Beta users, be on the lookout for version 92 to come to you soon!
Top Feedback Summary for June 9:
Greetings, Insiders! June is here, summer is just around the corner for us in the northern hemisphere (we hope our friends in the southern hemisphere are keeping warm!), and Edge 92 is rolling into our Beta channel this week! We have several things moving around and being added, as items do on this list, so let’s jump into it.

First up, a surprise! We are not only adding on Allow users to adjust the width of the Vertical Tabs pane, it’s also already Addressed! This is available now for most users in our Dev and Canary channels.

We have two items moving this week from May to June. Users can get back to where they left off in PDF documents and Users can find and manage their tabs more easily by organizing them into associated groups are available for some and should be available for more users later this month.

Lastly, another new item! Allow users to put individual tabs to sleep is something that users who utilize Sleeping Tabs have been asking for, and we’re excited to share that we have this Planned. As we get more information on this, and all the other items on this list, we’ll share updates here.

That’s all for this week! Join us next week to see what we update then.

For the full rules, see https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/articles/microsoft-edge-add-ons-install-to-win-sweepstakes-th....

We also would like to draw attention to an in-depth study of how we recently improved visual accessibility of a feature in the F12 Dev Tools: https://blogs.windows.com/msedgedev/2021/06/15/improving-contrast-in-microsoft-edge-devtools-a-bugfi.... There’s a lot to consider when dealing with accessibility, and we think this will be very informative for web devs who want to improve their products in similar way. Now, for everything else new this week:

Added features:
  • Enabled support for a management policy from Chromium to control if CECPQ2 is Enabled.

  • Version 94 of Edge is getting CET support.
  • CET stands for Control-Flow Enforcement Technology.
  • It helps prevent hackers from changing program behaviors.
"Microsoft Edge will begin supporting an even safer browsing mode that uses hardware-dependent control flow for browser processes on supported hardware (Intel 11th Gen. or AMD Zen 3). You can disable CET by manipulating Image File Execution Options (IFEO) using group policy."

As mentioned in the blurb, this update is about CET support for certain CPU hardware, so this need only apply to you if you already have or are planning on getting the latest and greatest processors from AMD and Intel. And no one needs to dwell on any of this for a while; the roadmap has the feature release slated for September 2021.

Dev channel update to 93.0.926.0 is live:
Hello Insiders! Today we’re releasing build 93.0.926.0 to the Dev channel, although we also will be adding a .1 or .2 patch later this week.

On the welcome page, you may have noticed in a tile that we’re beginning to roll out Efficiency Mode. We’ll have more details about that soon. For today, we’re announcing the arrival of a much-requested feature from both users and web devs: dark themed form controls! Check out the blog post with all the details here: Dark Mode for HTML Form Controls. As for everything else that’s new and noteworthy this week:

Added features:
  • Enabled by default the ability to import passwords from a CSV file.
  • Enabled by default the ability to change the font in Immersive Reader.
  • Enabled Kids Mode by default.
  • Added more themes in Kids Mode.
  • Added a keyboard shortcut for toggling between vertical and horizontal tabs layouts.
  • Added a message on the update Settings page to warn when the browser can’t be restarted to install an update because another user on the device has it open.
  • Added a confirmation the first time F12 is pressed that allows users to disable it as an entry point for the Dev Tools. Note that it can be re-enabled or disabled at any time in Settings.
  • Enabled support for management policies from Chromium to control if Insecure Private Network Requests are Allowed, Chromium to control the list of what Insecure Private Network Requests are Allowed For which Urls, and to control if Triple DES is Enabled, which allows/disallows the use of 3DES cipher suites in TLS.
We couldn’t do this without you!
Top Feedback Summary for June 23:
Hey, Insiders! This week is pretty small with two items getting marked as Addressed. Let’s hop right into it!

First up, at the beginning of the month we had mentioned that we were waiting for the feature for Allow users to turn off the “Disable developer mode extensions” notification to reach our Beta channel before marking this as Addressed. This week, we’re excited to announce that Beta users should start to see this option. When you are using Developer Mode from the edge://extensions page, you will now be able to tell the notification that you are in Developer Mode directly from the dialog itself. Give it a shot! This should roll into our Stable channel in the near future.

Lastly, but certainly not least, we are marking The address bar and its text are too big, and should be smaller like Chrome as Addressed. Several of you have noticed this change over the past few weeks, and we’re excited to bring this to the browser for our Insiders. Note that the change here is that we made the text in the address bar smaller, and this brings parity to Chrome.

