RE: Biozfear's main config (updated 30/6/12)

Update:
Found the source of BSoD's as well as the reason why SRPs were being wiped.

SRPs was due to Puran Defrag default settings. After reconfiguring, still saw some restore points being deleted, so decided to not have any defrag installed and if need be, would install Perfect Disk 11 to defrag and then uninstall it.

BSoD's were caused by 2 programs: version 8.03 of VMware Workstation, which in turn caused problems with VMware Player.
The other reason was the latest Dell Datasafe backup which was conflicting with something, causing memory and cpu spikes and eventually BSoD.

Replaced WMware with Virtual Box, reverted to original version of Dell Datasafe from factory OS settings.

Clean image was once again restored and applications installed manually.

Installed once again ESET NOD32 V5 as a temporary measure while I test out AVAST Free's custom settings.

Currently in mind: CAV, AVAST Free, KAV, Kingsoft AV, Trustport and Panda AV Pro.

Although I have been happy with ESET, running up to 3 clients of one of my game does consume some ram and adding ESET to the equation, is not really a good idea. I know that KAV has been with some memory issues however need to test out Patch i.

Real-time protection: ESET NOD32 5, custom settings, HIPS disabled
On-demand scanners: n/a
Browser(s): *Google Chrome
*IE 9

Extensions: Adblock Plus.
Other Utilities used/installed:
*CCleaner;
*Quicksys RegDefrag;
*Revo Uninstaller Pro;
*Unlocker 1.9.1 (64 bit version);
*Paragon Backup & Recovery 2011 Free.

Why were you using both VMWare Player and VMWare Workstation? :huh:

Keep in mind if you're going to be using VirtualBox for testing security applications, some applications may not work as expected. I do know that CIS isn't able to fully function in VirtualBox because vectored exceptions fail, (VMWare functions properly) so other applications may have similar troubles.

After the first BSoD on the newly OS image, when I tried to run workstation again it wouldn't run, so I had no choice to go to player but half way through launching and loading up the image, it would crash.

do you know if Avast would work without a problem in VirtualBox? I do know that IS wasnt at its full potential.

The CIS issue I thought it was fixed as it was first reported back in 2010 or so.

If that is the case, I still have an option, which is reverting to workstation 8.01 which was stable for me.

Could I still have VB installed? as I got a feeling Lubuntu does launches and runs faster in VB than when it was in VM. Perhaps was just my impression.

I have tried avast in Virtual Box with the machine being XP no but that was for avast version 6. As far as I know it works fine.

I don't have any idea.

This is one of those, who's problem is it? Conundrums.

The problem is the way VirtualBox functions. It doesn't do some things the way the OS does, which causes problems in the way CIS functions.

So, is it up to Oracle to make sure CIS functions properly on their product, or is it up to Comodo to make sure their product functions properly on VirtualBox?

To be honest, I would rather push on Oracle to make sure it allows certain products to work, like I suppose VMware does it. I understand is a freeware tool. But then again, VB might have some points that out stands VM.

Nevertheless, Ill keep VB for Linux and further explore VB abilities in due course.

Thanks HeffeD.

That's the way I see it. An OS emulator should endeavor to emulate the OS as closely as possible to ensure the widest compatibility with any software the user may install.

I also use VB for my Linux installs, but keep VMWare Player for my Windows machines.

RE: Biozfear's main config (updated 30/6/12)

Had 8.01 version of VMware installed no problems detected.
Clean OS guest installed for purposes of next test/review, left it on idle for about 5 hours without a problem.

Compared to the VB, didnt notice much difference on speed etc, but one feature I miss in VM is the drag to resize the window which will automatically set the resolution in VB. Likewise drag and drop files to VM is a nice feature that is lacking in VB.

anyways back to avast testing.

VMware with all feature = paid
Virtualbox with all features = free

my choice is done :D

RE: Biozfear's main config (updated 04/07/12)

Updated config:

Real-time protection: 3 system images for testing purposes:
Image 1: ESET NOD32 5, custom settings, HIPS disabled
Image 2: CAV with D+, custom settings, cloud disabled
Image 3: No AV, open slot for another alternative

Current images is to for the purpose of comparison between the solutions when running along AION and C9 (continent of the ninth seal).
Monitoring system impact, RAM usage, I/O, Boot time, etc. Estimated time for testing: 1 week.

Bearing in mind I can use one image at a time and image restore takes 2h14m using Paragon.

Removed: Image 1: ESET NOD32 5, custom settings, HIPS disabled

Testing CAV with D+ again but this time in Stock settings before starting to change the settings.

Without AV, pc feels naked but not much of a boot delay or anything with or without CAV.

With avast however I did experienced a slow boot and shutdown, despite enabling the option to load avast after services been loaded and disabling a specific scan at boot (memory I think it was).

Project timeline: Increased until further notice due to upcoming reviews + Real Life tasks.

RE: Biozfear's main config (updated 14/07/12)

Testing has now been complete and have chosen Comodo Antivirus with D+ as the security solution, for my gaming purposes.

Upcoming reviews of other security solutions will still be done. Just because I am sticking to one specific solution, does not mean I am not curious to see how would other solutions do in the tests.

Nope. Got router firewall with game ports allowed and its enough.

CIS (full suite did cause disconnections etc with the games despite being allowed in firewall etc).

Most online games have that issue with firewalls. And when its not the actual game, its the anti-hacking system used.

RE: Biozfear's main config (updated 14/07/12)

it was one product I haven't tested in my host for my day to day surfs.
I got to say that it seems rather pointless using it for my surfing since the sites I surf are rather safe and always the same.

probably remove it tonight.

If only google chrome had the option of using dns servers on browser only (checked about:flags and option is no longer there - not sure since when it was removed). Suppose ill use Norton DNS on the actual laptop.

Only problem I have is my memory. I change things and sometimes I forget that I changed something. Probably will start using traditional way: pen and paper

Most routers have a firewall now a days, which is good if like Biozfear said that he has none, he can get the router to block them for him.
