I used uninstalr 1.1 again yesterday, mostly uninstalling a few leftovers. Worked well for me. I think once you select a normal app or leftover to unisntall, it is important to review the list of locations it is going to unisntall. This was mentioned previously IIRC.

@jv16 I do see one oddity, it shows Amazon Kindle (ebook reader) as a leftover rather than a normal app. not sure why, although might be because this is on a VM_guest OS that was cloned from another VM, etc etc...

Bad Uninstalr, Bad. :cautious:

@jv16 Yesterday early in the evening I installed the Vivaldi Browser, because I wanted to see if it could replace Google Chrome as my backup browser. (And it can in my opinion.) After having it installed complete with a few extensions, and trying Vivaldi out for a while, I decided to uninstall Google Chrome. So I started Uninstalr and searched for "Google Chrome", and then checked the box next to it. It was the only thing showing, so no other software, and I then clicked the uninstall button.

While it was busy removing Chrome I also suddenly saw that Uninstalr was also removing my Razer Central and NVidia software!? (And who knows, maybe more!) I had to use my backup image to be certain that everything was in perfect order again. A uninstall program should only remove the program that it is asked to remove, not other software that has nothing to do with Google Chrome!! (I tried it a second time and the result was the same.)

Sorry to hear about the problem! I'm currently improving accuracy and adding more safe guards to show additional warning message to user in case something like this is detected but ultimately, this is why the UI is asking user to confirm the data to be deleted before the uninstallation starts. Did you review the data before uninstallation? Were these issues visible in the list?

I was asked if I wanted to remove Google Chrome yes, but that was it as far as I know. I noticed it when I saw Razer and NVidia mentioned in the box where you can see what is currently being removed? If there was a list made from the uninstall, then that was lost when I removed Uninstalr. :(

This monitoring is not ANY monitoring. This is just analisis to show the log for one only program without need to re-launch the Uninstalr. There is no before and after scan. The result of the end appears immediately, so it is not monitoring. There is no duration time for scan.
Just test this:
1. Launch Uninstalr.
2. Click "New Software Monitoring".
3. Wait 3 minutes.
4. Install 7-Zip.
5. Merge some reg file.
6. Click Finish installation for 7-Zip.
7. Re-Launch Uninstalr to be sure of garbage data.
CONCLUSION: You will see that the reg file entry is missing! So, this is not monitoring as described. This is just analisis.

Here is another test: Look at the monitoring, how it catches other programs as well. A monitoring should catch the changes, not carry out an analysis and a harmful one at that! Here is a monitoring result for 7-Zip:

Software's files and folders:

C:\Program files (x86)\7-zip sfx maker\
C:\Program files (x86)\7-zip sfx maker\7-zip sfx maker.exe
C:\Program files\7-zip\
C:\Program files\7-zip\Uninstall.exe
C:\Users\All users\Microsoft\Windows\Start menu\Programs\7-zip\
C:\Users\UserName\Desktop\7-zip sfx maker.lnk
C:\Windows\Prefetch\7-zip_sfx_maker_v3.3.exe-5569282d.pf

Before install the Uninstalr i had program called "7-Zip SFX Maker". It doesn't have uninstaller since the distribution is through SFX. Then installed Uninstalr and monitor the 7-Zip. The monitoring option needs to remove 2 different programs? I never installed any software except 7-Zip. This is not monitoring! Why you lying people?

Uninstalr lists all paths it suggests to remove, before the uninstallation starts. This view also has a text urging the user to review the data before processing. The screen looks like this: https://uninstalr.com/assets/screenshots/dark_mode/uninstalr_uninstall.png

Did this listing contain any references to Razer or NVidia before the uninstallation started?

I will not say for 100%, but I am quite certain that those programs were not mentioned. But... even on the chance that I did not see them get mentioned, I do believe that it still is something that should not have happened. So even if there is a chance that I missed the warning from Uninstalr, it should only remove the selected program and not also programs that have nothing to do with Chrome.

No matter which situation turns out to be the truth, it is weird that it happened, and I really hope you can find out why it did happen.

I agree, that should have not happened. The reason why I asked whether the Razer or NVidia references were on the path listing would tell me a bit what kind of bug this is, and that would help me to fix it faster.

In any case, thank you for reporting and I will fix this issue for the next version!

I haven't tested the monitoring. But if an uninstaller is doing a before and after scan, it is using snapshots, which is different to monitoring. Almost all uninstallers use snapshots. When an uninstaller monitors installations, it actually monitors the installer and sees what files and registry keys are being created. Install Monitor, IObit Uninstaller and Comodo Programs Manager are the only other uninstallers I'm aware of that use monitoring.

The problem with using snapshots, is that all changes to the system get recorded, even ones not made by the installer. So for example, if Edge gets updated in the background when installing another app, then the changes made when updating Edge will get included in the record of files and registry keys that were created when installing the other app. This provides a good reason to actually verify what an uninstaller wants to delete, before letting it remove anything. There are also issues with uninstallers that you monitoring. They may fail to monitor the installation of some apps and depending on how well the monitoring works, they may miss some changes that an installer makes.

He probably meant that the mentioned programs have real-time monitoring, while most apps use snapshots. For real-time monitoring, the app has to run in the background.

@roger_m How well does Install Monitor work?
I was doing beta testing for the developer a few years ago and its monitoring wasn't always monitoring all changes made. That was four years ago and while there have been a number of program updates released since then, I haven't tried it again. Perhaps in the coming months, I will do a test of uninstallers with monitoring again.

thanks :D I'd be curious to see @jv16 test this and compare it to completeness of his uninstalr even though as you say they work differently. I just downloaded v5.. but haven't installed it yet. Apparently runs in real-time / full time in background, and says it has other monitoring features. Any security issue with that? Harmony downloaded it as clean and clean at VT.

Result being same as previous, a successful uninstall of O&O that also removes the Win defrag tool in the process.
fwiw, I've had uninstall issues with O&O software in more remote past. this could be more O&O issue than uninstalr issue...

Perhaps, but as O&O can be removed without issue when using other uninstall tools, my money would be on Unistalr being the culprit.
Other problematic softwares are available Macecraft Software but can only speak for the ones I have tested.
