I did a reinstall of Windows 7 Professional 64-bit a month and a few weeks ago.

What I did:
- Install Windows 7
- Install Security Updates and SP1
- Disable unnecessary services
- Take a System Image using Windows Backup (to my external portable HDD)
- Create a System Repair Disc (as instructed after a System Image)
- Create a System Restore point, unless you use a rollback software
- Install the programs/software etc, create shortcuts for the portable software in the start menu etc.
- Use PC as normal

Does this help?

Hey, thanks for the reply. I did a backup using the windows windows backup, I didn't select create the repair disc though, are they the ones you put in that boot from Cd so you can fix things?

Also, I have never used portable apps previously but am going to start, what do you mean create shortcuts for portable software?

Thanks,

Luke

portable softwares are not installed in your system so you dont have shortcuts or link to them in the start menu, to run them you must either go to the folder containing the executable or more simply, create the shortcuts yourself (since most people put the folder on another partition)

Hey, I do know what they are but didn't didn't know what he meant about creating shortcuts for them in start menu lol. Do people not just keep portable stuff on a external or portable and use when required.... How do you all set them up?

Thanks

Luke

Have to say I kinda do the same thing that Earth does.

Example:

I have all my Portable programs here.
Code:
D:\Downloads\PortableApps

Right-click the executable and Send To > Desktop (create shortcut)

Move them to.
Code:
C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

And now they should appear in the Start Menu, without having to navigate to the Portable programs folder.

Mainly use PortableApps for my USB and use it for TAFE, because most of the computers don't have Waterfox on them.

Ok so I finally got round to getting this sorted, to some extent. I finally got Windows installed and updated... can I just say the amount of updates I needed from Windows was insane lol. Very time consuming but after they installed finally got that image created :D Got another image made after a few tweaks here and there and office installed. I started installing my programs etc, after installing CIS I was wondering, what is the real time protection/scanner to go for? Or is that not required with CIS? I have a few on demand scanners in MBAM or HitmanPro

Thanks

Btw I turned to Macrium Reflect to make my backups as TrueImage was not working right. Great program, as well as being free :D

CIS have everything YOU need, for me it is the best for prevention considering its ratio price/lightness/efficiency.

So you wouldn't suggest any AV companion or anything no?

EMET is a good program. Try it. There was a guide for v3. I have yet to install v4. What is your config atm. I am confused.

I like it. It is nice and simple, yet you are buttoned up.

I am just chiming in here out of the blue, and someone may have already said this, but it won't hurt to create a "toolkit" with GMER, Kaspersky TDSS Killer, Bit Defender TDSS Killer and Process Hacker II (or a similar task manager/intelligence gatherer). When you need a second opinion, Dr. Web Cureit can be Googled and you can select the softpedia.com link for a daily and up-to-date, free on-demand AV/malware scanner. If you want to run a full scan with it, you have to start the scanner, and then stop it a few minutes in; at that point, you will see that the "full scan" option is available.

Also, clean up any unecessarty start-up items and uneeded running processes. Make sure you are 100% certain that what you are removing is not a crucial process. I have only Threatfie AV on my START-UP list via MSCONFIG. I am using ancient XP and my computer will start as fast as the best of them.

I have a few of them toolkit apps on my portable mate just aint sorted all my stuff out yet.

I have just uninstalled Comodo system utilities, didn't like that app, it kept telling me I had files that needed cleaning and when I attempted to clean it would still say it. Is there a alternative for that option? Is EMET good to have, can anyone help me set it up and configure it.

I also have Paragonpartition manager installed.

Installed software so far

Comodo Internet Security
Hitman Pro
Malwarebytes
Ccleaner
Paragon partition manager
Macrium reflect
7 zip
Office 2010
EMET

Note on EMET, I had a try with installing it and stuff. I had a little mess about with it and I went to configure apps, file, import and imported the ALL.xml within the deployment folder.

Was that a good idea and will it do the job?

Thanks.

I suggest the following:
Real Time protection: ESET AV or VIPRE Internet Security 2012 (both are paid but you can test run it first), Avast Free AV or Comodo Internet Security (free)
On Demand Scanners: Malwarebytes Antimalware free plus Hitman Pro and Emsisoft Emergency Kit
Browser: Chrome/Firefox/Comodo Dragon with following extensions: Adblock Plus and WOT (site advisor)
Backup utility: Paragon Backup and Recovery or even Windows 7 default backup utility
HDD Defrag: Puran Defrag, Auslogics or Defraggler
Virtualization/Rollback: Most would recommend Sanboxie (which I also do), but other alternatives are Bufferzone Pro, Toolwiz Timefreeze, Returnil.
Unlocker Utility: Unlocker 1.9.1
Uninstaller: Revo Uninstaller Free
Ccleaner
Registry Defrag: Quicksys RegDefrag
Hardening: EMET 3.0

Thats my suggestions. Now handing over to the other guys:)
Hitman Pro already has the Emsisoft engine so using Emsisoft Emergency Kit would be a waste of time. :)

Unless the OP pays for Hitman Pro, to remove the infections would require starting the trial, while EEK can remove the infections without any trial.

KeyScrambler Personal is only worth installing if you use Firefox or Internet Explorer, (Flock was discontinued, but may be coming back), otherwise not worth installing.

Thanks mate, will wait on some others to help out with the other questions. I will not go ahead with keyscrambler though as I do intend on using that comodo dragon :D

Thanks.