That’s all for this week! Since we are closing out these two items, it’s a great time to give a reminder that we are constantly reviewing feedback to make adjustments based on what you all say. Not as excited as we are about some changes? Or are you in love with how everything works now? Either way, let us know directly through the browser by heading to the menu > Help and feedback > Send feedback. The team looks forward to seeing your thoughts!

Microsoft enables Tab Groups by default in Edge 93

Microsoft has finally enabled the Tab Groups feature by default in Microsoft Edge 93 canary and developer versions without you need to use the flag. In addition to that Collapsing option is also available. Tab Groups could be a mighty addition to Edge and will be a great tab organizing tool apart from Vertical Tabs and Collections.
Collapsing tab groups is another useful feature that shrinks all tabs into a small tab and available when you need them with a single click.

The Tab groups feature in Microsoft Edge has been available behind a flag for a long time and now made into Dev and Canary versions.

If you’re new to the feature, here is how you can create your first tab group in Edge.
  • Right-click on a tab or multiple tabs and select add tab (s) to the group. Name the group, customize the color of the header.
  • To ungroup tabs, right-click on a tab and select “Remove from group or right-click on the group name and select “Ungroup
You can even group tabs in the Vertical tab layout also.

Windows 11 visual refresh in testing for Microsoft Edge:
You can make Microsoft Edge Canary line up better with Windows 11 with an experimental flag.

What you need to know
  • Microsoft Edge Canary has an option to enable Windows 11 visual updates.
  • Once enabled, the browser will have more rounded corners, new menus, and an updated font within menus.
  • The option is available through an experimental flag.
A new experimental flag for Microsoft Edge Canary allows you to enable Windows 11 visual updates. The flag modernizes the look of the browser, though at the moment there are only a handful of small changes. The flag was spotted by Reddit user Leopeva64-2. It appears to be an option for anyone running build 93.0.945.0 or later.
The description of the flags states, "Enables in-progress visuals appropriate for your currently installed version of Windows." Since the visual updates are in progress, we'll likely see more improvements in the future.
Right now, the visual changes appear to be subtle. For example, the context menus within Edge align better with other menus on Windows 11. Edge Canary also has some new icons, a new font for all menus, and more rounded corners throughout the browser. There don't appear to be any sweeping changes at the moment.

To enable the new look:
  1. Navigate to edge://flags in Microsoft Edge Canary.
  2. Search for "Enable Windows 11 Visual Updates" (right now, you can also search for "Windows 11" to find the flag).
  3. Toggle the feature to Enabled.
  4. Click Restart to restart the browser.
You can revert to the older look by following the same steps but toggling the option to "disabled."

Microsoft Edge will get these new features in the next few months:
Microsoft recently updated the Microsoft Edge feature roadmap with several new features that are coming in the next few months. Some of the new features that are coming to Edge include Tab Groups, price history in shopping experience, improved Picture-in-Picture feature, free form highlighting in PDFs and more. You can find the full list of new features below.

Free form text boxes added to PDF documents: Starting with version 94, we are support for adding free form text boxes to PDF documents that you can use to fill in forms and add visible notes.

Launch PWA instead of browser with URL links: Starting in Microsoft Edge version 97, you can opt into launching the browser in a PWA rather than the full native browser.

Tab Groups: The ability to categorize tabs into user-defined groups helps you more effectively find, switch and manage tabs across multiple workstreams. To enable this, we are turning on tab grouping beginning with Microsoft Edge version 93.

Price history in shopping experience: Price History helps you decide whether now is the best time to purchase a product. You can now see price changes on products of your interest on Amazon.com and 9 other retailers, allowing you to have a quick, stress free shopping experience.

Citation support added to Collections: Starting with Microsoft Edge version 95, we have improved the Collections experience, especially for students and researchers. Collections will start supporting citations and reading lists.

New policy to support more flexibility in Microsoft Edge startup: Beginning with Microsoft Edge version 94, enterprise administrators will have more flexibility in the options they choose in their startup policy. This will include the ability to specify the start page, add/remove additional pages, and Continue where you left off”, while ensuring that the set of pages specified by policy are also opened.

Video Picture in Picture (PiP) from hover toolbar: Beginning in Edge version 93, it will become even easier to enter Picture in Picture (PiP) mode. When you hover over a supported video, a toolbar will appear that allows you to view that video in a PiP window.

Free form highlighting on PDFs: Starting in Microsoft Edge version 94, the PDF viewing and markup experience will be improved with the addition of freeform highlighters. This will allow you to highlight sections on PDFs that you may not have access to comment on as well as scanned documents.

