve text rendering going forward. We think that this change will address some of the feedback around font clarity and contrast, and we will continue to look for ways to improve text rendering going forward.
