The Recording Industry Association of America, Inc. (RIAA) has taken down YouTube-dl's GitHub repositories using a DMCA takedown notice.

YouTube-dl is an extremely popular command-line program used to download multimedia content from YouTube.com and other sites. The project used GitHub repositories to host the program's source code and compiled executables that could be downloaded by users.

Today, the RIAA took down the YouTube-dl GitHub repositories by filing a DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) infringement notice with GitHub.

As others have noted, YouTube-dl is used for far more than just downloading YouTube videos, but also to download free documentaries, public domain videos, and other works.

The successful use of a DMCA infringement notice to shutdown software that is in itself not a copyright violation is a scary precedent and one that lays the groundwork for misuse in the future.

All I see is a poor excuse, especially if we look at the name of the software.

It's likely easier to takedown smaller projects than the likes of BitTorrent (owned by TRON), who will put up a fight.
I was talking about the BitTorrent protocol, OSS projects like Transmission, qBittorrent or Pico Torrent are all BitTorrent clients

Yeah, because there's no need for excuses.
Software like youtube-dl should be allowed to exist. Plain and simple.
Is clear you haven't uploaded content to services like Youtube, would love to know how you felt if someone stole your work and used it as his own (this is one of the reasons Open Source will never be a thing, to many leeches taking credit for others work).

Most my Software is private for a good reason, and I know I'm not alone.
There are so many ways to download YouTube videos. Many websites, pc and mobile apps are making money out of this. Surely they can't go around and take everything down. All they can do is takedown the poor, non-profiting, open source victim.
Honestly you can easily download YouTube videos without third-parties, you wouldn't be able to watch the videos otherwise.

That settles it for me. Downloading videos is okay, but the moment one wants to download music with the software, well crusade them out from this world....
Jokes aside, it's such a low move that a very-well made FREE tool has to go, just because some artist(s) have decided that downloading their music is bad. With the same way of thinking DDL, Torrent and basicly every type of file sharing should cease and desist because they be used for illegal purposes (technically speaking piracy isn't illegal in many countries....)

You're throwing so much assumptions there. When in fact you don't know me and my view about copyright.
I made that snarky comment solely because your argument is beyond ridiculous. I mean, judging something by its name? At least try to make an objective assessment instead of throwing random and ridiculous argument like that.

Yes, I'm making lots of assumptions /s
This was taken from the project page,
youtube-dl is a command-line program to download videos from YouTube.com and a few more sites.
There would be no logic whasoever to call it youtube-dl if the project wasn't focused on Youtube.