Notification from web apps show as coming from the PWA: Beginning with Microsoft Edge version 94, notifications from progressive web applications PWAs will no longer show as coming from Microsoft Edge, but rather will display the name of the web app instead.

Hide the title bar while using Vertical Tabs: Get the extra few pixels back by hiding the browser’s title bar, while in Vertical Tabs. Starting with Microsoft Edge version 93, you can go to edge://settings/appearance and under the Customize Toolbar section select the option to hide the title bar while in Vertical Tab mode.

Automatic translation for unknown languages: Starting in Microsoft Edge version 94, when you navigate to a page that displays in a language that is not one that you have set up as known, Microsoft Edge will automatically translate the content of the page to your primary language. We will then give you the option to return to the original page or disable further automatic translations.

Initial Preferences in Microsoft Edge: Deploying Microsoft Edge to your enterprise will become easier starting in version 93, with the addition of Initial Preferences.

Improved handoff between IE mode and the modern browser: Starting with Microsoft Edge version 95, the transition between the modern browser experience and the IE mode experience will improve. Referrer headers, post data, forms data and request methods will now be forwarded properly across the two experiences.

Family Safety: Improved protection on sites such as youtube.com: Families using Microsoft Family Safety will soon see improvements to Content filters. Parents will also have more peace of mind knowing filtering settings for Allowed sites and Blocked sites will be improved for sites such as youtube.com to prevent children from navigating to videos that aren’t allowed.

Family Safety: Allow many EDU sites with a single click: Families using Microsoft Family Safety will soon see improvements to Content filters. When using “Only use allowed websites” mode, parents will see an option to add a list of educational sites to the allow list with one click.

Microsoft is updating Edge on Thursday to allow the browser’s password manager to log you in to your mobile apps. The new release, technically Edge 92, also includes new password safety features through a password health dashboard.

The Edge mobile app should be able to use the browser’s password manager in a way that sounds similar to other services like BitWarden or 1Password. Using your login credentials you’ve accumulated in Edge, you can easily log in to apps like Pinterest or Instagram, presumably with the autofill-type experience you’re used to.

Microsoft already offered a universal password management feature in Microsoft Authenticator, which allowed you to set it as a default autofill option in iOS or Android. It’s not clear if Edge will work in the same way, but we’ve reached out to Microsoft to confirm.

The rest and some clips as gif

Hello there, Insiders! We are back from a brief break, but we do not have any major updates this week. Speaking as myself is not common with these posts but I wanted to provide a little more context for the next updates. I will be out for surgery recovery next week, which means the next update for this may not be until middle of August. The entire team appreciates your understanding with this!

Since we have no major updates this week, we wanted to highlight the items on this list that are still In Discussion. Have you been able to review your favorite items that have a discussion thread? Here’s a list pulled up from the table below for ease of access. We’d love to know your thoughts on these, so please hop into those threads to lend us your voice!

Bring the tab preview feature from Microsoft Edge legacy

Allow users to put individual tabs to sleep

Bring the tab set aside feature from the current version of Microsoft Edge

Enable option to match Windows display language

Add ability to close tabs via double-click

We will be back in a few weeks with our next updates on this list. Until then, remember to let us know your thoughts and suggestions directly through the browser by heading to the menu > Help and feedback > Send feedback!

The lead of Microsoft Edge Vulnerability Research Johnathan Norman has detailed an experiment in Edge that disabled the JavaScript just-in-time (JIT) compiler to enable some extra security protections.

Describing JIT compiling as a "remarkably complex process that very few people understand and it has a small margin for error", Norman pointed out that half of all vulnerabilities for the V8 JavaScript engine was related to the process.

With the JIT engine turned off, it was possible for Edge to turn on protections -- such as the hardware-based Control-flow Enforcement Technology (CET) from Intel, and Windows' Arbitrary Code Guard (ACG) and Control Flow Guard (CFG) -- that were previously incompatible with JIT.
Super Duper Secure Mode is currently available via edge://flags for users of canary, dev, and beta release channels of the browser, and currently switches CET on, but is not currently compatible with WebAssembly.

"It will take some time, but we hope to have CET, ACG, and CFG protection in the renderer process. Once that is complete, we hope to find a way to enable these mitigations intelligently based on risk and empower users to balance the tradeoffs," Norman said.

"This is of course just an experiment; things are subject to change, and we have quite a few technical challenges to overcome. Also, our tongue-in-cheek name will likely need to change to something more professional when we launch as a feature."
