Caused even you post news it will no longer counted as a post, I think this will be the final solution for this.
I'd like to hear what the administrators have to say about this.
I think that it would be a good idea.

RE: Too Much

OK, that can be done. News aren't all bad. Some are interesting and some are not. News sites have to produce news even if nothing interesting is happening. So they figure out a smart title and write a news article about nothing or they re-write the same article over and over again, with slightly different content. We don't have to do that. I think pretty much everyone here is subscribed using rss to the the same blogs and news sites. Just post the news you want to talk about. I think we, the admins, did the same mistake and posted too much news in the attempt to increase the post & thread number of the forum.

And possibly, post count.
It should be more like most news sites where they post an article and people comment on it without it amounting to anything.
This would prevent things being just for the post count.

RE: Too Much

Changes:
  • Settings for the News Forum are now changed so post count doesn't increase when someone posts in there.
  • From now on, admins & moderators will also move news in the News Forum if the thread is posted in other forums.
  • If someone is interesting in news he/she needs to browse the News Forum, threads in this forum don't appear when you click on the New Posts & Today's Posts.

Is this OK?

RE: Too Much

The solution is this ...............................Please have Jamesc7 stop posting so much news links a day. Its that easy. Do you really need to hear that Adobe patched another hole? No when most of us have already downloaded the patch. Everything Jamescv7 posts I have already read from either Cnet,PC MAg,PC World or any other web site. The forum will eventually be flooded with nothing but news and nothing about us geeks talking. Take the news threads out and about half the threads will be gone. The forum should be filled with useful information for us geeks or other geeks. 5 news articles a day times 7 days a week. That means 35 threads a week filled with just news. There is no reason for it. Look at other forums and you will no see stuff like this. Thanks.

BTW...................I am no where disrespecting Jamescv7.

Yes.
Will this come into effect for posts that have already been made there?

RE: Too Much

But I am also talking about stuff like browser news and other various things. Those changes are fine but still doesn't stop 5 news articles a day from being posted from sites I have already been to. Wilders Security is the top security forum around and they have no such articles being posted. Bleeping Computers has an area where ALL news goes. It does not get posted in the main page. So for those who want to read the latest news they can go right there. Even time I click the Portal tab I see articles I have already read.

Here is an example. Click on the news tab. The see how many pages are listed from the time period of 4/5-4/22. There are 5 pages. Thats 5 pages of news in less then a month. Never mind in a year. If this keep up then 60-70% of what is in this site is just copied and pasted news articles. Get the picture.

RE: Too Much

Moving old news threads might be meaningless at this point. Dieselman what about these threads you just posted:
http://malwaretips.com/Thread-avast-Free-Antivirus-wins-12th-straight-VB100-award
http://malwaretips.com/Thread-AVAST-Software-Twenty-years-in-pursuit-of-malware

If you complain about news regarding browsers than someone that is not an avast user couldn't care less that avast is now 20 years old.

RE: Too Much

Thats specific news directly related a product post in that products section. Those are from Avast's blog which are NOT a regularly visited web site and not known publicly. Plus compare what I post to what Jamescv7 posts. He is about 3 times as much thank you very much. How many visit Avast's blogs as co compared to Cnet,PC Mag,PC World or any other top sites. I am NOT flooded the forum with 5 news articles a day now am I? No.

BTW bogdan.............Those articles I posted are articles. Not just news. And they were 7 days apart.

RE: Too Much

The second one is straight from the avast NewsLetter.
So you are not complaining about the fact that Threads containing link to News are placed all over the place?

News, articles... news articles!
Still, I can see your point, Dieselman, and I do agree with it, there is a difference between an occasional post about news that would likely not be discovered otherwise and frequent articles taken from popular websites that everybody would probably know by now.

RE: Too Much

Yes, but the problem is we have to make rules everyone can understand and respect. Something like: If the news is from a source probably not visited by most members you can post it doesn't work.
I would honestly want to hear Dieslman's idea about what he thinks is needed.

RE: Too Much

All of us in here are security computer geeks. Thats a fact. All of us already know where to find the latest and greatest news and info. For those who may not then simply go to one of these sites and bookmark it:

http://blogs.pcmag.com/securitywatch/
http://www.pcmag.com/
http://www.hardocp.com/
http://news.cnet.com/?tag=hdr;brandnav
http://www.computerworld.com/
http://www.laptopmag.com/default.aspx
http://www.maximumpc.com/
http://www.pcworld.com/#new
http://revision3.com/tekzilla
http://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/
http://www.neowin.net/
http://www.softpedia.com/

There are all sites I visited about twice a day. Sometimes even more. Now if everyone of started posting links from these various sites what kind of place would this be?

So you're saying that you both will and won't post news any more?
Please don't take any of this personally, James, nothing good will come of that.

@bogdan Will news posted before the post count change still count towards post count?

RE: Too Much

1. If the news is strictly related to a product, can it be posted inside the forum for that product?
2. If the poster is not sure that everyone else is interested, is it OK for him/her post the thread inside the News Forum?
3. Is it OK for mods to move new news threads inside the News Forum if they feel that the thread won't generate interesting discussions?
4. Is it OK for mods to delete new news threads if they feel that the thread won't generate interesting discussions?

Regarding news from common sources (the ones mentioned by Dieselman):
5. They will be moved inside the News Forum, or
6. They will be deleted.
